RESUMO

The poor prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer leads to the constant search for new ways of treatment of this disease. One of the methods used in high-grade dysplasia, superficial invasive carcinoma, and sometimes palliative care is photodynamic therapy (PDT). This method has come a long way from the first experimental studies to registration in the treatment of esophageal cancer and is constantly being improved and refined. This review describes esophageal cancer, current treatment methods, the introduction to PDT, the photosensitizers (PSs) used in esophageal carcinoma PDT, PDT in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus, and PDT in invasive adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. For this review, research and review articles from PubMed and Web of Science databases were used. The keywords used were "photodynamic therapy in esophageal cancer" in the years 2000-2020. The total number of papers returned was 1,000. After the review was divided into topic blocks and the searched publications were analyzed, 117 articles were selected.

Prostate cancer can significantly shorten the lifetime of a patient, even if he is diagnosed at an early stage. The development of minimally-invasive focal therapies such as photodynamic therapy to reduce the number of neoplastic cells while sparing delicate structures is extremely advantageous for treating prostate cancer. This study investigates the effect of photodynamic therapy performed in prostate tissue samples in vitro, using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and histopathological analysis. Prostate tissue samples were treated with oxygenated solutions of Rose Bengal (RB) or protoporphyrin IX disodium salt (PpIX), illuminated with visible light, and then analyzed for changes in morphology by microscopy and by measurement of spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times at 1.5 Tesla. In the treated prostate tissue samples, histopathological images revealed chromatin condensation and swelling of the stroma, and in some cases, thrombotic necrosis and swelling of the stroma accompanied by pyknotic nuclei occurred. Several samples had protein fragments in the stroma. Magnetic resonance imaging of the treated prostate tissue samples revealed differences in the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times prior to and post photodynamic action.

The alarming increase in the number of advanced-stage prostate cancer cases with poor prognosis has led to a search for innovative methods of treatment. In response to the need for implementation of new and innovative methods of cancer tissue therapy, we studied photodynamic action in excised prostate tissue in vitro as a model for photodynamic therapy. To ascertain the effects of photodynamic action in prostate tissue, Rose Bengal (0.01 to 0.05 mM) was used as a photosensitizer in the presence of oxygen and light to generate singlet oxygen in tissues in vitro. Five preset concentrations of Rose Bengal were chosen and injected into prostate tissue samples (60 samples with 12 replications for each RB concentration) that were subsequently exposed to 532 nm light. The effects of irradiation of the Rose Bengal infused tissue samples were determined by histopathological analysis. Histopathological examination of prostate samples subjected to photodynamic action revealed numerous changes in the morphology of the neoplastic cells and the surrounding tissues. We conclude that the morphological changes observed in the prostate cancer tissues were a result of the photogeneration of cytotoxic singlet oxygen. The tissue damage observed post photodynamic action offers an incentive for continued in vitro investigations and future in vivo clinical trials.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment that uses light, a photosensitizer, and oxygen to destroy tumors. This article is a review of approaches to the treatment of prostate cancer applying upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). UCNPs have become a phenomenon that are rapidly gaining recognition in medicine. They have proven to be highly selective and specific and present a powerful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is a huge health problem in Western countries. Its early detection can significantly improve patients' prognosis, but currently used diagnostic methods leave much to be desired. Recently developed methodologies regarding UCNP research between the years 2021 and 2014 for prostate cancer PDT will also be discussed. Current limitations in PDT include tissue irradiation with visible wavelengths that have a short tissue penetration depth. PDT with the objectives to synthesize UCNPs composed of a lanthanide core with a coating of adsorbed dye that will generate fluorescence after excitation with near-infrared light to illuminate deep tissue is a subject of intense research in prostate cancer.

This article is a review of approaches to treatment of low and high-grade prostate cancer including a discussion of active treatment vs. active surveillance for patients with low-grade prostate cancer. In particular, we will review PDT as an option for active treatment of low-grade prostate cancer considered in light of recent clinical trials. The mechanism and clinical methods of PDT application and the key points from clinical trials using PDT for prostate cancer with the photosensitizers m-tetrahydroxyphenyl chloride, protoporphyrin IX, motexafin lutetium, padoporfin, and padeliporfin between the years 2002 and 2017 are reviewed. Recently developed methodologies for photodynamic prostate cancer treatment that are in the experimental stage, photodynamic diagnosis, fluorescence guided resection, and PSMA-targeted PDT will also be discussed.

BACKGROUND: Meningeal melanomatosis is a rare type of central nervous system neoplasm (with incidence ranging between 3 and 5%) that develops in the course of malignant melanoma. In a small percentage of cases, meningeal melanomatosis may develop without a primary focus. It affects the leptomeninx. The clinical activity of the disease is uncharacteristic, with a number of neurological symptoms developing over weeks or months. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old male patient presented with consciousness disturbance, cognitive dysfunctions, seizures and progressive paresis. None of the examinations performed, including cerebrospinal fluid examination, neuroimaging and biopsy of the leptomeninges, permitted us to establish a diagnosis during the patient's hospital stay. The diagnosis of meningeal melanomatosis was established after an autopsy had been carried out. CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of unequivocal test results, it is also worth taking into account the primary changes in the leptomeninx, including those caused by melanoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a superficial diffuse inflammation restricted to the colon and rectum. Inflammation within the small bowel may occur several years after a pancolectomy. The pathogenesis is unknown and seems to be different from Crohn's disease or other causes of diseases of the small intestine, but an association with colectomy due to UC is very likely. METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe the case of a patient with a probable diagnosis of pan-UC accompanied by Sjögren's syndrome and partial IgA deficiency, who developed enteritis after a restorative pancolectomy. For induction and maintenance of remission, the patient was successfully treated with mycofenolate mofetil (MMF) and vedolizumab (VDZ). CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that a previously refractory to standard therapy UC-related enteritis can be treated with combination MMF and VDZ.
