RESUMO

Objective: A versatile and comprehensive approach is required for the treatment of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), which is characterized by multiple physical and psychological symptoms. Highlighting the psychopathology of FMS, might enable us choosing more suitable treatments. From these perspective, we planned to search the cha-racter strength and somepersonality traitsas Forgivingness, Patience, Positivity and Mental Well-Being, which are not searched before in FMS patients. Method: Female patients with widespread musculoskeletal pain meeting the ACR 2010 Fibromyalgia criteria and age- and sex-matched control group were included to the study. All participants were asked to complete a semistructured sociodemographic and clinical data form. The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR) was filled. Trait Forgivingness Scale (TFS), 3-Factor Patience scale, Positivity scale and Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) were performed. Results: A total of 50 female patients with FMS and 36 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were evaluated. The scores of WEMWBSand Positivity Scale were significantly low in FMSgroup (p<001, p<0.001). There were no statistically significant difference in TFSand 3-FPSscores (p=0.751,p=0.364, respectively) (Table 2). There were no statistically significant correlation between parameters in FMS group. Conclusion: The study provides useful insights into the domains of some personality traits of FMS patients. Altough positivity and mental well being were found significantly low, there were no difference in patience and forgivingness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Observing others facial expressions to pain effects person's own facial expression empathetically. Fibromyalgia (FM) patients can be more sensitive to negative moods. We hypothesize that fibromyalgia patient recognize negative emotions more than positive emotions. METHOD: . Thirty one patients who met the classification criteria of FM according to American College of Rheumatology 1990 were included to the study. Age and sex matched 24 healthy woman included as a control group. All of the participants full filled the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). All of them evaluated with Facial Emotion Recognition Test. RESULTS: The mean age was not significantly different between fibromyalgia and healthy controls (46.04±10.78 vs 41.43±11.64, re-spectively and p=0.137). There were no significant differences among occupational status (p=0.347) and education (p=0.946) between groups. The mean scores according to Beck Depression Scale (16.56±9.81 vs 14.89±8.22) and Beck Anxiety Scale (21.32±13.94 vs 18.36±16.18) were significantly higher in patients with FM than healthy controls (p>0.05, for both). Patients with FM had significantly lesser rate of recognizing sad facial emotions (p=0.012). The patients with FM needed more time while recognizing happy (p=0.017), surprised (p= 0.043), neutral (p<0.001) and angry facial emotions (p=0.003). CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence of impairment in sad facial emotions and more response time for happy, angry, neutral and surprised facial emotions. These may cause poor interpersonal relationship and insuf-ficient social functioning and leading to chronicity of the disease.

