Breast milk serves as the primary source of nourishment for newborns. In cases of low milk production, one approach to address this challenge involves the consumption of lactagogues. Chicken-herb essence, a beverage rich in protein, amino acids, and minerals, presents itself as a viable option to supplement a lactating mother's diet, particularly in terms of protein intake. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chicken-herb essence on prolactin and lactoferrin in lactating rats. Furthermore, the study also assessed the lactagogue effect on IgA in offspring. The experimental research method used a completely randomized design. The animal models in this study were female Sprague Dawley rats. The result showed that there was an increase in milk production, as seen from the results of the lactagogue effect. The highest increase in prolactin and lactoferrin was obtained in treatment group II (TG II). The increases in prolactin and lactoferrin of TG II were 214.18 ± 71.99 and 904.02 ± 435.35 pg/mL, respectively. The lactagogue test showed that TG II haspotency as a milk-booster. Testing the blood serum of offspring showed that the highest concentration of IgA was also found in TG II at 398.34 ± 214.85 pg/mL.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs), according to the NOVA classification food system, are food products that are processed using advanced processing technology, which improves palatability and sensory quality. However, UPFs increase the daily intake of energy, sodium, sugar, and total fat (including saturated fat), and decrease the intake of fiber. This might trigger overweight and obesity, the initial stages of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). However, the effect of UPF consumption on NCDs remains under debate. This study aimed to synthesize the effect size of UPF dose response on various NCDs by using a meta-analysis method. The main output was a hazard ratio (HR) and a 95% confidence interval (CI). Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) selection guidelines, 18 research articles were chosen for further effect size synthesis. The results showed that UPF consumption significantly increased the daily intake of carbohydrates, added sugar, saturated fat, sodium, energy, cholesterol, and total fat; increases of 49.64, 40.78, 30.00, 27.76, 26.67, 25.69, and 15.77%, respectively, were observed. Moreover, with UPF consumption, the fiber intake was way below the daily dietary recommendation (DR), at -38.55%. Further, a 10% increment in UPF consumption significantly affects diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and cancer (HR ± 95% CI: 1.115 ± 0.044, 1.096 ± 0.053, 1.068 ± 0.050, and 1.020 ± 0.020, respectively). Thus, limiting daily UPF consumption could help prevent obesity and various NCDs.

The extrusion process may influence the nutritional profiles of carbohydrate-rich food ingredients, including the glycemic index (GI) and antioxidant capacity. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional profile of extruded purple sweet potato (EPSP) substituted with kidney bean flour (KBF) (0, 30, and 40%). These foods were further characterized by their proximate composition, resistant starch, polyphenols, GI, and antioxidant capacities. The 40% KBF substitution enhanced the protein and fiber contents of the EPSP by up to 8% and 6%, respectively. Moreover, it also revealed that EPSP with 40% KBF substitution had a low-GI category (53.1), while the 0 and 30% substitution levels had a high-GI category, i.e., 77.4 and 74.7, respectively. However, the extrusion processing reduced the anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity of purple sweet potato flour containing 40% KBF by 48% and 19%, respectively. There was a significant relationship between the GI values of proteins, fats, and fibers (p < 0.05). The insignificant effect of resistant starch and phenol contents on GI value was recorded due to the low concentrations of those components. KBF substitution could ameliorate the profile of protein, fiber, and GI, but not for antioxidant capacity. The other innovative processes for preserving antioxidant capacity might improve the product quality.

As a contribution to the debate on the comparison of nutritional quality between conventional versus organic products, the present study would like to provide new results on this issue specifically on dairy products by integrating the last 3 years' studies using a meta-analysis approach with Hedges' d effect size method. The current meta-analysis shows that organic dairy products contain significantly higher protein, ALA, total omega-3 fatty acid, cis-9,trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid, trans-11 vaccenic acid, eicosapentanoic acid, and docosapentanoic acid than those of conventional types, with cumulative effect size ( ± 95% confidence interval) of 0.56 ± 0.24, 1.74 ± 0.16, 0.84 ± 0.14, 0.68 ± 0.13, 0.51 ± 0.16, 0.42 ± 0.23, and 0.71 ± 0.3, respectively. It is also observed that organic dairy products have significantly (P < 0.001) higher omega-3 to -6 ratio (0.42 vs. 0.23) and Δ9-desaturase index (0.28 vs. 0.27) than the conventional types. The current regulation on organic farming indeed drives organic farms to production of organic dairy products with different nutritional qualities from conventional ones. The differences in feeding regime between conventional and organic dairy production is suspected as the reason behind this evidence. Further identical meta-analysis may be best applicable for summarizing a comparison between conventional and organic foodstuffs for other aspects and food categories.
