RESUMO

Intraocular pressure was measured in 49 persons of either sex while carrying out Valsalva's maneuver in erect and recumbent position. 16 of the tested persons had myopia up to -8.0 D. The average intraocular pressure in recumbent position was 2 mm Hg higher when compared to the erect position. During Valsalva's maneuver the intraocular pressure was elevated in erect as well as in recumbent position. Three characteristic patterns of variation of intraocular pressure were seen after cessation of Valsalva's maneuver. The intraocular pressure in myopic persons was slightly higher than in those with emmetropia.

RESUMO

The quality of binocular vision in unilateral aphakia was tested in presbyopic patients. 10 of them were corrected by a contact lens, 10 by an intraocular implant. Unilateral aphakic young patients were submitted to the same tests. In the young patients the unilateral accommodation proves to be the main obstacle to binocularity. In the presbyopics there is no difference between intraocular and contact lens correction as to the quality of binocular functions. Which one of these two alternatives for the correction of unilateral aphakia should be preferred in the individual case must, therefore, be decided upon by other criteria than binocular vision. The results with unilateral spectacle correction demonstrate that binocular vision cannot be achieved by compensation of aniseikonia alone.

RESUMO

The effect of electrostimulation anaesthesia was studied in 23 patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured 30 minutes after premedication (I), immediately after intubation (II), after the start of stimulation and relaxation (III) and after the establishment of full relaxation and achievement of full stimulation (IV). After intubation IOP increased from 16.4 +/- 3.3 mm Hg to 19.4 +/- 5.6 mm Hg (p less than 0.05), but decreased at reading IV statistically significantly compared with reading I to 12.7 +/- 2.8 mm Hg. To investigate the effect of electrostimulation alone on IOP, we performed tonometry on 10 control persons, in whom we observed a rise in IOP which can be attributed to current induced contractions of the extraocular muscles. The results demonstrate that there is a direct relation between electrostimulation and extraocular muscles, and we find it essential to relax the patients sufficiently to avoid hazards of IOP elevation.

RESUMO

Some aspects of the genetic etiology of strabismus are discussed. As our research on a 19-member family including discordant monozygotic twins demonstrates, an inherited sensoric defect does not necessarily lead to wide-angle strabismus. Inherited factors probably always combine with secondary factors to produce wide-angle stabismus.

RESUMO

122 strabismus patients have been refracted in order to compare the cycloplegic effect of Cyclopentolat-HCl (Zyklolat) and atropin. In young patients the cycloplegic effect of Zyklolat is not as sufficient as that of atropin is. Moreover the positions of cylindrical axes show differences up to 30 degrees under Zyklolat in comparison with atropin. On the other hand we give a report of our experience using the Auto-Refractor 6600, the before-mentioned measurings were performed with. -- The important field of the Auto-Refractor is the routine refractioning of co-operative patients. Using it on young children which are unco-operative the Auto-Refractor is not as sufficient as we hoped it to be.

RESUMO

Thirty-two rabbits infected with Fumigatus keratitis were treated for a period of 10 to 20 days with a new antifungal agent known as "BAY b 5097" (Canesten). It was administered to 6 animals (500 mg/kg body weight; 12 eyes) orally; 20 received unilateral topical treatment. In both groups the therapy failed to supress mycosis in the avascular cornea. In topical treatment problems concerning common solvents arise: They are unable to reach the intracorneal infection, and most of them are incompatible for conjunctival use.

RESUMO

Whole-body X-irradiation administered to rabbits prior to intracorneal inoculation with Candida albicans is required to produce a verifiable mycotic keratitis. Damage to the corneal tissue, which in rabbits is generally resistant to Candida, can thus be avoided. The mycosis usually lasts for a period of 12 to 14 days. Twenty-four animals (48 eyes) were infected. The fungi were recultivated in 21 animals (24 eyes). All attempts were successful.
