RESUMO

Agro-industrial residues have attracted attention for their applications in the field of biodegradable packaging. Recently, our research group has developed onion-based films with promising properties for this type of application due to their non-toxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of Laponite clay concentration on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of the onion-based films, which were prepared by a casting method. The XRD and FTIR data confirm the presence of the mineral clay in the onion-based films. These findings are consistent with those obtained from FE-SEM analysis, which revealed the presence of typical Laponite grains. In terms of wettability, the results show that the clay decreases the hydrophilic character of the material but slightly increases the water vapor permeation. Optical characterization revealed that the materials exhibited zero transmittance in the UV region and increased opacity in the visible region for composites containing 5% and 10% Laponite. Furthermore, the antioxidant test demonstrated higher antioxidant potential in the composites compared to the pure films. Consequently, these results suggest that the formation of Laponite and onion composites could be an essential strategy for developing natural polymers in the field of food contact packaging.

RESUMO

This study examined the extent to which different high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) protocols could influence psychophysiological responses in moderately active young men. Fourteen participants completed, in a randomized order, three cycling protocols (SIT: 4 × 30-second all-out sprints; Tabata: 7 × 20 seconds at 170% ⋮O2max; and HIIT: 10 × 60 seconds at 90% HRmax) and three running HIIT protocols (4 × 4 minutes at 90%-95% HRmax, 5 × at v⋮O2max, and 4 × 1,000 meters at a rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of 8, from the OMNI-Walk/Run scale). Oxygen uptake (⋮O2), heart rate, and RPE were recorded during each interval. Affective responses were assessed before and after each trial. The Tabata protocol elicited the highest ⋮O2 and RPE responses, and the least pleasant session-affect among the cycling trials. The v⋮O2max elicited the highest ⋮O2 and RPE responses and the lowest mean session-affect among the running trials. Findings highlight the limited application of SIT and some HIIT protocols to individuals with low fitness levels.

RESUMO

This study shows that there are some ionic crystals which after irradiation with high gamma dose Dm and subsequent irradiation with low doses ranging up to 500Gy present a decreasing TL intensity as dose increases. This interesting feature can be used as a calibration curve in radiation dosimetry. Such behavior can be found in green quartz, three varieties of beryl and pink tourmaline. In all these silicate crystals it can be shown that irradiation with increasing γ-dose there is a dose Dm for which the TL intensity is maximum. Of course, Dm varies depending on the crystal and irradiated crystal with the dose Dm is stable. If one of these crystals is taken and irradiated with doses from low values up to 400-500Gy, a curve of decreasing TL intensity is obtained; such a curve can be used as a calibration curve.

RESUMO

Congenital syphilis remains a public health matter, with no perspective of reaching governmental reduction goals. There are few studies about social inequalities and its relation with this disease in Brazil. Objective: describe occurrence of congenital syphilis in a reference hospital in a Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro State, according to socioeconomic and clinical-laboratorial variables as well. Methods: cross-sectional study, basedon interviews, review of medical records and prenatal cards. Population: all women admitted to a maternity ward during a trimester in 2011. Maternal variables: age, schooling, skin color, income, prenatal visits. Fetus/neonate variables: birth weight, gestational age, clinical and laboratory outcomes.Incidence of congenital syphilis (Brazilian Ministry of Health criteria) was calculated for all live births and for each social and economical variable. Results: there were 666 eligible women, comprehending 576 deliveries ? 558 live births and 18 stillbirths. We identified 22 CS cases: 18 live births, threefetal deaths and 1 abortion. One of the neonates died in the third day of life. The incidence of CS was of 39.4/1,000 live births. Socioeconomic variables - low education, low income and black skin - were related to a greater incidence. Only 13 out of 22 cases were identified in prenatal care. Conclusion: ourresults pointed to social inequalities in the congenital syphilis incidence. As prenatal care is also related to socioeconomic variables, investments in quality of maternal assistance should be directed to more vulnerable women.
