RESUMO
Fifty-six patients with refractory multiple myeloma were treated with intermittent courses of etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide and high-dose betamethasone (EACB) every 4th week. The overall response rate was 30%. Durable remissions exceeding 1 year were obtained in 12 of the 17 responding patients. A significant prolongation of the survival time was found for responding patients (median 13 months) compared to those patients who did not respond (median 9 months) to EACB therapy (p = 0.01). A low frequency of neutropenic fever episodes was noted compared to other salvage treatment regimens. The EACB regimen was usually well tolerated and could be administered safely on an out-patient basis. This regimen might be an alternative especially for elderly patients unresponsive to initial therapy.

Ciliary ganglia of 8 to 19 days in ovo and 1 to 10 days posthatched chickens have been investigated with the freeze-fracture technique. The satellite cell membrane contained at all ages specific small intramembrane particles about 6-7 nm in size and arranged in an orthogonal order (OAPs). Along with these specialized particles, gap junctions and tight junctional strands were found between adjacent satellite cells.

Combined retrograde axonal tracing with the fluorescent dye Fast Blue and fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase (FRAP) histochemistry revealed that the FRAP-containing sensory neurons project to both somatic and autonomic peripheral nerves. Furthermore, the combination of indirect immunohistochemistry after colchicine treatment and FRAP histochemistry showed that a population of FRAP-containing sensory neurons are also substance P, cholecystokinin or somatostatin positive.
