RESUMO

The localization of retinofugal projections in the rat studied by means of the autoradiography and HRP methods coincides with the site of sources of direct hippocampal projections in the anterior thalamic nuclei found on the basis of the HRP retrograde axonal transport. The data obtained firstly represent the anterodorsal and anterolateral thalamic nuclei as a main thalamic source of hippocampal visual afferents in mammals and permit reconstructing the short visual input to the hippocamp, i.e. the retino-thalamo-hippocampal pathway.

RESUMO

The sources of afferents to the rostral field CA3 of the dorsal hippocampus in rat were revealed with the help of HRP retrograde transport. After ionophoretic injections of HRP into the above mentioned region of the hippocampus labelled cells were found in the anterodorsal, anteroventral, anteromedial and anterolateral nuclei of thalamus; in the supramammillar and submammillothalamic nuclei of hypothalamus: in stratum griseum centralis of the optic tectum; in the parietal, insular, temporal, retrosplenial and pyriform areas of the neocortex.

RESUMO

The connections of the retrosplenial field of the limbic cortex and hippocampal formation in the rat were studied by the horseradish peroxidase method. After dry horseradish peroxidase application into dorsocaudal part of the retrosplenial cortex labelled cells were found in the rostral pole of the hippocampal field Ca3 and in the presubiculum. After ionophoretic injection of HRP into the rostral pole of the hippocamp labelled cells were found in the layers V and VI of the retrosplenial field of the limbic cortex and in the prosubiculum. The data obtained show reciprocal direct connections between the rostral pole of the hippocamp and retrosplenial field of the limbic cortex, as well as direct efferent projections of the dorsal subiculum to the rostral pole of the hippocamp.

RESUMO

The diencephalohippocampal connections in rats were studied using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde axonal transport technique. After HRP injections into the CA1 hippocampal field labelled cells were found both in the thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei. It is found that both specific (anterodorsal, anteroventral, lateral anterior, lateral) and nonspecific (reuniens, central lateral, central medial) nuclei of thalamus are the sources of the hippocampal afferents. The cells of the paraventricular and perifornical hypothalamic nuclei also send their axons to the hippocamp. The data obtained show that the hippocamp receives direct thalamic connections from the thalamic structures which have sensory inputs.

RESUMO

It has been demonstrated that the posterior lateral thalamic nucleus of the rat receives information from the visual, somatic and auditory systems. Some of the neurons (63%) have a convergent input from these systems, although these neurons exhibit functional specificity with respect to the predominant inhibitory influence of the background activity of one of the sensory systems investigated. The other part of the neurons (37%) receives information only from the visual or somatic system, these neurons exhibiting excitatory phasic reaction to sensory stimuli.
