OBJECTIVES: To explore the efficacy of Hyaluronic acid as an adjunctive in treatment of gingival recessions (GR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in several electronic databases, including Medline/ PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and LILACS. Recession improvement was evaluated through multiple outcome variables. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and the ROBINS-I tool were used to assess the quality of the included trials. Weighted Mean Differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between test and control sites were estimated through meta-analysis using a random-effect model for the amount of Relative Root Coverage (RRC). RESULTS: A total of 3 randomised studies were deemed as eligible for inclusion. Their data were also used for pooling the effect estimates. Overall analysis of RRC (3 studies) presented a WMD of 7.49% (p = 0.42; 95% CIs -10.88, 25.86) in favour of adjunctive use of hyaluronic acid during Coronally Advanced Flap (CAF) technique, although statistical significance was not reached. Statistical heterogeneity was found to be high (I2 = 80%). CONCLUSIONS: Within their limitations, the present data indicate that the local application of Hyaluronic acid does not lead to additional clinical benefits when used as an adjunctive to the treatment of GR with CAF. However, due to the high heterogeneity among the studies, additional well-designed RCTs are needed to provide further evidence on this clinical indication for the use of Hyaluronic acid. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the frame of the current review, the adjunctive use of Hyaluronic acid does not additionally improve the clinical outcomes obtained during treatment of GR with CAF.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the efficacy of different alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques on dimensional alterations after tooth extraction, based on clinical measurements. BACKGROUND: Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a common procedure in every day clinical practice, when dental implants are involved in treatment planning. In ARP procedures, a bone grafting material is combined with a socket sealing (SS) material in order to compensate the alveolar ridge dimensional alterations after tooth extraction. Xenograft and allograft are the most frequently used bone grafts in ARP, while free gingival graft (FGG), collagen membrane, and collagen sponge (CS) usually applied as SS materials. The evidence comparing xenograft and allograft directly in ARP procedure is scarce. In addition, FGG is usually combined with xenograft as SS material, while the evidence combing allograft with FGG is absent. Moreover, CS could probably be an alternative choice in ARP as SS material, since it has been used in previous studies but more clinical trials are required to evaluate its effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients were randomly assigned in four treatment groups: (A) freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) covered with collagen sponge (CS), (B) FDBA covered with free gingival graft (FGG), (C) demineralized bovine bone mineral xenograft (DBBM) covered with FGG, and (D) FGG alone. Clinical measurements were performed immediately after tooth extraction and 4 months later. The related outcomes pertained to both vertical and horizontal assessment of bone loss. RESULTS: Overall, groups A, B, and C presented significantly less vertical and horizontal bone resorption compared to group D. No statistically significant difference was observed between allograft and xenograft, except for the vertical bone resorption at the buccal central site, where xenograft showed marginally statistically significantly reduced bone loss compared to allograft (group C vs group B: adjusted ß coef: 1.07 mm; 95%CI: 0.01, 2.10; p = 0.05). No significant differences were observed in hard tissue dimensions when CS and FGG were applied over FDBA. CONCLUSIONS: No differences between FDBA and DBBM could practically be confirmed. In addition, CS and FGG were equally effective socket sealing materials when combined with FDBA, regarding bone resorption. More RCTs are needed to compare the histological differences between FDBA and DBBM and the effect of CS and FGG on soft tissue dimensional changes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Xenograft and allograft were equally efficient in ARP 4 months after tooth extraction in horizontal level. Xenograft maintained the mid-buccal site of the socket marginally better than the allograft, in vertical level. FGG and CS were equally efficient as SS materials regarding the hard tissue dimensional alterations. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical trial registration Number: NCT04934813 (clinicaltrials.gov).

