RESUMO

A statistical analysis of the corona-virus (Covid-19) infective process has been performed by a cooperative action during the period February-June 2020. A good analysis has been obtained by using an entropic model typical of phenomena where statistical entropy-negaentropy balance is expected to play a major role. A saturation value of the infected humans was observed, and the number of people potentially (asymptomatic) involved in the process was determined with an accuracy of 15% in the Italian case, as relevant example. The saturation value represents about 16% of the total (symptomatic + asymptomatic) involved population in the process. The stability of the observed saturation level with the time shows that the governmental lockdown prescriptions, guided by scientists (virologists) have been effective to contain the diffusion of the virus and the associated human mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study compares the clinical and nutritional outcomes of 100 morbidly obese patients who underwent biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) with common (CC) and alimentary channel (AC) length, respectively, 50/250 and 80/200 cm. METHODS: One hundred patients who received BPD from October 2006 to November 2011 were identified from a database of bariatric procedures performed at the University Hospital of Messina, and the outcomes in terms of weight loss and morbidity were compared. Forty morbidly obese patients underwent BPD with CC 80 cm and AC 200 cm (group 1) and 60 morbidly obese patients underwent BPD with CC 50 cm and AC 250 cm (group 2). RESULTS: A gradual weight loss was observed in both groups during the first 3 years after the operation without any significant difference between the two groups. Two cases of protein malnutrition occurred in the group 2 (3 %) due to poor patient compliance in terms of adequate dietary protein intake. Sideropenic anemia was found in 42 % of obese patients in group 2 versus 22.5 % in group 1 at third-year follow-up despite adequate supplementation (p = 0.047). Diarrhea occurred more frequently with a shorter CC. Lipophilic vitamin deficiencies occurred more frequently with a shorter CC despite adequate oral supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: In the medium term, our series showed that shorter CC was associated with no weight loss advantage but with higher morbidity rate, especially in young and fertile women. We recommend a longer CC (80 cm) to be performed especially in this sub-population of obese patients.

RESUMO

Despite the high impact of mental disorders in society, European mental health research is at a critical situation with a relatively low level of funding, and few advances been achieved during the last decade. The development of coordinated research policies and integrated research networks in mental health is lagging behind other disciplines in Europe, resulting in lower degree of cooperation and scientific impact. To reduce more efficiently the burden of mental disorders in Europe, a concerted new research agenda is necessary. The ROAMER (Roadmap for Mental Health Research in Europe) project, funded under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme, aims to develop a comprehensive and integrated mental health research agenda within the perspective of the European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 programme, with a translational goal, covering basic, clinical and public health research. ROAMER covers six major domains: infrastructures and capacity building, biomedicine, psychological research and treatments, social and economic issues, public health and well-being. Within each of them, state-of-the-art and strength, weakness and gap analyses were conducted before building consensus on future research priorities. The process is inclusive and participatory, incorporating a wide diversity of European expert researchers as well as the views of service users, carers, professionals and policy and funding institutions.
