RESUMO

The present study aims to assess soil quality and potential health risks associated with soil pollution of the Batala region of Punjab, India. Physico-chemical parameters such as pH (6.69-7.43), electrical conductivity (0.17-0.33 mS/cm), and total organic carbon (1.01-5.94%) were observed to be within permissible limits. The maximum mean content (mg/kg) of heavy metals in soil was found as Fe (4060.93), Zn (444.33), Mn (278.5), Pb (23.16), Cu (21.78), Ni (20.16), Co (7.14), and Cd (1.85) which were below the prescribed limits but beyond the geochemical background limits of world soil. For rice grain samples, metal content (mg/kg) was seen as Fe (307.01) > Zn (12.41) > Mn (7.43) > Cu (4.57) and was below the permissible limits. The mean bioaccumulation factor for various metals was in the order as Zn > Cu > Fe > Mn. Single and integrated soil pollution indices revealed that among 18 sites, six were highly contaminated. The ecological risk index (Er) has shown that contamination of soil with Cd, Zn, and Ni was higher than that of other metals studied. The estimated daily intake of metal (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) were higher for children than those for adults. Spatial variability based on metal pollution load and soil quality was also determined using cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA). During CA, soil samples from 18 sites formed three statistically significant clusters based on the level of metal pollution at the specific site. PCA showed that all variables were reduced into two main components 1 and 2 with eigenvalues as 3.82 (47% variance) and 1.53 (19.7% variance), respectively.

RESUMO

DPM (diesel particulate matter) is ubiquitously present in the mining environment and is known for mutagenicity and carcinogenicity to humans. However, its health effects in surface coal mines are not well studied, particularly in India. In this study, DPM exposure and corresponding exposure biomarkers were investigated in four different surface coal mines in Central India. To document and evaluate the DPM exposure in surface coal miners, we characterized 1-NP (1-nitropyrene) in the mining environment as surrogate for DPM using Sioutas Cascade Impactor. Exposure biomarkers were analyzed by collecting post work shift (8-h work shift) urine samples and determining the concentrations of 1-aminopyrene (1-AP) as a metabolite of 1-NP and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8OHdG) as DNA damage marker. We observed high concentration of 1-NP (7.13-52.46 ng/m3) in all the mines compared with the earlier reported values. The average creatinine corrected 1-AP and 8OHdG levels ranged 0.07-0.43 [Formula: see text]g/g and 32.47-64.16 [Formula: see text]g/g, respectively, in different mines. We found 1-AP in majority of the mine workers' urine (55.53%) and its level was higher than that reported for general environmental exposure in earlier studies. Thus, the study finding indicates occupational exposure to DPM in all the four mines. However, the association between 1-NP level and exposure biomarkers (1-AP and 8OHdG) was inconsistent, which may be due to individual physiological variations. The data on exposure levels in this study will help to understand the epidemiological risk assessment of DPM in surface coal miners. Further biomonitoring and cohort study are needed to exactly quantify the occupational health impacts caused by DPM among coal miners.

RESUMO

Diverse genotoxic agents, entering the aquatic environment through natural and anthropogenic events, pose serious threats to its biotic components. The present study involves the monitoring of water quality by assessing the genotoxic effects and physico-chemical parameters including heavy metals of 10 surface water samples collected from different locations of Buddha Nullah, a tributary of Sutlej flowing through Ludhiana, Punjab (India). Genotoxicity was evaluated following Allium cepa root chromosomal aberration assay and DNA nicking assay using plasmid (pBR322) whilst the metal (cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) analysis was conducted using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. All water samples collected from the study area had cobalt and lead content more than the permissible limits (0.04 and 0.01, respectively) recommended by the Bureau of Indian Standards and the World Health Organization. The samples also induced genotoxicity following both bioassays. The water samples collected from Gaunspur (GP), a site approx. 75.53 km upstream of the Sutlej-Buddha Nullah joining point, has shown the maximum genotoxic effect, i.e. 38.62% in terms of per cent total aberrant cells during A. cepa assay and 100% DNA damage during DNA nicking assay. The Pearson correlation indicated that genotoxicity had a significant positive correlation with the content of cobalt (at p ≤ 0.5). During cluster analysis, the samples from 10 sites formed four statistically significant clusters based on the level of pollution that was dependent on two factors like similarity in physico-chemical characteristics and source of pollution at a specific site.