Recent advances in atomically thin two dimensional (2D) anisotropic group IVA -VI metal monochalcogenides (MMCs) and their fascinating intrinsic properties and potential applications are hampered due to an ongoing challenge of monolayer isolation. Among the most promising MMCs, tin (II) sulfide (SnS) is an earth-abundant layered material with tunable bandgap and anisotropic physical properties, which render it extraordinary for electronics and optoelectronics. To date, however, the successful isolation of atomically thin SnS single layers at large quantities has been challenging due to the presence of strong interlayer interactions, attributed to the lone-pair electrons of sulfur. Here, a novel liquid phase exfoliation approach is reported, which enables the overcome of such strong interlayer binding energy. Specifically, it demonstrates that the synergistic action of external thermal energy with the ultrasound energy-induced hydrodynamic force in solution gives rise to the systematic isolation of highly crystalline SnS monolayers (1L-SnS). It is shown that the exfoliated 1L-SnS crystals exhibit high carrier mobility and deep-UV spectral photodetection, featuring a fast carrier response time of 400 ms. At the same time, monolayer-based SnS transistor devices fabricated from solution present a high on/off ratio, complemented with a responsivity of 6.7 × 10-3 A W-1 and remarkable stability upon prolonged operation in ambient conditions. This study opens a new avenue for large-scale isolation of highly crystalline SnS and other MMC manolayers for a wide range of applications, including extended area nanoelectronic devices, printed from solution.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is the most important therapeutic intervention for end-stage liver disease (ELD). The prioritization of these patients is based on the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), which can successfully predict short-term mortality. However, despite its great validity and value, it cannot fully incor porate several comorbidities of liver disease, such as sarcopenia and physical frailty, variables that can sufficiently influence the survival of such patients. Subsequently, there is growing interest in the importance of physical frailty in regard to mortality in liver transplant candidates and recipients, as well as its role in improving their survival rates. AIM: To evaluate the effects of an active lifestyle on physical frailty on liver transplant candidates. METHODS: An observational study was performed within the facilities of the Department of Transplant Surgery of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Twenty liver tran splant candidate patients from the waiting list of the department were included in the study. Patients that were bedridden, had recent cardiovascular incidents, or had required inpatient treatment for more than 5 d in the last 6 mo were excluded from the study. The following variables were evaluated: Activity level via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); functional capacity via the 6-min walking test (6MWT) and cardiopulmonary exercise testing; and physical frailty via the Liver Frailty Index (LFI). RESULTS: According to their responses in the IPAQ, patients were divided into the following two groups based on their activity level: Active group (A, 10 patients); and sedentary group (S, 10 patients). Comparing mean values of the recorded variables showed the following results: MELD (A: 12.05 ± 5.63 vs S: 13.99 ± 3.60; P > 0.05); peak oxygen uptake (A: 29.78 ± 6.07 mL/kg/min vs S: 18.11 ± 3.39 mL/kg/min; P < 0.001); anaerobic threshold (A: 16.71 ± 2.17 mL/kg/min vs S: 13.96 ± 1.45 mL/kg/min; P < 0.01); 6MWT (A: 458.2 ± 57.5 m vs S: 324.7 ± 55.8 m; P < 0.001); and LFI (A: 3.75 ± 0.31 vs S: 4.42 ± 0.32; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: An active lifestyle can be associated with better musculoskeletal and functional capacity, while simultaneously preventing the evolution of physical frailty in liver transplant candidates. This effect appears to be independent of the liver disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Among the total reported cases of pancreatic duct adenocarcinomas, around 1-2.9% are adenosquamous carcinomas of the pancreas. Due to limited data, preoperative diagnosis is a great challenge for physicians, and it is usually set post-operational, based on the pathologist report. We operated on two cases of adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas, which we present alongside the operation and treatment planning. CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old Caucasian female and a 63-year-old Caucasian male presented themselves with jaundice in our department. The abdomen computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed lesions of the pancreas. A pancreas-duodenumectomy was performed in both patients, and the post-operational histology analysis revealed adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas head. The patients were discharged in good condition and received further chemotherapy treatment after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Two case reports of adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas are described here, which both underwent surgery resection. The limited available literature on this topic substantially limits the knowledge and guidance on treatment. A summarization of the available literature is attempted, alongside a description of possible fields of future research.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) started a revolution that changed age-old surgical stereotypical practices regarding the overall management of the surgical patient. In the last decade, ERAS has gained significant acceptance in the community of general surgery, in addition to several other surgical specialties, as the evidence of its advantages continues to grow. One of the last remaining fields, given its significant complexity and intricate nature, is liver transplantation (LT). AIM: To investigate the existing efforts at implementing ERAS in LT. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the existing studies that evaluate ERAS in orthotopic LT, with a multimodal approach and focusing on measurable clinical primary endpoints, namely length of hospital stay. RESULTS: All studies demonstrated a considerable decrease in length of hospital stay, with no readmission or negative impact of the ERAS protocol applied to the postoperative course. CONCLUSIONS: ERAS is a well-validated multimodal approach for almost all types of surgical procedures, and its future in selected LT patients seems promising, as the preliminary results advocate for the safety and efficacy of ERAS in the field of LT.

