Corneal blindness affects over 10 million patients worldwide. Due to the limited supply of donor corneas and frequent graft failure, bioengineered alternatives are crucial. To overcome drawbacks associated with corneal substitutes from synthetic biomaterials, fabrication from plant-derived biomaterials is a potential alternative. Herein, soy protein and glutenin in combination with different crosslinkers were evaluated for fabrication of corneal substitutes. Optical, mechanical, and biochemical properties of fabricated constructs and control rabbit corneas were evaluated in vitro. Soy protein crosslinked with peroxidase/H202 possessed transparency and mechanical properties comparable to controls, although their water content and biocompatibility were inferior. In contrast, soy protein crosslinked with tannic acid showed similar water content, tensile strength, and biocompatibility as rabbit corneas; however, these constructs displayed significantly lower transparency and higher strain to failure. Finally, glutenin cross-linked using formaldehyde showed excellent transparency, strain to failure, and biocompatibility, however; they exhibited significantly lower water content and tensile strength than controls. This study is the first to establish CIELAB color values for the rabbit cornea, allowing quantitative optical evaluation of tissue-engineered substitutes. Thus, a crosslinking strategy utilizing plant-derived proteins for fabrication of constructs with properties comparable to rabbit corneas is a promising direction for development of tissue-engineered corneal substitutes.

In advanced stages of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the pattern of joint involvement leads to varied types of foot deformities such as forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot deformities. We aim to evaluate midfoot and hindfoot deformities and their effect on functional outcomes in RA patients. In this prospective cross-sectional study clinical and radiological evaluations of 100 adult RA patients were studied for midfoot and hindfoot deformities. The RA disease activity, functional disability level, specific foot and ankle assessments, gait speed, and balance tests were assessed. Radiological examinations of the weight-bearing feet in a standing position were done. We found that the most frequent deformity type was the planovalgus foot (24%). There were statistically significant differences between the types of foot deformities and disease duration, disease activity, falls, Tinetti and Berg balance Test, and health assessment questionnaire-disability index. The multivariate regression analysis of independent correlates of falling detected that patients with equinovarus deformity were 2.5 times more liable for falling with 63.5% predictive power. According to the predictive criteria of deformity type for falling, the equinocavovarus type had accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 91%, 84.5%, 98.5%, 99%, and 84%, respectively. We found in RA patients, midfoot and hindfoot deformities cause a significant reduction of functional ability and quality of life. The early detection of foot deformities requires a good awareness of the clinical and radiographic diagnosis of different types of deformities thus reducing the possible functional disabilities via early management by combined orthotic, physiotherapy, and surgical treatments. BACKGROUND: The rates of obesity among immigrant populations within the USA rise with increasing duration of residency. The aims of this study were to examine weight self-perception and body image discrepancy within a large community sample of Hispanic and Somali predominantly immigrant adults. METHODS: Utilizing a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to collect survey data from a sample of adults who self-identified as Hispanic, Latino, or Somali in Southeast Minnesota. Correlations among actual body mass index (BMI), perceived weight category, and perceived body size were assessed with Spearman rank correlation coefficients. Associations of weight loss intentions with actual BMI, perceived weight category, perceived body size, and body image discrepancy were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric tests. RESULTS: A total of 1256 adults completed the survey and biometric measurements (610 Hispanic, 646 Somali); 81% (457) and 50% (328) had a BMI in the overweight or obese category in the Hispanic and Somali cohorts, respectively. Among participants with a BMI of > 25, more participants reported a perceived body size that was overweight or obese than a perceived weight category that was in the overweight or obese category (79% vs. 48%, p = < 0.0001). Body image discrepancy, but not actual BMI, was associated with weight loss intentions for both groups. Perceived body size and perceived weight category were associated with weight loss intentions for Hispanic participants only. CONCLUSIONS: Perceived body size is a more accurate self-report proxy of BMI-defined weight status compared with the perceived weight category among Hispanic and Somali immigrant groups. Body image discrepancy may be more predictive of weight loss intentions than actual BMI.

