Tunable release of clavam from clavam stabilized gold nanoparticles--design, characterization and antimicrobial study.

A facile one-step approach is developed to synthesize highly stable (up to 6months) gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using Clavam, pharmaceutical form of amoxicillin which contains a mixture of amoxicillin and potassium salt of clavulanic acid, at room temperature (25-30°C). The clavam stabilized GNPs are characterized using various techniques including UV-Visible, FT-IR spectrophotometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tunable release of clavam from clavam stabilized GNPs is demonstrated using intracellular concentrations of glutathione (GSH). The process is monitored using an UV-Vis spectroscopy and the amount of clavam released in terms of amoxicillin concentration is quantitatively estimated using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) technique. In vitro study reveals that the clavam released from GNPs' surface was found to show a significant enhancement in antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and the cause of enhancement is addressed.

Mitochondrial ageing and the beneficial role of alpha-lipoic acid.

Oxidative damage has been implicated to be a major causative factor in the decline in physiological functions that occur during the ageing process. Mitochondria are known to be a rich source for the production of free radicals and, consequently, mitochondrial components are susceptible to lipid peroxidation (LPO) that decreases respiratory activity. In the present investigation, we have evaluated mitochondrial LPO, 8-oxo-dG, oxidized glutathione, reduced glutathione, ATP, lipoic acid, TCA cycle enzymes and electron transport chain (ETC) complex activities in the brain of young versus aged rats. In aged rats, the contents of LPO, oxidized glutathione and 8-oxo-dG were high whereas reduced glutathione, ATP, lipoic acid, TCA cycle enzymes and ETC complex activities were found to be low. Lipoic acid administration to aged rats reduced the levels of mitochondrial LPO, 8-oxo-dG and oxidized glutathione and enhanced reduced glutathione, ATP, lipoic acid and ETC complex activities. In young rats lipoic acid administration showed only minimal lowering the levels of LPO, 8-oxo-dG and oxidized glutathione and slight increase in the levels of reduced glutathione, ATP, lipoic acid, TCA cycle enzymes and ETC complex activities. These findings suggest that the dithiol, lipoic acid, provides protection against age-related oxidative damage in the mitochondria of aged rats.

Sex differences in creative perceptions of Malaysian students.

Scores for creative perception of 101 boys and 69 girls on What Kind of Person Are You and Something About Myself were not significant for overall scores on both measures, but boys obtained somewhat higher means on Initiative than girls. Further replications on similar samples are needed.

Preliminary study of the bilingual version of the self-actualization value subscale of the Personal Orientation Inventory.

A bilingual version of Shostrom's Self-actualization Value subscale of the Personal Orientation Inventory was administered to 62 Malaysian students. For the 26-item paired-opposite inventory, test-retest reliability over 6 mo. was .39 (for boys .42, for girls .37) and criterion validity was .57. Replication with other groups is recommended.

Preliminary study of the bilingual version of the Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory.

A bilingual version of the Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory was given to 70 Malaysian students. The two 50-item subscales, 'Something About Myself' and 'What Kind of Person Are You?", require the respondent to choose one of two alternatives. Test-retest reliability and criterion validity indices for this version suggest the bilingual form is suitable to assess the creative perception of these students. Replication with other groups is recommended.
