RESUMO

Nineteen cases of keratosis punctata of the palmar creases are presented. This entity, currently regarded as a variant of keratosis punctata of the palms and soles, is seen almost exclusively in blacks. It is benign, mostly asymptomatic, and sometimes familial without any sex predilection. The clinical lesions are pits and keratotic papules confined to the creases of the palms and volar surfaces of the fingers. The soles are rarely affected but a new finding reported here is the involvement of the side of feet in eight of the nineteen cases.

RESUMO

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) may be difficult to differentiate clinically from psoriasis. We report four cases of ILVEN that confirm the observation that the analysis of epidermal proteins by sodium lauryl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SLS-PAGE) discloses a pattern different from that seen in psoriasis. We have also found, however, that the SLS-PAGE epidermal protein pattern is not identical in each case of ILVEN.

RESUMO

A method is described which estimates (using least-squares analysis) all parameters (kinetic parameters and also zero and infinite time assays) from nonisothermal kinetic data. This method overcomes the time delays required for infinite time assays and biased estimates caused by the use of those assay results. Flexible temperature and data collection programs can be used. The mathematical models account for thermal volume expansion and the appropriate model is selected by statistical tests (provided the reaction is studied over approximately 90% decomposition). The models use a reparameterized Arrhenius equation in which the frequency factor is replaced by ka, the rate constant at a specified temperature. This improves the numerical procedure and allows room temperature stability to be estimated directly.

RESUMO

The kinetics and mechanism of hydrolysis of the cytotoxic drug chlorambucil were investigated. A study of the reaction order and of the pH, dielectric constant, and ionic strength effects on the reaction rate revealed that the hydrolysis was a limiting unimolecular nucleophilic substitution, the rate-determining step being the ionization of the first 2-chloroethylamine chlorine. The hydrolysis rate was markedly dependent on the protonation degree of the chlorambucil basic group. indicating that a cyclic ethyleneimmonium ion may be involved in the rate-determining step.

RESUMO

Disseminate and recurrent infundibulofolliculitis is an uncommon pruitic papular follicular eruption that affects the trunk and proximal extremities and occurs almost exclusively in blacks. Little is known about the cause, and treatment has been totally unsuccessful. Extensive laboratory investigations, including histology and direct immunofluorescence in four cases, were unrevealing. Oral vitamin A therapy was effective in controlling five of six cases. We consider this disease to be a specific clinical and pathologic response to an, as yet, unknown cause or causes.

RESUMO

The cases of epithelioma cuniculatum in this report illustrate the unusual appearance and diagnostic difficulty of the lesion. Early diagnosis resulted in apparent cure with adequate local excision in some cases, whereas amputation was necessary for advanced or recurrent tumors. Distant metastasis may occur. Superficial biopsy specimens may yield inadequate tissue for proper diagnosis. Verrucous carcinoma should be considered as a diagnostic possibility in any atypical or recurrent "wart" on the sole.

RESUMO

Potentiation of the sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim combination by ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid inhibited, in vitro, four strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which were resistant to the sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim combination alone.
