Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly used for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, it is unknown whether photodynamic therapy is more effective than other commonly used treatment modalities for these cancers. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the relative efficacy and safety of PDT compared with placebo or other interventions for the treatment of skin carcinomas. Methods: Searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. We included randomized controlled trials comparing the PDT with other interventions in adults skin BCC or SCC that reported on lesion response, recurrence, cosmetic appearance, or safety outcomes. Results: Seventeen unique randomized controlled trials, representing 22 study arms from 21 publications were included. The included trials included 2,166 participants, comparing methyl aminolevulinic (MAL) PDT (six studies) or aminolevulinic acid (ALA) PDT (two studies). Comparators included placebo, surgery, hexaminolevulinic (HAL) PDT, erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet ablative factional laser (YAG-AFL) PDT, fluorouracil, and imiquimod. There were few studies available for each comparison. Mantel-Haenszel fixed effects risk ratios were calculated for response, recurrence, cosmetic outcomes, and adverse events. MAL-PDT had similar response rates to surgery, ALA-PDT, fluorouracil and imiquimod at 3- and 12 months post-intervention. The rate of recurrence was similar, showing few differences at 12 months, but at later time points (24-60 months), fewer lesions recurred with surgery and imiquimod than with PDT. PDT also caused more adverse events and pain than other interventions. However, PDT treatment was more likely to receive a "good" or "excellent" rating for cosmetic appearance than surgery or cryotherapy. Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrates that the choice of treatment modality for BCC or SCC is best chosen in the context of the location and size of the lesion, the socioeconomic circumstances of the patient, as well as the patient's preferences. We call for more high quality studies to be done, in order to enable more reliable interpretations of the data. RATIONALE: In this article, we report interesting clinical manifestation of spontaneous bilateral fallopian tube pregnancies in a patient with a didelphic uterus. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 26-year-old female patient, gravida 2, para 0 + 1, suffered from progressive abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. A laboratory exam revealed a human chorionic gonadotropin level of 1091 IU/L. Transvaginal ultrasound detected no embryo sacs in the uterus but revealed a didelphic uterus, and a mass measuring 39 mm x 32 mm in the left adnexa region with another mass measuring 42 x 28 mm in the right adnexa region. DIAGNOSES: An ectopic pregnancy in the left adnexa region and a corpus hemorrhagicum in the right adnexa region were suspected. INTERVENTIONS: Laparoscopic exploration operation confirmed a didelphic uterus, and pathological biopsy revealed bilateral fallopian tube pregnancies. OUTCOMES: The patient made a good recovery and the human chorionic gonadotropin became normal within the following 2 months. LESSONS: To the best of our knowledge, clinical manifestation of spontaneous bilateral fallopian tube pregnancies in a patient with a didelphic uterus has never been reported before. Based on the experience with this case, we suggest that if a gestational sac is found in 1 fallopian tube, the contralateral fallopian tube needs to be examined for an ectopic pregnancy during surgery.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by the loss of peripheral vision, high pressure in the eye, optic nerve damage, and the loss of peripheral vision due to loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). A number of miRNA have been detected in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. The paper was to focus on the miR-223 in RGCs apoptosis and inflammation, and investigated the possible mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After miR-223 inhibitor and mimics transfected into RGCs, the expression of miR-223 was detected by QRT-PCR, cell proliferation were performed by CCK-8 and EdU assays, cell apoptosis were measured by flow cytometer and TUNEL assays, apoptosis and inflammation -related proteins were detected by western blot, and whether miR-223 target to HSP-70 was detected by Luciferease reporter assay. Moreover, the effects si-HSP-70 on RGCs or RGCs transfected with miR-223 inhibitor were detected. In vivo study. New Zealand White rabbits (20 females) were used to detect the effect of miR-223 on the rabbit glaucoma model induced by injection of carbomer. RESULTS: CCK-8 and EdU assays demonstrated that miR-223 mimics decreased RGCs proliferation. FITC-Annexin V/PI Apoptosis and TUNEL assays showed that miR-223 mimics induced RGCs apoptosis. Western blot revealed that miR-223 mimics enhanced the expression of relative apoptosis and inflammation factors. Further, we demonstrated that miR-223 could inhibit cell proliferation, induce cell apoptosis as well as inflammation by targeting HSP-70 in RGCs. Moreover, the results were confirmed in rabbit glaucoma model. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, miR-223 plays a vital role in RGCs by regulating HSP-70 expression, and the new therapeutic strategy might potentially contribute to benefit glaucoma treatment.

A novel method for the rapid and sensitive analysis of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) in human urine has been developed that uses a resonance light scattering (RLS) technique. The assay was based on the interaction of ethyl violet (EV) with 1-hydroxypyrene to form an ion-associate complex, which resulted in the enhancement of RLS intensity and the appearance of new RLS spectra. In the presence of anionic surfactant, the maximum RLS peak of the system was located at 396 nm at pH 8.0. Under the optimum conditions, it was found that the enhanced RLS intensity was directly proportional to the concentration of 1-hydroxypyrene in the range of 4.0 - 982 microg l(-1). The detection limit was 1.2 microg l(-1) and the recoveries of 1-hydroxypyrene were 92.8 - 102.3% (n = 6). The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of human urine samples. The results of 1-hydroxypyrene were in agreement with those obtained by the method of high-performance liquid chromatography.
