RESUMO

The relatively low stability of solar cells based on hybrid halide perovskites is the main issue to be solved for the implementation in real life of these extraordinary materials. Degradation is accelerated by temperature, moisture, oxygen, and light and mediated by halide easy hopping. The approach here is to incorporate pristine graphene, which is hydrophobic and impermeable to gases and likely limits ionic diffusion while maintaining adequate electronic conductivity. Low concentrations of few-layer graphene platelets (up to 24 × 10-3 wt %) were incorporated to MAPbI3 films for a detailed structural, optical, and transport study whose results are then used to fabricate solar cells with graphene-doped active layers. The lowest graphene content delays the degradation of films with time and light irradiation and leads to enhanced photovoltaic performance and stability of the solar cells, with relative improvement over devices without graphene of 15% in the power conversion efficiency, PCE. A higher graphene content further stabilizes the perovskite films but is detrimental for in-operation devices. A trade-off between the possible sealing effect of the perovskite grains by graphene, that limits ionic diffusion, and the reduction of the crystalline domain size that reduces electronic transport, and, especially, the detected increase of film porosity, that facilitates the access to atmospheric gases, is proposed to be at the origin of the observed trends. This work demonstrated how the synergy between these materials can help to develop cost-effective routes to overcome the stability barrier of metal halide perovskites, introducing active layer design strategies that allow commercialization to take off.

RESUMO

The poor photostability under ambient conditions of hybrid halide perovskites has hindered their recently explored promising nonlinear optical properties. Here, we show how Bi3+ can partially substitute Pb2+ homogeneously in the commonly studied MAPbI3, improving both environmental stability and photostability under high laser irradiation. Bi content around 2 atom % produces thin films where the nonlinear refractive (n2) and absorptive coefficients (ß), which modify the refractive index (Δn) of the material with light fluence (I), increase up to factors of 4 and 3.5, respectively, compared to undoped MAPbI3. Higher doping inhibits the nonlinear parameters; however, the samples show higher fluence damage thresholds. Thus, these results provide a road map on how MAPbI3 can be engineered for practical cost-effective nonlinear applications by means of Bi doping, including optical limiting devices and multiple-harmonic generation into optoelectronics devices.

The lower third molar extraction is a common procedure in oral surgery. One of its complications, although uncommon, is the mandibular fracture. Postoperatively, it has an incidence lower than 0.005%. The factors that may contribute to the risk of the mandibular angle fracture after an extraction of the third molar include the level of impaction are the anatomy of the tooth, previous local infections, age, sex, cysts and bruxism among others. We present a clinical case of postoperative mandibular fracture at five weeks after the extraction of 47 and 48 included in horizontal position. The ultimate treatment goal of a mandibular fracture is to reach a bone consolidation with the premorbid dental occlusion. In our case, as it was not a fracture that surpassed the cortical and there was not a mandibular displacement, it was not need a surgical treatment so it was resolved with functional rest

RESUMO

Osteomyelitis is an infection and inflammation associated with the bone structures: bone marrow, cortical bone, periosteum, blood vessels and nerves. Although it does not have a frequent presentation, it can sometimes lead to complications such as pathological fractures or even septicemia. We present a clinical case study, to assess the relationship between osteomyelitis of the jaw and pathological fractures, after the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth. This case highlights a rare complication following the surgical removal of mandibular third molar; a slow evolution of the pathology following an extraction should lead to close monitoring of the patient both clinically and radiographically, albeit osteomyelitis is a rare complication, it should be included as one of the differential diagnosis of persistent post-extraction pain.

Short dental implants, with the passage of time and advances in implantology, have become astandard treatment in clinical practice. The need to reduce intraoperative time, morbidity and economic costs, linked to the increasing demand for implant rehabilitation in patients with a range of growing old (elder patients) makes it necessary to add the min our rehabilitative implantology options. For this reason, it is important to know its advantages and disadvantages, to set up thesurgical protocols and to select the patients correctly (AU)

RESUMO

The standard of mandibular reconstruction has increased since the introduction of computer-assisted design (CAD) and rapid prototype modelling (RPM) for surgical planning. Between 2008 and 2013, a prospective pilot study of 20 patients was planned to compare the outcomes of patients treated by mandibular reconstruction who had CAD and RPM-guided operations using a precontoured titanium plate, with the outcomes of patients treated conventionally. We recorded the time taken for reconstruction, total operating time, and whether this type of planning could improve the results of mandibular reconstruction. We found significant differences in the incidence of dental malocclusion (p=0.03) and exposure of the titanium plate (p=0.009). The mean operating time for reconstruction in the preoperative planning group was 135 (37)min compared with 176 (58)min in the conventional group (p=0.04). Preoperative planning using CAD and RPM can increase the accuracy of microvascular mandibular reconstruction and reduce the operating time for reconstruction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate patient satisfaction and improvement in quality of life (QoL) among women with idiopathic menorrhagia treated with the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective-observational study with one-year follow-up in which 225 women were enrolled who had a LNG-IUS inserted for control of idiopathic menorrhagia. Bleeding, tolerability, user satisfaction, and health-related QoL (by means of the SF-36 QoL questionnaire) were assessed. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant reduction in the amount of bleeding, an increase of haemoglobin and ferritin levels, and an improved QoL score. A high degree of satisfaction was reported by over 98% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: The LNG-IUS is an effective and well-tolerated treatment modality in idiopathic menorrhagia. The QoL of women treated with the LNG-IUS is markedly improved, causing high levels of patient satisfaction. This IUS can be regarded as a first-choice therapy in idiopathic menorrhagia.