RESUMO

The spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is the major motor supply to the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles. The superficial course of the SAN in the posterior cervical triangle makes it vulnerable to injuries. The most common reason is an iatrogenic injury during surgery but other causes such as stretch or traction injury have also been reported. Five iatrogenic SAN injuries were occurred after radical neck dissection (RND) for laryngeal carcinoma in two patients, lymphadenectomy for oral mucosal tumor in one patient, surgery for lipoma in one patient, and lymph node biopsy for tuberculosis in one patient, traumatic SAN injuries were occurred after the carrying and lifting in three patients. Our eight patients were followed conservatively and 6 of them had significant improvement of pain and function of the shoulder. However, the remaining two patients with radical neck dissection showed moderate improvement in both pain and function including shoulder range of motion and activities of daily living. We report the eight cases with SAN injury that had admitted to our outpatient clinic in the last one year with neck, back and shoulder pain as well as limitation in the shoulder range of motion and difficulty in the activities of daily living.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine the technical quality of root fillings as well as the periapical status of root filled teeth and non-root filled teeth in young permanent dentitions using a retrospective analysis of orthopantomographs (OPTGs) in a Turkish subpopulation. METHODOLOGY: Included in this study were the digital OPTGs taken as a part of diagnostic and planning procedures for all 19-year-old adolescents who attended the Faculty of Dentistry, Marmara University (Istanbul, Turkey) for the first time during the period from June 2007 to May 2009. The periapical status of all teeth and the technical quality of the root fillings were assessed by radiographic criteria. Statistical analysis was performed by the Mann-Whitney U, chi-squared, Fisher's exact and Cohen's kappa tests. RESULTS: The survey involved OPTGs of 1077 19-year-old adolescents: 663 (61.6%) women and 414 (38.4%) men. Of the 28974 teeth examined, 459 (1.6%) were root filled, of which 193 (42.0%) had radiological signs of apical periodontitis (AP), and 454 (1.6%) were non-root filled teeth with AP. No significant difference was found between women and men regarding the number of teeth present, the number of root filled teeth and the number of non-root filled teeth with AP (P>0.05). The most commonly treated teeth were molars (54.2%), followed by pre-molars (27.0%) and incisors (18.8%). Length was adequate in 57.3%, and homogeneity was adequate in 50.5% of the root fillings. Statistically, both the length and the homogeneity of the root fillings were significantly associated with periapical status individually (P<0.01). The overall technical quality was inadequate in 60.1% of the root fillings, and 67.0% of these were associated with signs of AP. Amongst root filled teeth, the frequency of AP in connection with molars was significantly higher (57.0%) than that for incisors (27.9%) and pre-molars (21.8%) (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicated that the frequency of root filled teeth with AP, non-root filled teeth with AP and of technically inadequate root fillings amongst all root filled teeth was high in this selected adolescent Turkish population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is considered a syndrome with an unknown cause. Roles of various trace elements and cytokines in saliva have been implicated in the development of BMS. The aim of the present study was to compare the levels of salivary trace elements [magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu)] and interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-6, and to search for a correlation between depression/anxiety and salivary trace elements and cytokines in BMS patients and controls. METHODS: Thirty patients with BMS and 30 matched healthy controls participated in the study. Unstimulated saliva was collected from participants and salivary flow rates were determined. Mg, Zn and Cu levels were determined by atomic absorbance spectrophotometry. Cytokine immunoassay kits were used to determine the concentration of IL-2 and IL-6 in the whole saliva samples. Anxiety and depression were analyzed by means of the Speilberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (SAI-TAI) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. RESULTS: Although subjects in the control group had significantly higher mean levels for Mg compared with BMS patients (P < 0.01), no statistically significant differences were observed in relation to Zn and Cu levels between the two groups (P < 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in IL-2 and IL-6 levels of BMS and control groups, but subjects in BMS group had slightly, not significantly, higher mean levels for IL-6 compared with controls. Subjects in BMS group had significantly higher mean values for TAI compared with controls (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in relation to salivary levels of Mg, Zn, Cu, IL-2, IL-6 and depression/anxiety between BMS and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study indicate that Mg levels could have an impact on symptoms of BMS and further studies are necessary to determine the importance of cytokines in the pathogenesis of BMS.

RESUMO

Peripheral ameloblastoma, a rare and unusual variant of odontogenic tumour, comprises about 1% of all ameloblastomas. The extraosseous location is the peculiar feature of this type of tumour, which is otherwise similar to the classical ameloblastoma. An additional case of this infrequent tumour is described on the lingual alveolar mucosa of the right mandibular premolar region in a 60-year-old man. Clinical evidence, microscopic findings, CT imaging and recurrence for this tumour are discussed.

RESUMO

A 14-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with a problem of a painless slow growing lesion for approximately three years. MR imaging findings of lesion was "retention cyst of the salivary gland". Controversially, the histological examination of the total excised specimen was "neurinoma" and that was inconsistent with MR findings. Neural tissue tumors of the oral cavity are rare, however, this diagnosis was confirmed by surgical excision and histopathological examination. There was a rare location of the lesion as well.

RESUMO

The dental, clinical, genetic, radiological and dermatoglyphic findings in patients from a large kindred with congenital hypodontia of maxillary lateral incisors (CHMLI) in association with coloboma of the iris (Cl) and hypomaturation type of amelogenesis imperfecta (HTAI) are presented. The pedigree of the kindred showing multiple consanguinaeous marriages and the findings of the family members with CHMLI and a family member with CHMLI, Cl and HTAI and two members with both CHMLI and HTAI suggested that the isolated CHMLI was due to an autosomal recessive gene, but, the Cl was determined by an autosomal dominant gene linked to CHMLI gene. HTAI was an autosomal recessive character linked to both CHMLI and Cl.

RESUMO

Recurrent oral ulcer (ROU) is a common disease whose the etiologic factors have not yet been identified. Although the autoimmune mechanism due to streptococcal antigens may be involved in this disease, serum immunoglobulins are reported to be higher than normal controls in various phases of ROU. Oral ulcers are one of the criteria in the diagnosis of some systemic diseases such as Wegener's granulomatosis, Behçet's syndrome, suppurative arthritis, Reiter's syndrome and neutropenias. Any patient with recurring oral ulcers should be evaluated medically for the possible presence or future development of serious systemic diseases. In this study of the 58% of the ROU patients who had positive ASO values, only one female patient had a moderate increase: ++ASO(= 400 IU), the rest had a slight increase: +ASO(= 200 IU). In the control group only 3 female subjects had +ASO (= 200 IU). The aim of this study was to determine whether there is any relationship between ROU and rheumatoid arthritis. Patients with ROU were examined for antistreptolysin O, rheumatoid factor and C-reactive protein and compared to healthy controls.
