RESUMO

Solvent-free chemical manufacturing is one of the awaited technologies for addressing an emergent issue of environmental pollution. Here, we report solvent-free autocatalytic supramolecular polymerization (SF-ASP), which provides an inhibition-free template-assisted catalytic organic transformation that takes great advantage of the fact that the product (template) undergoes a termination-free nucleation-elongation assembly (living supramolecular polymerization) under solvent-free conditions. SF-ASP allows for reductive cyclotetramerization of hydrogen-bonding phthalonitriles into the corresponding phthalocyanines in exceptionally high yields (>80%). SF-ASP requires the growing polymer to form hexagonally packed crystalline fibres, which possibly preorganize the phthalonitriles at their cross-sectional edges for their efficient transformation. With metal oleates, SF-ASP produces single-crystalline fibres of metallophthalocyanines again in exceptionally high yields, which grow in both directions without terminal coupling until the phthalonitrile precursors are completely consumed. By taking advantage of this living nature of polymerization, multistep SF-ASP without/with metal oleates allows for the precision synthesis of multi-block supramolecular copolymers.

Vesicle formation is a fundamental kinetic process related to the vesicle budding and endocytosis in a cell. In the vesicle formation by artificial means, transformation of lamellar lipid aggregates into spherical architectures is a key process and known to be prompted by e.g. heat, infrared irradiation, and alternating electric field induction. Here we report UV-light-driven formation of vesicles from particles consisting of crumpled phospholipid multilayer membranes involving a photoactive amphiphilic compound composed of 1,4-bis(4-phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) units. The particles can readily be prepared from a mixture of these components, which is casted on the glass surface followed by addition of water under ultrasonic radiation. Interestingly, upon irradiation with UV light, micrometer-size vesicles were generated from the particles. Neither infrared light irradiation nor heating prompted the vesicle formation. Taking advantage of the benefits of light, we successfully demonstrated micrometer-scale spatiotemporal control of single vesicle formation. It is also revealed that the BPEB units in the amphiphile are essential for this phenomenon.

Desulfovibrio spp. can be found in soil, water, and sewage, as well as in the digestive tracts of animals and humans. We report a case of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteremia during hospitalization with acute cerebral infarction following aspiration bronchopneumonia and severe diarrhea, and the case strongly suggests that Desulfovibrio spp. bacteremia can occur as an infection due to disturbance of endogenous gut flora including antibiotic administration. Because Desulfovibrio spp. is difficult to detect in short-time incubation, its bacteremia is possibly overlooked in hospitalized patients. A few clinical cases of D. desulfuricans bacteremia have been reported in Japan, and they are reviewed briefly in this article.
