Eumycetoma by Madurella grisea. Report of the first case observed in the southern Brazilian region.

The first case of eumycetoma by Madurella grisea occurred in Southern Brazilian Region is herein related. In addition, Brazilian literature on this subject was reviewed and, the geographic distribution of this eumycetoma is presented.

[Cryptococcosis in children in the State of Pará, Brazil]. / Criptococose em crianças no Estado do Pará, Brasil.

We report 19 cases of cryptococcosis in children, diagnosed in Belém, PA. In nine patients the variety of the etiologic agent was studied and identified as Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii. The average age of these patients was 7.8 years (range, 5-13 years) There were 5 girls and 4 boys (ratio, 1.25:1). Amphotericin B treatment (associated with fluconazole 3 or fluocytosine 1) was given but five (56%) of these patients died in the following three months. The existence of highly endemic areas of infection by var. gattii in Pará, Brazil and the severity of the disease due to this fungal variety are commented.

Subcutaneous scedosporiosis. Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Two cases of subcutaneous scedosporiosis, caused by Scedosporium apiospermum, are reported. Both patients had lesions localized in the forearm: a solitary ulceration in one and a sporotrichoid-like lesion in the other. The literature is reviewed.

Chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis in Brazil: report of two cases with cavitation diagnosed by transthoracic needle biopsy.

Two cases of Chronic Pulmonary Histoplasmosis are reported and other eleven cases, collected from Brazilian literature, are commented. After being clinically cured, one of our patients presented an Aspergillus fungus ball inside a cavitation in the wall of which H. capsulatum was disclosed. Comments are also done on the diagnosis of the mycosis.
