Effects of an Online Mind-Body Training Program on the Default Mode Network: An EEG Functional Connectivity Study.

Online mind-body training (MBT) programs can improve the psychological capabilities of practitioners. Although there has been a lot of effort to understand the neural mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of meditation, little is known about changes in electroencephalographic (EEG) functional connectivity that accompany mind-body training. The present study aimed to investigate how an online MBT program alters EEG functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN). We assessed a group of healthcare providers, including 14 females who participated in the 4-week MBT program and 15 females who underwent a 4-week of waiting period. EEG data and information about psychological states were obtained at baseline and 4 weeks. The result was that the intervention group showed significant reductions in anxiety and trait anger that were accompanied by increased global DMN network strengths in the theta and alpha (but not beta and delta) frequency bands; these changes were not observed in the control group. Other variables including state anger, positive and negative affect, and self-esteem have not been changed over time in both groups. These findings suggest that practicing the mind-body training could have a relevance to the functional differences in network related to stress and anxiety reaction.

Effects of an Online Imagery-Based Treatment Program in Patients with Workplace-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: We developed easily accessible imagery-based treatment program for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to workplace accidents and investigated the effects of the program on various PTSD related symptoms. METHODS: The program was based on an online platform and consisted of eight 15-min sessions that included script-guided imagery and supportive music. Thirty-five patients with workplace-related PTSD participated in this program 4 days per week for 4 weeks. Its effects were examined using self-report questionnaires before and after the take-home online treatment sessions. RESULTS: After completing the 4-week treatment program, patients showed significant improvements in depressed mood (t=3.642, p=0.001) based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), anxiety (t=3.198, p=0.003) based on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder seven-item (GAD-7) scale, and PTSD symptoms (t=5.363, p<0.001) based on the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Check List (PCL). In particular, patients with adverse childhood experiences exhibited a greater degree of relief related to anxiety and PTSD symptoms than those without adverse childhood experiences. CONCLUSION: The present. RESULTS: demonstrated that the relatively short online imagery-based treatment program developed for this study had beneficial effects for patients with workplace-related PTSD.

Entropy of international trades.

The organization of international trades is highly complex under the collective efforts towards economic profits of participating countries given inhomogeneous resources for production. Considering the trade flux as the probability of exporting a product from a country to another, we evaluate the entropy of the world trades in the period 1950-2000. The trade entropy has increased with time, and we show that it is mainly due to the extension of trade partnership. For a given number of trade partners, the mean trade entropy is about 60% of the maximum possible entropy, independent of time, which can be regarded as a characteristic of the trade fluxes' heterogeneity and is shown to be derived from the scaling and functional behaviors of the universal trade-flux distribution. The correlation and time evolution of the individual countries' gross-domestic products and the number of trade partners show that most countries achieved their economic growth partly by extending their trade relationship.

The Effects of an Online Mind-Body Training Program on Stress, Coping Strategies, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Psychological State.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of an online mind-body training (MBT) program on participants' stress, anger, coping strategies, emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive and negative affect. Forty-two healthy women participated in an online MBT program for approximately 8-10 minutes a day for 8 weeks; a control group of 45 healthy women did not participate in the program. Self-report psychological questionnaires were administered before the beginning of the program and at 4 and 8 weeks following its onset. Data from the MBT group and the control group were compared using repeated measures ANOVA and Student's t-tests. Significant time x group interaction effects were found with respect to stress, coping strategies, anger, emotional intelligence, negative affect and resilience. These results demonstrate beneficial effects of the online MBT program and significant improvements in the psychological capabilities of participants compared with the control group. The effects of online MBT program were similar with those of the previous offline MBT in psychological aspects, suggesting further studies for neuroscientific evidence related stress and emotion of online MBT effects.

A concise synthesis of a promising protein kinase C inhibitor: D-erythro-sphingosine.

In this study, we explored a convenient and concise route for synthesis of D-erythro-sphingosine 1 from commercially available and cheap L-serine. The key steps are simple preparation of amino ketone 5 from Weinreb amide 3 and high diastereoselective reduction of amino ketone 5 to give the natural erythro-(anti-) isomer.