RESUMO

The present study was planned to explore the bioaccumulation potential of 23 plant species via bioaccumulation factor (BAf), metal accumulation index (MAI), translocation potential (Tf), and comprehensive bioconcentration index (CBCI) for seven heavy metals (cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc). The studied plants, in the vicinity of ponds at Sahlon: site 1, Chahal Khurd: site 2, and Karnana: site 3 in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Punjab (India), were Ageratum conyzoides (L.) L., Amaranthus spinosus L., Amaranthus viridis L., Brassica napus L., Cannabis sativa L., Dalbergia sissoo DC., Duranta repens L., Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants, Ficus infectoria Roxb., Ficus palmata Forssk., Ficus religiosa L., Ipomoea carnea Jacq., Medicago polymorpha L., Melia azedarach L., Morus indica L., Malva rotundifolia L., Panicum virgatum L., Parthenium hysterophorus L., Dolichos lablab L., Ricinus communis L., Rumex dentatus L., Senna occidentalis (L.) Link, and Solanum nigrum L. BAf and Tf values showed high inter-site deviations for studied metals. MAI values were found to be more substantial in shoots as compared with that of roots of plants. Maximum CBCI values were observed for M. azedarach (0.626), M. indica (0.572), D. sissoo (0.497), and R. communis (0.474) for site 1; F. infectoria (0.629), R. communis (0.541), D. sissoo (0.483), F. palmata (0.457), and D. repens (0.448) for site 2; D. sissoo (0.681), F. religiosa (0.447), and R. communis (0.429) for site 3. Although, high bioaccumulation of individual metals was observed in herbs like C. sativa, M. polymorpha, and Amaranthus spp., cumulatively, trees were found to be the better bioaccumulators of heavy metals.

RESUMO

Polymerized apple pomace (PoAP) surface was evaluated as adsorbent for the removal of Pb+2, Cd+2, and Ni+2 ions from aqueous solution. PoAP was characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDS, XRD, and BET surface area analyzer. Furthermore, the adsorption influencing parameters such as dose, pH, time, concentration, and temperature were optimized for maximum removal of metal ions from aqueous solution. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of PoAP was found to be 106, 34.12, and 19.45 mg g-1, for Pb+2, Cd+2, and Ni+2 ions respectively, using the Langmuir isotherm model. The rate of adsorption was evaluated using pseudo-second order kinetics and intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption data followed pseudo-second order kinetic with the correlation coefficient (r 2) from 0.99-1 at all concentration. Thermodynamic study revealed endothermic nature of Pb+2 and Cd+2 adsorption and exothermic for Ni+2 ions. The rate of adsorption for binary and tertiary mixtures of Pb+2, Ni+2, and Cd+2 metal ion was studied using the ideal adsorbed solution theory. The regeneration study revealed that PoAP could be re-utilized up to 4 cycles for Pb+2 and 2 cycles for Cd+2 and Ni+2 ions. PoAP was successfully applied to real industrial wastewater for the removal of Pb+2, Cd+2, and Ni+2 ions.

RESUMO

Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized, and impregnated onto apple pomace surface (HANP@AP) for efficient removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions from water. HANP@AP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface area analysis. Batch sorption studies were carried out to investigate the influence of different parameters as amount of dose (g), pH, time (min), and initial concentration (mg L(-1)) on adsorption process. Experimental kinetic data followed pseudo-second-order model and equilibrium data well fitted to Langmuir adsorption model with maximum adsorption capacities of 303, 250, and 100 mg g(-1) for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions, respectively. Competitive adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions in presences of each other was studied to evaluate the removal efficiency of HANP@AP against multi metal-loaded water. HANP@AP was successfully applied to real industrial wastewater with 100 % removal of all three metal ions even at high concentration. HANP@AP could be recycled for four, four, and three cycles in case of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II), respectively. The study showed that HANP@AP is fast, cost effective, and environmental friendly adsorbent for removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions from real industrial wastewater.

RESUMO

Clematis gouriana (Ranunculaceae), a perennial herb, is used by the local inhabitants of the western Himalayan region for its medicinal properties. Major bioconstituents of C. gouriana leaves using different solvent extracts were obtained and analysed. The results revealed promising contents of phenolics (from 18.19 ± 0.10 to 22.17 ± 0.10 mg g(-1)) as gallic acid and flavonoids (from 2.83 ± 0.01 to 6.52 ± 0.08 mg g(-1)) as quercetin equivalent in different extracts. Aqueous acetone extract showed higher antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 129.11 and 25.35 µg mL(-1) against DPPH and ABTS free radicals, respectively. Antioxidant yield ranged from 16.87 ± 0.27 to 24.48 ± 0.13 mg g(-1) of Trolox equivalent in different extracts as measured by the FRAP assay. Furthermore, ethylacetate extract exhibited strong in vitro cytotoxicity against Chinese hamster ovary and glioma cell lines. Proximate composition (proteins, fats, ash and minerals) of C. gouriana leaves was also assessed. Results demonstrated the potential of C. gouriana bioconstituents as nutraceuticals.

