RESUMO

Thirty-five patients with fractures of the anterior pelvis, in whom there was clinical suspicion of trauma to the posterior part of the pelvis, were examined by conventional radiology, bone scintigraphy and computed tomography, and the results were compared. CT provided the most information and made it possible to evaluate the soft tissues and organs of the pelvis. Bone scintigraphy produced the same number of abnormal findings as CT (sensitivity 100%), but was unable to differentiate between lesions of the sacro-iliac joints, fractures of the sacrum, combined injuries or degenerative processes. A positive bone scintigram is a reliable finding, with a high predictive value. A negative result excludes a fracture or other lesions of the dorsal portion of the pelvis completely. Conventional radiographs provided a correct diagnosis in only 37.1% as compared with CT.

RESUMO

From 1978 to 1979 87 patients with singular and combined injuries of the ligaments of the kneejoint underwent surgery at the Department for Traumatic Surgery of Mannheim. 62 (71.3%) patients could be examined one to two years after operation. In uncomplicated cases of instability of the kneejoint a good to excellent result could be achieved in 62%. In combined instability only 40% good to excellent results were achieved, due to the higher severity of the injury. The classification was measured according to a modified scheme of Gotzen and co-workers [2a].

RESUMO

In 20 test persons spinal fluid was taken at intervals of 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after a single injection of 40 mg cefamandole/kg body weight in order to determine the levels of the active substance. Whereas in serum an average peak value of 248 mcg/ml was determined after ten minutes, there was no trace at all of cefamandole in the spinal fluid.

RESUMO

In 60 cases typical compression fractures of the calcaneus were achieved by means of static compression of the test preparation. Afterwards the load bearing capacity of the fractured calcaneus was studied. In case of pure vertical compression the calcaneus does not loose much stability. The load bearing capacity of the studied bones after fracture achieved on an average still 63% of the initial value. In adequate cases of compression fractures, not only the early mobilization but the early weight bearing has to be discussed.

RESUMO

270 patients were operated on for malignant thyroid tumour between 1955 and 1974. Before 1967, less radical methods of operation had been preferred, but since 1968, radical thyroidectomy - if necessary supplemented by selective or radical neck dissection - has become the procedure of choice if a curative operation was still feasible. This has brought about a significant fall in the incidence of recurrences and increased the survival rate in patients with well-differentiated carcinoma. The proportion of postoperative complications has been within reasonable bounds. The incidence of postoperative recurrent-nerve paralysis, at 9.4%, has not been raised by radical procedures, while the proportion of permanent tetany (11%) after radical thyroidectomy is much higher than after sub-total resection (2%). But the advantages of radical thyroidectomy outweigh the increased incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