This study explores the innovative application of iron filings solid waste, a byproduct from mechanical workshops, as a heterogeneous catalyst in the production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil. Focusing on sustainability and waste valorization, the research presents a dual-benefit approach: addressing the environmental issue of solid waste disposal while contributing to the renewable energy sector. Particle size distribution analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and FTIR analysis were used to characterize the iron filings. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to guide a series of experiments that were conducted to identify the optimum transesterification settings. Important factors that greatly affect the production of biodiesel are identified by the study, including catalyst loading, reaction time, methanol-to-oil ratio, reaction temperature, and stirring rate. The catalyst proved to be successful as evidenced by the 96.4% biodiesel conversion efficiency attained under ideal conditions. The iron filings catalyst's reusability was evaluated, demonstrating its potential for numerous applications without noticeably decreasing activity. This work offers a road towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable chemical processes in energy production by making a strong argument for using industrial solid waste as a catalyst in the biodiesel manufacturing process.

Efficient catalysts play a pivotal role in advancing eco-friendly water treatment strategies, particularly in the removal of diverse organic contaminants found in water-petroleum sources. This study addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by contaminants, encompassing a spectrum of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn alongside pollutants like oily water (OIW), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dyes, and pharmaceuticals, posing threats to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Herein, we present the synthesis of biogenically derived Mn@NiO nanocomposite (NC) photocatalysts, a sustainable methodology employing an aqueous Rosmarinus officinalis L. extract, yielding particles with a size of 36.7 nm. The catalyst demonstrates exceptional efficacy in removing heavy metals, achieving rates exceeding 99-100% within 30 min, alongside notable removal efficiencies for OIW (98%), TSS (87%), and COD (98%). Furthermore, our photodegradation experiments showed remarkable efficiencies, with 94% degradation for Rose Bengal (RB) and 96% for methylene blue (MB) within 120 min. The degradation kinetics adhere to pseudo-first-order behavior, with rate constants of 0.0227 min-1 for RB and 0.0370 min-1 for MB. Additionally, the NC exhibits significant antibiotic degradation rates of 97% for cephalexin (CEX) and 96% for amoxicillin (AMOX). The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergistic interplay between the Mn and NiO nanostructures, augmenting responsiveness to sunlight while mitigating electron-hole pair recombination. Notably, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding stability and reusability across multiple cycles, maintaining its stable nanostructure without compromise.

This study addresses the pivotal challenge of hydrogen production through methane decomposition, offering a pathway to achieving clean energy goals. Investigating the utilization of titania-modified zirconia dual redox supports (10TiZr) in iron or doped iron-based catalysts for the CH4 decomposition reaction, our research involves a thorough characterization process. This includes analyses of the surface area porosity, X-ray diffraction, Raman-infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction/oxidation. The observed sustained enhancement in catalytic activity over extended durations suggests the in situ formation of catalytically active sites. The introduction of Co or Ni into the 30Fe/10TiZr catalyst leads to the generation of a higher density of reducible species. Furthermore, the Ni-promoted 30Fe/10TiZr catalyst exhibits a lower crystallinity, indicating superior dispersion. Notably, the cobalt-promoted 30Fe/10TiZr catalyst achieves over 80% CH4 conversion and H2 yield within 3 h. Additionally, the Ni-promoted 30Fe/10TiZr catalyst attains a remarkable 87% CH4 conversion and 82% H2 yield after 3 h of the continuous process.

Approximately 50% of global plastic wastes are produced from plastic packaging, a substantial amount of which is disposed of within a few minutes of its use. Although many plastic types are designed for single use, they are not always disposable. It is now widely acknowledged that the production and disposal of plastics have led to a plethora of negative consequences, including the contamination of both groundwater and soil resources and the deterioration of human health. The undeniable impact of excessive plastic manufacturing and waste generation on the global plastic pollution crisis has been well documented. Therefore, degradable polymers are a crucial solution to the problem of the non-degradation of plastic wastes. The disadvantage of degradable polymers is their high cost, so blending them with natural polymers will reduce the cost of final products and maximize their degradation rate, making degradable polymers competitive with industrial polymers that are currently in use daily. In this work, we will delineate various degradable polymers, including polycaprolactone, starch, and cellulose. Furthermore, we will elucidate several aspects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and its blends with natural polymers to show the effects of adding natural polymers on PVA properties. This paper will study cost-effective and ecologically acceptable polymers by combining inexpensive natural polymers with readily accessible biodegradable polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).