Protein amyloidosis represents the main pathological hallmark of many incurable neurodegenerative disorders and protein misfolding diseases. Nanomaterials-based approaches give rise to diagnosis and/or prediction of these proteinopathies, with regards to the multifactorial nature of their pathogenesis. Herein, crystalline truncated hexagonal shaped naked ZnO nanoparticles (mean value 47.4 nm) have been solvothermally prepared and immobilized further with alizarin (Alzn) molecules (54%) to stand up to amyloidosis acting both as inhibitors and imaging agents, as well as antioxidants. Thioflavin-T (ThT) assay revealed that the resulted zinc oxide nanoparticles immobilized with alizarin (ZnO@Alzn NPs) inhibited in vitro insulin amyloids formation in a dose-dependent manner, while the kinetic mechanism of the phenomenon was recorded. In parallel, amyloid oligomers and plaques have been visualized by conventional optical microscopy upon protein co-incubation with ZnO@Alzn NPs, highlighting the imaging ability of the immobilized NPs. The antioxidant activity was monitored by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, through which it was shown that alizarin incorporation onto the inorganic core leads to the reduction of IC50 values from 221 µg/mL to 167 µg/mL. The enhanced free radical scavenging effects of ZnO@Alzn compared to the naked-ZnO NPs, features their prospect to serve additional functions.

Skin tissue repair is of fundamental importance for maintaining homeostasis regulation, protection barrier, absorption, and excretion of skin tissue. Wound healing is a complicated process that can be impaired by infections and therefore have a significant economic and social impact. Simultaneously, the overuse of antibiotics has led to antimicrobial resistance and loss of their efficacy. Thus, the need for alternative antimicrobial agents is urgent. The newest approaches on wound dressings employ new therapeutic agents, such as probiotics. Probiotics alone or in tandem with nanotechnology-based techniques exhibit a broad range of benefits on surgical wounds. This systematic review aims to consider current knowledge of probiotic effects on animals and humans regarding surgical wound healing and provide new insights into the role of nanotechnology. The databases included were PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Cochrane Library (CENTRAL). Studies focused on burns, chronic wounds, and diabetic ulcers were excluded. The promising industry of probiotics demonstrates a significant upsurge as more and more healthy individuals rely their well-being on alternative medicine. Included probiotics illustrated positive results on wound re-epithelization, neovascularization, and wound healing. No adverse effects were noted.

INTRODUCTION: The nature of the surface is critical in determining the biological activity of silica powders. A novel correlation between toxicity and surface properties of bioactive glass ceramics (BGCs) synthesized via the sol-gel method was attempted in this study. METHODS: The behavior of BGCs after their attachment to the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) was evaluated and their toxic effects were determined based on hemolysis, membrane injury via anti-phosphotyrosine immunoblot of Band 3, lipid peroxidation, potential to generate reactive oxygen species, and antioxidant enzyme production. In particular, three BGCs were synthesized and treated at three sintering temperatures (T1 = 835 °C, T2 = 1000 °C and T3 = 1100 °C) to investigate possible relation between surface charge or structure and hemolytic potential. RESULTS: Their toxicity based on hemolysis was dose dependent, while BGC-T2 had the best hemocompatibility in compare with the other BGCs.No BGCs in dosages lower than 0.125 mg/mL could damage erythrocytes. On the other hand, all BGCs promoted the production of reactive oxygen species in certain concentrations, with the BGC-T2 producing the lowest ROS and increasing the glutathione levels in RBCs protecting their damage. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that various factors such as size, a probable different proportion of surface silanols, a balanced mechanism between calcium and magnesium cellular uptake or the different crystalline nature may have contributed to this finding; however, future research is needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms.
