[Pancreatic pseudocyst. Review of 22 cases]. / Pseudoquiste de páncreas (Revisión de 22 casos).

The management of 22 children with pseudocyst of the pancreas presenting over a 15-year period at three pediatric Hospitals is reviewed. The mean age of patients was 7 years being more common in boys (17:5). Ninety one per cent were due to trauma, while in 9% the cause was unknown. Vomiting (81.8%), abdominal pain (77.2%), a mass (72.7%), fever (31.8%) and anorexia (31.8%) were the most frequent findings. The diagnosis was confirmed by finding hyperamylasemia (elevated in 72.7% of cases), by barium meal and ultrasound. Operative treatment included external drainage in 4 children, cystgastrostomy in 9, cystjejunostomy in 6, and excision in 1. One patient was successfully managed nonoperatively and another had spontaneous gastric drainage. There were no deaths or significative complications in this series.

[The fecundity of immigrants to Argentina, the French of Tandil, 1860-1914]. / La fécondité des immigrants en Argentine, les Français de Tandil, 1860-1914.

Based on the reconstitution of families of French immigrants who settled in Tandil (Buenos Aires) during the great wave of immigration, this article examines the migrants' fertility. Legitimate births, descendants, proto and intergenesiacal intervals as well as the maternal ages at the final delivery are successively analyzed. The results are then compared with data gathered in the French regime from which the immigrants came. The application of the method perfected by Louis Henry makes possible a micro-discussion of certain hypotheses connecting the demographic transition in Argentina with the arrival of European immigrants. The article's main findings are that there was no voluntary birth control among the immigrants and the determination of their birthrate, which was midway between that existing in their native regions in France and that of the local population in Argentina.

[A critical approach to endogamy: considerations resulting from the reconstruction of French families (Tandil, 1850-1914)]. / Una vision critica de la endogamia: reflexiones a partir de una reconstruccion de familias francesas, (Tandil, 1850-1914).

"Marriage patterns of French immigrants in Tandil [Argentina] are analyzed on the basis of birth and wedding data obtained from local registers using the Louis Henry model to establish the pattern for the whole immigrant group and not restricted to legally wed couples. The study of marital choices is not fully valid unless also the continuity of practices developed at origin as well as composition of the group and patterns of arrival are taken into account. Two main conclusions are presented: the link between [endo-]/exogamic behaviour and the type of migration (individual or chain migration) and the higher exogamy in rural areas." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Alpha-human atrial natriuretic peptide is a coronary vasodilator in the Langendorff-perfused guinea pig heart.

The circulating form of atrial natriuretic peptide is now believed to be composed of 28 amino acids (1). Therefore, we studied the coronary vasoactivity of the 28 amino acid, alpha-human atrial natriuretic peptide (alpha-hANP) in five isolated guinea pig hearts Langendorff-perfused at constant pressure (46 mmHg) with Krebs-Henseleit solution. The reactivity of the coronary bed was assured in each heart with bolus injections of norepinephrine, adenosine, and the vasoconstrictor atrial natriuretic peptide, atriopeptin II (APII). APII was a coronary constrictor in each of these five hearts. Nineteen boluses of alpha-hANP were administered to the five hearts, spanning the range 1.6 to 64 nmol/g wet heart weight. alpha-hANP was vasodilator in all five hearts. The equation for the regression of y = flow, % increase, on x = dose, nmol/g, is y = 17.98 logx - 4.11. The correlation coefficient, r, is 0.83, and the coefficient of determination, r2, is 0.69. Analysis of variance of the regression of y on x yields an F statistic of 36.9, P less than 0.00001. These results indicate that coronary vasodilation is correlated with dose of alpha-hANP over much of the range 1.6-64 nmol/g.

Coronary vasoconstrictor effects of atriopeptin II.

Atrial natriuretic peptides lower arterial pressure, cardiac filling pressure, and cardiac output. In isolated, Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts, atriopeptin II, the 23-amino acid atrial natriuretic peptide, is also a potent coronary vasoconstrictor. The median effective dose for atriopeptin II in guinea pig hearts is 26 nanomoles, the threshold constrictor dose is 5 nanomoles, and flow nearly ceases at a dose of 100 nanomoles in perfused hearts at constant pressure. Similar concentrations of atriopeptin II also cause coronary vasoconstriction in rat and dog heart preparations. The disulfide bridge is necessary for vasoconstrictor activity; reduction of this bridge abolishes the activity, as it does the other biological activities of atrial natriuretic peptides.

The influence of consanguinity on fertility and infant mortality in Sanabria (Zamora, Spain).

"The effects of consanguinity on fertility and infant mortality are studied in the population of the Sanabria Valley (Zamora province, Spain). The sample is made up of 965 complete families, 100 couples being first cousins (FC), 172 second cousins (SC) and 693 non-related (NR). There appears little difference in the fertility of consanguineous and unrelated couples but infant mortality rates (endogenous and exogenous) are higher among the offspring of consanguineous couples."

Role of sympathetic excitation in generating arrhythmias in early and late phases of ectopic responses after coronary arterial occlusion in dog heart.

The three phases of arrhythmias that develop within specific durations of occlusion of a coronary artery of the dog have been reviewed and characterized. The intravenous administration of practolol as described has virtually prevented the occurrence of arrhythmic activity during the first 7-8 hr after occlusion and kept the frequency at a much reduced level as compared with controls through 10 or 11 hr, but not appreciably longer. This means that first and second phase arrhythmias were almost abolished, and development of third phase ventricular tachycardia was significantly retarded, but not prevented. It is concluded that sympathetic stimulation is an important component in the effective excitation of ectopic activity during the first and second phases, but contributed no more than a minor component to the fully developed third phase activity.