PURPOSE: We aimed to report the early results of performing acute ankle arthrodesis using a modified retrograde femoral intramedullary locking IMN concomitant with plating at the same setting for managing diabetic patients' acute ankle fractures. METHODS: We prospectively included patients who presented acutely with ankle fractures, where hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) on admission was > 7%, and the Adelaide Fracture in the Diabetic Ankle (AFDA) algorithm score was 5 or above. All patients were treated by acute ankle arthrodesis using a modified retrograde femoral IMN combined with lateral plating. Functional assessment was reported according to a modified American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle hindfoot scale (AOFAS), and complications were documented. RESULTS: Six patients had an average age of 55.7 years (37-65). The average HbA1C on admission was 7.9 (7.3-9), and the average AFDA score was 7.3 (6-8). The average operative time was 79.2 min (70-90). All patients, except for one, achieved union at the arthrodesis site after an average of 10.3 weeks (8-14). After an average last follow-up of 9 months (6-12), the average modified AOFAS was 73.2 (82 to 62); four patients had an excellent score and one good. Complications developed in two, one deep infection after 2 weeks treated by metal removal and Ilizarov, and the other patient developed a stress fracture at the tibial end of the nail, which was treated by open reduction and internal fixation using a plate and screws. CONCLUSION: Using a modified femoral IMN combined with lateral plating is a promising technique to achieve ankle arthrodesis in diabetic patients with acute ankle fractures with acceptable outcomes; however, further studies with larger numbers are needed. Discrimination is detrimental to health. Little is known about perceived discrimination among Somali immigrants. We examined whether age or proportion of lifetime in the United States was associated with perceived discrimination among Somali immigrants. Guided by Intersectionality, we described a secondary analysis of Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) survey data from the Healthy Immigrant Community study. Younger participants ( ≤40 years) experienced more discrimination than older participants ( >40 years). Higher education, being male, and earning $20,000-$39,999 was associated with more perceived discrimination. These findings suggest that Somali immigrants who are younger, more formally educated, male, and/or earn $20,000-$39,000 report more discrimination than their counterparts. Possible explanations include exposure to discrimination outside the Somali community or more awareness about racism. Alternatively, the EDS may not capture the discrimination experienced by Somali women or older adults. Further research is needed to address the discrimination experienced by Somali immigrants. Herein, Cellulose-templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O nanocomposites were prepared using biological renewable cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose-templated Cu-doped ZnO catalysts with different amounts of Cu as the dopants (1, 2, 3, and 4%) were prepared and denoted CZ-1, CZ-2, CZ-3, and CZ-4, respectively, for simplicity. The prepared catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), and 2% Cu-doped ZnO (CZ-2) showed the best catalytic performance (82%), while the pure ZnO, CZ-1, CZ-3, and CZ-4 catalysts exhibited MB dye degradation efficiencies of 54, 63, 65, and 60%, respectively. The best catalyst (CZ-2) was chosen to further improve the degradation efficiency. Different amounts of AgNO3 (10, 15, 30, and 45 mg) were used for the deposition of Ag2O on the surface of CZ-2 and denoted CZA-10, CZA-15, CZA-30, and CZA-45, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, CZA-15 showed remarkable degradation efficiency and degraded 94% of MB, while the CZA-10, CZA-30, and CZA-45 catalysts showed 90, 81, and 79% degradation efficiencies, respectively, under visible light within 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced catalytic performance could be due to the smaller particle size, the higher electron and hole separation and charge transfer efficiencies, and the lower agglomeration in the composite catalyst system. The results also demonstrated that the Cu-doped ZnO prepared with cellulose as a template, followed by the optimum amount of Ag2O deposition, could have promising applications in the degradation of organic pollutants.

