Concentration and distribution of silica nanoparticles in colon cancer cells assessed by synchrotron based X-ray techniques.

The quantitative uptake of Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), although representing an essential prerequisite for their theranostic use, is difficult to address and it is still not utterly investigated. In this study, we tested the uptake and toxicity of two different types of luminescent core-shell silica-PEG (polyethylene glycol) nanoparticles SiNP and their carboxylate analogues on human adenocarcinoma cell line LoVo. We assessed the intracellular spatial distribution and concentration of Si element in the cell by a state-of-the-art approach merging synchrotron-based X-ray techniques (XRFM) with scanning transmission X-Ray microscopy (STXM). The concentration maps of Si obtained reflect the distribution of the SiNPs. In addition, we calculated the number of SiNPs per volume unit in each single cell, quantitating the exact amount of conveyed particles. The absence of effects on proliferation and cell death was confirmed by viability assays, morphological analysis and cytofluorimetric evaluation of ROS content. The three-dimensional analysis of intracellular uptake of both types of nanoparticles (with different surface charge) was performed by confocal fluorescence microscopy, which showed a main localization in the cytosolic region with no sign of nuclear uptake.

Role of Nd/Ba disorder on the penetration depth of Nd(1+x)Ba(2-x)Cu(3)O(7-delta) thin films

We report on a study on the effect of Nd/Ba disorder on the ab-plane penetration depth of epitaxial Nd(1+x)Ba(2-x)Cu(3)O(7-delta) thin films. While in stoichiometric samples lambda(T) at low temperature is linear, Nd-rich films exhibit a quadratic law. For low Nd excess (x<0.04), a satisfying fit is obtained using the "dirty" d-wave model assuming that Nd ions at Ba sites act as strong scattering centers. At high x (x>0.15) the data are explained if Nd/Ba disorder becomes less effective as a source of scattering. The effect of localization has been discussed to account for the experimental results.

Linkage analysis of candidate endothelin pathway genes in nonsyndromic familial orofacial cleft.

There is good evidence from linkage analysis and mouse model knockouts that the endothelin-1 gene (EDN1) is a good candidate for non-syndromic orofacial cleft (OFC) disease. EDN1 maps to the chromosomal region of the OFC1 locus in 6p23. Therefore we have examined three other candidate genes in the endothelin pathway (ECE1, EDNRA and EDNRB, which map to chromosomes 1, 4 and 13 respectively) in a linkage study of 9 families with OFC, where the disorder is not linked to chromosome 6p23. The total lod score for these 9 multiplex families never exceeded -2.00 and thus our data suggest that EDN1 and related genes are not involved in non-syndromic familial OFC.

The AA. in this note IV report the most recent acquisitions about hematology, serology and immunopathologic findings; describe the association and the overlap between oral lesions in Lupus Erythematosus and other diseases. Finally analysed the importance of establishing the diagnosis of oral manifestations of Lupus Erythematosus.

[Cranial and facial sutures: embryological aspects, anatomy and effects on orthopedic treatment]. / Suture del cranio e della faccia: aspetti embriologici, anatomici e ripercussioni in seguito a trattamento ortopedico.

In this work, the AA. have related the principal suture of the skull and the face, analysing the embryonal, functional and anatomic aspects, with particular reference to the times of end of growth and ossification. Furthermore, the AA. had explained the orthopedic appliances which influence, with their action, the activity of specific suture, emphasizing the growth period in which they are more efficient in the correction of the various dentofacial disharmonies.
