RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Maxillomandibular fixation is required in nearly all cases of facial fractures which can be achieved by conventional dental wiring techniques or newer methods using transalveolar screws. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective randomized clinical study divided into two groups with thirty adult patients each with mandibular fractures was undertaken comparing the Maxillomandibular fixation technique using transalveolar screws and Erichs arch bar. Total time taken, rate of glove perforation, intraoperative and postoperative complications were noted in both the groups. RESULTS: The time taken for maxillomandibular fixation in minutes and rate of glove perforation was found to be statistically significantly less for transalveolar group compared to arch bar group (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference found in the oral hygiene and gingival status using the Glass index and Gingival index. The rate of screw breakage (04.67%), wire breakage (05.12%), non-vitality due to iatrogenic dental damage (01.66%), soft tissue injury and tooth loss were some of the noted complications during the study. CONCLUSION: We found that transalveolar group offered advantages like less time taken with a definite decreased risk of percutaneous injury, while the iatrogenic complications like dental damage can be reduced by taking adequate precautions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and uniqueness of different lip print patterns, fingerprint patterns in relation to gender and ABO Rh blood groups among a semi-urban population of Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 1200 healthy volunteers aged 18-30 years. The cheiloscopic and dermatographic data of each subject were obtained and were analysed according to the Suzuki and Tsuchihashi and Henry systems of classification, respectively. Two forensic experts analyzed the patterns independently. The ABO Rh blood group was also recorded for each subject. The Chi square statistical analysis was done and tests were considered significant when p value <0.001 and Cohen kappa test was applied to analyze inter-observer reliability. RESULTS: The B+ blood group was noted as most common in both genders while least common were A- among males and AB- in females. Type II lip pattern was most predominant while the least common was Type I' in males and Type I' and Type V in females. The UL fingerprint pattern was the most common, while RL was least noted in both genders. All the fingerprint patterns showed correlation with different lip print patterns. A correlation was found between different blood groups and lip print patterns except Type I (vertical) lip pattern. A positive correlation was observed between all the blood groups and fingerprint patterns, except for RL pattern. CONCLUSION: There is an association between lip print patterns, fingerprint patterns and ABO blood groups in both the genders. Thus, correlating the uniqueness of these physical evidences sometimes helps the forensic team members in accurate personal identification or it can at least narrow the search for an individual where there are no possible data referring to the identity of the subject.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine awareness of biomedical waste (BMW) management policies and practices among dental professionals and auxiliary staff in a dental hospital/clinics in Amritsar, India, to inform the development of future policies for effective implementation of BMW rules. METHOD: The study involved 160 staff members at the Amritsar hospital/clinics (80 dentists and 80 auxiliary staff) to whom a questionnaire was distributed regarding policies, practices and awareness relating to BMW. The questionnaire was first piloted. Completed questionnaires were returned anonymously. The resulting data were statistically tested using the chi-square test for differences between the dentists and auxiliary staff. RESULTS: In respect of BMW management policies, there was a highly significant difference in the responses of the dentists, whose answers suggested far greater knowledge than that of the auxiliaries (P<0.001). Regarding BMW management practices, the dentists were significantly more aware (P<0.001) of the method of waste collection in the hospital and the disposal of various items into different colour-coded bags. As for employee education/awareness, there was a significant difference (P<0.05) between the dentists and the auxiliaries on the question regarding records of BMW maintained in the hospital and the other responses to questions on these topics had a highly significant (P<0.001) difference between the two groups in favour of the dentists. CONCLUSION: The results of this study have demonstrated a lack of awareness of most aspects of BMW management among dental auxiliary staff in the dental hospital/clinics in Amritsar and a lack of awareness of some aspects among dentists who work in the hospital/clinics. The results provide the hospital authorities with data upon which they can develop a strategy for improving BMW management.