The rapid urbanization witnessed in developing countries in Asia and Africa has led to a substantial increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation. However, the corresponding disposal strategies, along with constraints in land resources and finances, compounded by unorganized public behaviour, have resulted in ineffective policy implementation and monitoring. This lack of systematic and targeted orientation, combined with blind mapping, has led to inefficient development in many areas. This review examines the key challenges of MSW management in developing countries in Asia and Africa from 2013 to 2023, drawing insights from 170 academic papers. Rather than solely focusing on recycling, the study proposes waste sorting at the source, optimization of landfill practices, thermal treatment measures, and strategies to capitalize on the value of waste as more pertinent solutions aligned with local realities. Barriers to optimizing management systems arise from socio-economic factors, infrastructural limitations, and cultural considerations. The review emphasizes the importance of integrating the study area into the circular economy framework, with a focus on enhancing citizen participation in solid waste reduction and promoting recycling initiatives, along with seeking economic assistance from international organizations.

Drinking water defluoridation has attracted significant attention in the scientific community, from which membrane technology, by exploring thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes, has demonstrated a great potential for treating fluoride-contaminated water. This study investigates the development of a TFN membrane by integrating titanium oxide nanosheets (TiO2 NSs) into the polyamide (PA) layer using interfacial polymerization. The characterization results suggest that successfully incorporating TiO2 NSs into the PA layer of the TFN membrane led to a surface with a high negative charge, hydrophilic properties, and a smooth surface at the nanoscale. The TFN membrane, containing 80 ppm of TiO2 NSs, demonstrated a notably high fluoride rejection rate of 98%. The Donnan-steric-pore-model-dielectric-exclusion model was employed to analyze the effect of embedding TiO2 NSs into the PA layer of TFN on membrane properties, including charge density (Xd), the pore radius (rp), and pore dielectric constant (εp). The results indicated that embedding TiO2 NSs increased Xd and decreased the εp by less than the TFC membrane without significantly affecting the rp. The resulting TFN membrane demonstrates promising potential for application in water treatment systems, providing an effective and sustainable solution for fluoride remediation in drinking water.

AIMS: Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is renowned as a deadly primary cancer of hepatic origin. Sorafenib is the drug-of-choice for targeted treatment of unresectable end-stage HCC. Unfortunately, great proportion of HCC patients showed intolerance or unresponsiveness to treatment. This study assesses potency of novel ProTide; SH-PAN-19 against N-Nitrosodiethylamine (DEN)-induced HCC in male Wistar rats, compared to Sorafenib. MAIN METHODS: Structural entity of the synthesized compound was substantiated via FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis. In vitro, SH-PAN-19 cytotoxicity was tested against 3 human cell lines; hepatocellular carcinoma; HepG-2, colorectal carcinoma; HCT-116 and normal fibroblasts; MRC-5. In vivo, therapeutic efficacy of SH-PAN-19 (300 mg/kg b.w./day) against HCC could be revealed and compared to that of Sorafenib (15 mg/kg b.w./day) by evaluating the morphometric, biochemical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular key markers. KEY FINDINGS: SH-PAN-19 was relatively safe toward MRC-5 cells (IC50 = 307.6 µg/mL), highly cytotoxic to HepG-2 cells (IC50 = 24.9 µg/mL) and prominently hepato-selective (TSI = 12.35). Oral LD50 of SH-PAN-19 was >3000 mg/kg b.w. DEN-injected rats suffered hepatomegaly, oxidative stress, elevated liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia, bilirubinemia and skyrocketed AFP plasma titre. SH-PAN-19 alleviated the DEN-induced alterations in apoptotic, angiogenic and inflammatory markers. SH-PAN-19 produced a 2.5-folds increase in Caspase-9 and downregulated VEGFR-2, IL-6, TNF-α, TGFß-1, MMP-9 and CcnD-1 to levels comparable to that elicited by Sorafenib. SH-PAN-19 resulted in near-complete pathological response versus partial response achieved by Sorafenib. SIGNIFICANCE: This research illustrated that SH-PAN-19 is a promising chemotherapeutic agent capable of restoring cellular plasticity and could stop HCC progression.

