RESUMO

Endometrial tuberculosis (TB) is a known cause of infertility in women which, because of the global increase in the spread of TB, should always be considered when investigating the cause of infertility. We undertook this review in order to determine its incidence among infertile women in the Nigerian middle belt. This is a retrospective study of all histopathological slides of infertile women seen at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria, between 1997 and 2004 who were evaluated for infertility by endometrial biopsy. The slides were reviewed and, where necessary, new sections were cut from tissue blocks and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Ziehl-Neelsen stain used to demonstrate acid-fast bacilli. Clinical reports were extracted from histopathological request form. A total of 661 patients were included in the study. Primary infertility constituted 30%, secondary 69% and unspecified cases 1%. TB endometritis was seen in 0.45%. Endometrial TB is not a frequent cause of infertility in our set-up. However, with the worldwide resurgence of TB, its possible presence should always be taken into consideration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine the diagnostic value of lymph-node biopsy, commonest causes of lymph node enlargement requiring biopsy and the usual nodes involved. METHODS: A retrospective study of 169 lymph node biopsies representing 97% of lymph node biopsies and 3.2% of total biopsies specimen received at Pathology Department of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Ilorin, Nigeria over a 5 year period was undertaken. RESULTS: Tuberculous lymphadenitis (38%) and metastatic nodal involvement (25%) were the commonest causes of lymph node enlargement. Generalised lymphadenopathy occurred in 105 (62%) patients while localised enlargement was seen in 64{38%) of cases. The commonest sites of localised lymphadenopathy were axillary (38%), cervical (32%), inguinal (8%), and submandibular (8%). While axillary lymph node enlargements were mostly associated with tumour metastasis, cervical node enlargements were mostly associated with tuberculosis. Supraclavicular lymphadenopathy has the highest risk of malignancy. CONCLUSION: The result shows that tuberculous lymphadenitis and metastatic nodal malignancies are the commonest causes of lymph node enlargement in our environment. Reasons for this include the often involvement of lymph nodes in tuberculous infections {as lymphadenitis constituted the most frequent form of extra pulmonary tuberculosis} and cancer's metastasis. With an effective and nationwide immunisation against tuberculosis, health education on HIV infection coupled with early screening and detection of malignancies in generals, we hope this trend will change in the future. Lymph node biopsy remains an important and valuable diagnostic tool in evaluation of lymph node enlargement as it allows for the architecture of the gland to be viewed thereby given an accurate and concise diagnosis with very minimal risk to the patient.

RESUMO

The study was a 5 year histopathological survey of endometrial biopsies seen at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital ; Ilorin; North Central Nigeria from January 1st 1997 to December 31st 2001. It aimed at identifying the morphological patterns of endometrial disorders; prevalence of these disorders and the histopathological changes associated with the clinical diagnosis in Ilorin; Nigeria. Eight hundred and eighty two slides of cases of endometrial disorders recorded in the register of the Department of Pathology; University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital; Ilorin; North Central Nigeria were reviewed. Clinical data on each of the cases was retrieved from request cards. The pathological reports and clinical data were recorded noting the age; clinical history; morphological description of lesions and the histological types. The mean age of the studied group was 28 years. The commonest indication for endometrial sampling was infertility (55.3