RESUMO

Soil, an important environmental medium, is exposed to a number of pollutants including toxic heavy metals by various natural and anthropogenic activities. Consequently heavy metal contaminated soil has the potential to pose severe health risks and hazards to humans as well as other living creatures of the ecosystem through various routes of exposure such as direct ingestion, contaminated drinking ground water, food crops, contact with contaminated soil and through food chain. Therefore, it is mandatory to explore various techniques that could efficiently determine the occurrence of heavy metals in soil. A number of methods have been developed by several regulatory agencies and private laboratories and are applied routinely for the quantification and monitoring of soil matrices. The present review is an initiative to summarize the work on pollution levels of soil ecosystem and thus pertains to various extraction and quantification procedures used worldwide to analyze heavy metals in soil.

RESUMO

Pteris vittata L. subsp. vittata, a potential arsenic hyperaccumulator fern, growing naturally in the vicinity offly ash was analyzed for the concentration of nine heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn Ni, Al, Cr, Pb, Si, and As) from five different sites around of Kanti Thermal Power Station at Muzaffarpur in Bihar State, India. Metal accumulation in P. vittata was correlated with the level of pollution at five selected sampling sites. The results revealed significantly more accumulation of these metals in the above ground parts of the plant than the parts below ground. Statistical parameters such as the coefficient of variation (CV%) showed a higher for As, Cu, Cr, and a lower one for Fe, Ni, Al. There was high spatial variability in the total metal concentration at different sites. The present study confirmed that P. vittata is a heavy metals accumulator and that it is a highly suitable candidate for phytoremediation of metal contaminated wastelands.

RESUMO

The plant isolated antioxidant quercitrin has been encapsulated on poly-d,l-lactide (PLA) nanoparticles by solvent evaporation method to improve the solubility, permeability and stability of this molecule. The size of quercitrin-PLA nanoparticles is 250±68nm whereas that PLA nanoparticles is 195 ± 55nm. The encapsulation efficiency of nanoencapsulated quercitrin evaluated by HPLC and antioxidant assay is 40%. The in vitro release kinetics of quercitrin under physiological condition reveals initial burst release followed by sustained release. Less fluorescence quenching is observed with equimolar concentration of PLA encapsulated quercitrin than free quercitrin. The presence of quercitrin specific peaks on FTIR of five times washed quercitrin loaded PLA nanoparticles provides an extra evidence for the encapsulation of quercitrin into PLA nanoparticles. These properties of quercitrin nanomedicine provide a new potential for the use of such less useful highly active antioxidant molecule towards the development of better therapeutic for intestinal anti-inflammatory effect and nutraceutical compounds.

RESUMO

Single-drop microextraction (SDME) has become more popular than other microextraction techniques because it is simple, cost-effective, easy to operate and nearly solvent-free. The technique has been employed successfully for trace analysis in environmental, biomedical and food applications. In view of the increasingly stringent regulatory limits for many pesticides, which are below the LOD of the existing instruments, SDME may provide a cost-effective solution for reducing the LOD of pesticides. The present review focuses on recent development in SDME technique, and its application coupled with various analytical techniques, such as GC-MS, GC and HPLC for pesticide residue analysis in different matrices. The advantages, limitations and outlook on the future of SDME technique for its wider applications are also discussed.

RESUMO

Use of pesticides has turned out to be an obligatory input to agriculture and public health. Versatile use of pesticides had resulted in contamination of all basic necessities of life, i.e. air, water and food. Among various pesticides, organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), derivative of phosphoric acid, are the most extensively used insecticides or acaricides in many crops. Due to low persistency and high killing efficiency of OPPs, many agriculturalists regularly use this group of pesticides for various vegetables and fruits crops. The continuous use of pesticides has caused the deleterious effects to ecosystem. In response to this, a number of methods have been developed by several regulatory agencies and private laboratories and are applied routinely for the quantification and monitoring of multi pesticide residues in vegetables and crops. The present review pertains to various extraction and quantification procedures used world wide to analyze OPPs residues in various vegetables and fruits.

RESUMO

The antioxidant molecule quercetin has been encapsulated on poly-D,L-lactide (PLA) nanoparticles by solvent evaporation method for the improvement of its poor aqueous solubility and stability. The surface morphology and average size of PLA and quercetin loaded PLA nanoparticles are 170+/-25 and 130+/-30 nm respectively. The antioxidant activities of the PLA encapsulated quercetin nanomedicine are identical to free quercetin. The nanoencapsulation efficiency of quercetin evaluated by HPLC and antioxidant assay is 96.7%. The in vitro release kinetics under physiological condition show initial burst release followed by slow and sustained release. The complete release and maximum retention of quercetin is 72 and 96h respectively. The less fluorescence quenching efficiency of quercetin-PLA nanoparticles than free quercetin on BSA confirms the controlled release of quercetin from PLA nanoparticles. These properties of PLA encapsulated quercetin molecule pave way for encapsulating various therapeutically less useful highly active antioxidant molecules towards the development of better therapeutic compounds.