BACKGROUND: Cranial radiotherapy is standard of care for high-grade brain tumors and metastases; however, it induces debilitating neurocognitive impairments in cancer survivors, especially children. As the numbers of pediatric brain cancer survivors continue improving, the numbers of individuals developing life-long neurocognitive sequalae are consequently expected to rise. Yet, there are no established biomarkers estimating the degree of the irradiation-induced brain injury at completion of radiotherapy to predict the severity of the expected neurocognitive complications. We aimed to identify sensitive biomarkers associated with brain response to irradiation that can be measured in easily accessible clinical materials, such as liquid biopsies. METHODS: Juvenile mice were subjected to cranial irradiation with 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8 Gy. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), plasma and brains were collected at acute, subacute, and subchronic phases after irradiation, and processed for proteomic screens, molecular and histological analyses. RESULTS: We found that the levels of ectodysplasin A2 receptor (EDA2R), member of tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, increased significantly in the CSF after cranial irradiation, even at lower irradiation doses. The levels of EDA2R were increased globally in the brain acutely after irradiation and decreased over time. EDA2R was predominantly expressed by neurons, and the temporal dynamics of EDA2R in the brain was reflected in the plasma samples. CONCLUSIONS: We propose EDA2R as a promising potential biomarker reflecting irradiation-induced brain injury in liquid biopsies. The levels of EDA2R upon completion of radiotherapy may aid in predicting the severity of IR-induced neurocognitive sequalae at a very early stage after treatment.

This research proposes a highly sensitive and simple surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA using suitably designed probes specific for RdRp and N viral genes attached to a Raman marker. The sensitivity of the assay was optimized through precise adjustments to the conditions of immobilization and hybridization processes of the target RNA, including modifications to factors such as time and temperature. The assay achieved a remarkable sensitivity down to 58.39 copies/mL, comparable to or lower than the sensitivities reported for commercial fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods. It has good selectivity in discriminating SARS-CoV-2 RNA against other respiratory viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza A virus. The reliability of the assay was validated by testing 24 clinical samples, including 12 positive samples with varying cycle threshold (Ct) values and 12 negative samples previously tested using real-time PCR. The assay consistently predicted true results that were in line with the PCR results for all samples. Furthermore, the assay demonstrated a notable limit of detection (LOD) of Ct (38 for RdRp gene and 37.5 for N-gene), indicating its capability to detect low concentrations of the target analyte and potentially facilitating early detection of the pathogen.

BACKGROUND: Persistent airway inflammation is a central feature of bronchiectasis. Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX-15) controls production of endogenous lipid mediators, including lipoxins that regulate airway inflammation. Mutations at various positions in ALOX-15 gene can influence airway disease development. We investigated association between ALOX-15,c.-292 C > T gene polymorphism and bronchiectasis unrelated to cystic fibrosis in Egyptian children. Also, lipoxin A4 (LXA4) level in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was studied in relation to polymorphism genotypes and disease phenotypes determined by clinical, pulmonary functions, and radiological severity parameters. METHODS: This was an exploratory study that included 60 participants. Thirty children with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) were compared with 30 age and sex-matched controls. ALOX-15,c.-292 C > T polymorphism was genotyped using TaqMan-based Real-time PCR. LXA4 was measured in BAL using ELISA method. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between patients and controls regarding ALOX-15,c.-292 C > T polymorphism genotypes and alleles (OR = 1.75; 95% CI (0.53-5.7), P = 0.35) (OR = 1; 95% CI (0.48-2), p = 1). BAL LXA4 level was significantly lower in patients, median (IQR) of 576.9 (147.6-1510) ng/ml compared to controls, median (IQR) of 1675 (536.8-2542) (p = 0.002). Patients with severe bronchiectasis had a significantly lower LXA4 level (p < 0.001). There were significant correlations with exacerbations frequency (r=-0.54, p = 0.002) and FEV1% predicted (r = 0.64, p = 0.001). Heterozygous CT genotype carriers showed higher LXA4 levels compared to other genotypes(p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Low airway LXA4 in children with NCFB is associated with severe disease phenotype and lung function deterioration. CT genotype of ALOX-15,c.-292 C > T polymorphism might be a protective genetic factor against bronchiectasis development and/or progression due to enhanced LXA4 production.

