BACKGROUND: The work environment is considered an important factor for the success of any healthcare organization that keeps upstanding and can compete with others to achieve the organization and employee's goals. This study aims to examine the effect of the workplace environment on the structural empowerment of registered nurses in governmental hospitals. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive survey study. The sample consisted of 405 nurses from three Jordanian governmental hospitals. Data were collected using an online self-reported questionnaire that was distributed to the participants. The questionnaire included sections on demographic characteristics, the structural empowerment scale, and the work environment scale. Data collection took place between 1 January 2023 and 15 February 2023. RESULTS: The participants demonstrated various levels in their perceptions of the working environment. They demonstrated a moderate perception level toward stress and work pressure, role clarity, peer cohesive subscale, and for working environment scale while they reported a low perception level on ethical, autonomy, work practices, managerial support, commitment, and social responsibility subscales. However, the nurses' work environment overall score was found to be at a moderate level (3.15 out of 5 ± 0.61). Furthermore, their structural empowerment level was found to be at a moderate level (19.40 out of 30 ± 3.68). CONCLUSIONS: Highly empowered nurses' work environments display higher structural empowerment. Applying structural empowerment in work environments is very important to improve nurses' performance, ensure the highest level of patient care quality, and achieve organizational goals.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between leadership styles of nurse managers, nurses' motivation, and turnover intentions among Jordanian nurses. Design: A descriptive correlational cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted. Methods: A convenience sampling technique was utilized to select the required .sample A sample of 170 registered nurses working at private hospitals in Jordan was surveyed. Moreover, a questionnaire of Path-Goal Leadership, Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale, and Turnover Intention Scale was used to assess leadership styles of nurse managers, nurses' motivation and turnover intention among the participants. Descriptive and inferential tests were used to ask the research questions. Results: The participants perceived the supportive leadership style as the highest (M = 24.4, SD = 4.66). The mean work motivation among participants was 87.12, and the mean turnover intention was 22.01. Nurses' motivation has a positive correlation with all leadership styles. Years of experience predict the nurses' work motivation. Among the leadership styles; two of them significantly predict nurses' work motivation (supportive style) p < 0.001, and (achievement-oriented style) p < 0.001. Finally, the highest correlation coefficient was noticed between work motivation and achievement-oriented style (r = 0.46, p < 0.001) by moderate positive correlation, and the lowest correlation coefficient was between work motivation and directive style (r = 0.29, p < 0.001), whereas the results revealed that turnover intention was not significantly correlated with any of the leadership styles. Conclusion: The results present a unique theoretical underpinning that highlights the factors that affect nurses' turnover intention. So, these findings could be used as guide for policy makers to establish organizational policies toward satisfying nurses' motivation and quality of life to enhance their retention. Besides, enriching the factors that may enhance nurses' motivation and reduce their turnover intention.

Electronic health records (EHRs) have proven their effectiveness during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. However, successful implementation of EHRs requires assessing nurses' attitudes as they are considered the first line in providing direct care for patients. This study assessed Jordanian nurses' attitudes and examined factors that affect nurses' attitudes toward using EHRs. A cross-sectional, correlational design was used. A convenient sample of 130 nurses was recruited from three major public hospitals in Jordan. All Participants completed the Nurses' attitudes Towards Computerization (NATC) Questionnaire. The overall nurses' attitude was positive; the mean was 61.85 (SD = 10.97). Findings revealed no significant relationship between nurses' attitudes toward using EHRs and nurses' age, gender, education level, previous computer skills experience, years of work experience, and years of dealing with EHRs. However, the work unit was found to have a significant correlation with nurses' attitudes toward using EHRs. Therefore, nurse administrators should arrange for the conduct of educational workshops and continuous training programs considering the needs of the nurses.

BACKGROUND: Shared governance is a structural framework for operationalizing nursing ownership and accountability for nursing practice. Healthcare institutions are striving to promote healthy and satisfactory work conditions to retain their qualified personnel and achieve organizational stability and high care quality. However, little is known about nurses' participation in governance in developing countries. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the levels of shared governance, also known as professional governance, among nurses in Jordan. The demographics of the study participants will also be assessed. METHODS: The current study used a cross-sectional design implementing an anonymous online survey technique to collect data from 111 nurses on the Index of Professional Nursing Governance (IPNG). Descriptive statistics were performed to evaluate the nurses' perception of the concept of shared governance in the domains of personnel, information, resources, participation goals and conflict resolution, and practice. RESULTS: Among the 111 nurses, 55% of the participants were females, 45.5% were affiliated with governmental hospitals, and about half of them worked in critical care units. The analysis showed that the mean score for the total IPNG was 113 (SD = 26.28). The analyses of the mean scores of IPNG domains ranged from 11.5 (SD = 4.6) for goals and conflict resolution to 23.8 (SD = 5.7) for access to information. DISCUSSION: The results revealed that nurses' average perception of professional governance demonstrated shared governance, and more specifically, in the lower level of shared governance where decisions are made primarily by management with some staff input. Analysis of the domains of governance revealed that participants' scores corresponded with shared governance in the areas of information, resources, goals and conflict, and practice, while traditional governance was prevalent in the governance of nursing personnel and participation. CONCLUSION: There is an agreement on the need of moving the position of frontline nurses to the center of their organizations where equity, accountability, and ownership are the pillars of participative governance. Frontline nurses need further empowerment to be more actively engaged especially in the management of nursing staff and related structures and in the participation in structures connected to governance activities at different organizational levels such as in committees.