Alleviation of Cd toxicity by composted sewage sludge in Cd-treated Schmidt birch (Betula schmidtii) seedlings.

We investigated alleviation of Cd toxicity and changes in the physiological characteristics of Betula schmidtii seedlings following application of composted sewage sludge to Cd-treated plants. Plants were grown under four test conditions: control, Cd treatment, sludge amendment, and Cd treatment with sludge amendment. B. schmidtii treated with Cd only accumulated the greatest amount of Cd in the leaves, but absorbed Cd was also highly concentrated in the roots. In contrast, Cd concentrations in the Cd and sludge amendment treated seedlings were the lowest in the roots. Since sludge amendment increased the growth of seedlings, it may have alleviated toxicity by dilution of Cd. Additionally, the absorbed Cd was more widely distributed since it was transported from the roots and accumulated in the stems and leaves of Cd and sludge treated plants. Cd treatment inhibited the growth and physiological functions of B. schmidtii seedlings, but sludge amendment compensated for these effects and improved growth and physiological functions in both Cd-treated and control plants. SOD activity in the leaves of seedlings was increased in the Cd-treated plants, but not in the Cd and sludge amendment treated seedlings. In conclusion, alleviation of Cd toxicity in response to sludge amendment may be related to a dilution effect, in which the Cd concentration in the tissues was effectively lowered by the improved growth performance of the seedlings.

Diastereoselective synthesis of polysubstituted pyrrolidinone as a key intermediate for the anticancer agents by palladium(II)-catalyzed carboxylation.

Palladium(II)-catalyzed carboxylation of chiral olefins 6a-d has been examined under various conditions. In the weak basic condition (K2CO3), 7a-d were obtained in good yields. Alternatively, in the strong basic condition, pyrrolidinones 8a-d were obtained resulting in excellent yields and with high diastereoselectivity.

Diastereoselective synthesis of anti-1,2-aminoalcohol by palladium(II) catalyzed aza-Claisen rearrangement.

In this study, a highly diastereoselective synthesis of anti-1,2-aminoalcohol was explored starting from L-amino acids as chiral sources. The higher yield and diastereoselectivity was shown when the aza-Claisen rearrangement was performed with allylic trichloroacetimidate 6a in the presence of palladium(II) catalyst.

Total synthesis of sphingofungin F.

[reaction: see text] A concise, stereocontrolled synthesis of sphingofungin F was achieved. Key features involve diastereoselective oxazoline formation catalyzed by palladium(0), MgBr(2)-promoted gamma-alkoxy allylic stannane addition, and palladium(0)-catalyzed coupling of a vinyl iodide with an organozinc reagent.

Toxoplasma antibodies by indirect latex agglutination tests in zoo animals.

Total of 216 animals conserved in Seoul Grand Park were examined on the antibody titers of Toxoplasma by the indirect latex agglutination test, 20 out of 131 cases (15.3%) in mammals, 2 out of 75 cases (2.7%) in birds, and none in reptiles, according to species, 15 out of 68 species (22.1%) in mammals, 2 out of 36 species (5.6%) in birds showed positive antibody titers when the titers of 1:32 or higher were regarded as positive. In mammals, it appeared as positive in 2 out of 6 cases (1 out of 3 species ) in marsupials, 1 out of 15 cases (1 out of 11 species) in primates, 1 out of 1 case in bats, 6 out of 13 cases (5 out of 10 species) in carnivores, 1 in 12 cases (1 species out of 3) in odd-toed ungulates, 9 out of 80 cases (6 species out of 38) in even-toed ungulates, and none in rodents and in whales. In birds, 1 out of 21 cases (1 out of 7 species) in gallinaceous birds and 1 out of 6 (5 species ) in parrots appeared to have the positive antibody titers of Toxoplasma. And, none of reptiles showed positive. Frequencies of positive antibody titers were high in 1: 64, 9 cases in mammals followed by 1: 32, 6 cases, 1: 128, 3 cases, and 1: 256, 2 cases, respectively. Two positive cases in birds appeared to be 1: 64.