This study is the first to report the foliar and stem epidermal micro-morphology of 13 taxa of Indigofera L. (Fabaceae) using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The micro-morphological characteristics studied here are related to the epidermal cell shape, size, frequency, anticlinal wall pattern, and stomatal complex types, size, position, frequency, and index. The study revealed 19 major normal stomatal types with eight subtypes and seven major abnormal stomatal types with 13 subtypes. The stomatal index was lower on the abaxial leaf surface than on the adaxial surface. Notably, the adaxial surface of I. hochstetteri had the highest stomatal index (27.46%), while the abaxial surface of I. oblongifolia had the lowest (9.95%). The adaxial surface of I. hochstetteri also displayed the highest average stomatal frequency (38.67), while the adaxial surface of I. spinosa had the lowest average frequency (9.37). SEM analysis revealed that most leaves had slightly sunken to sunken stomata, while stem stomata were positioned at the same level as epidermal cells in most taxa. Indigofera's foliar and stem epidermal anatomy recommends their application as baseline data coupled with other taxonomic data for the delimitation and differentiation of closely related taxa in the genus. The study provides a comprehensive description, illustrations, images, and micrographs of the stomatal types, as well as a taxonomic key for distinguishing the studied taxa of Indigofera.

Background Sepsis is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in newborns. Diagnosis of neonatal sepsis may be difficult because the clinical presentations are often nonspecific. Neonatal sepsis may have an early onset (zero to three days) or a late onset (four days or later). Onset is most rapid in premature neonates. In this study, we aimed to assess the correlation between positive cultures, high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Methodology This descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was undertaken over four months starting from December 15, 2019, to April 15, 2020, in Atbara Teaching Hospital, Sudan. Data were collected from 71 patients. CRP levels were measured, and blood cultures were performed. Results High CRP level >10 mg/L was seen in patients having positive blood culture (55.3%), mainly in preterm babies (CRP >10 mg/dL (61.1%), positive culture (55.6%)) and very low birth weight babies (CRP >10 mg/dL (83.3%) and positive culture (67%)). Conclusions Our findings suggest that Klebsiella is an important cause of neonatal sepsis. CRP was positive in babies mainly with proven sepsis. There is a high correlation between CRP and blood culture in patients with neonatal sepsis which may give access to remodeling the prioritization of the management options in the clinical setting.

Bilateral supernumerary kidneys and associated urinary stone disease are rarely seen in clinical practice, and only three cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a 15-year-old male patient having a bilateral supernumerary kidney with an obstructive left ureteric stone successfully managed with retrograde intrarenal surgery. Stones in such anomalous kidneys pose a challenge for the urologist, and imaging is essential for surgical intervention planning. RIRS with holmium laser lithotripsy is a safe and effective treatment with a high single-stage stone-free rate and low complication rate in experienced hands.

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) encompasses a spectrum of disorders involving thrombosis of the cerebral venous system. As shown by previous epidemiological studies, the prevalence of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis is 4-7 cases per million people. Nephrotic syndrome was very rarely associated with thrombosis cerebral veins or sinuses. Hypercoagulability and thrombotic complications in nephrotic syndrome are most commonly seen in deep veins of the lower extremities and renal veins. Our case highlights a unique scenario in which cerebral sinovenous thrombosis was the initial presentation of nephrotic syndrome in a patient that was not an important past medical or surgical problem. The patient was brought to the emergency department with severe headache, vomiting, altered mental status, and generalized body swelling. Laboratory results showed proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia and hyperlipidemia. Non-contrast brain CT demonstrated hemorrhagic venous infarct associated with vasogenic edema. A subsequent brain MR venogram demonstrated occlusion of superior sagittal and right transverse sinuses. She was managed with low molecular weight heparin and intervenous corticosteroids then shifted to rivaroxaban and oral steroids, respectively, which resulted in massive clinical improvement and resolution of thrombus.
