BACKGROUND: Understanding how parasitoids respond to temperature is crucial for improving biological control strategies under the context of global warming. This study examined the suitability of Myzus persicae and its parasitoid Aphidius gifuensis to varying temperature conditions, as well as the stage-specific response of A. gifuensis to high temperatures. RESULTS: High temperatures had a significant impact on the both M. persicae and A. gifuensis. When exposed to 36°C, M. persicae developed more slowly and produced smaller adults compared to control, regardless of the duration of exposure (2, 4 or 6 h); additionally, the survival rate of M. persicae nymphs sharply decreased under these conditions. Exposure to 36°C for 4 h negatively impacted the development of A. gifuensis. Female parasitoids exposed to 32°C developed into smaller adults, whereas males exposed to all three temperature levels were smaller compared to control group. Female parasitoids exposed to high temperatures, regardless of the specific heat level and duration, exhibited reduced longevity and decreased fecundity. None of the parasitoids exposed to 36°C for 6 h daily developed into adults. Heat treated during early developmental stages (2 and 4 days old) had a greater influence on parasitoid development, whereas heat treatment at 4 and 6 days old had a more significant impact on its fecundity. CONCLUSION: High temperatures not only directly affected the performance of A. gifuensis, but also exerted indirect effects by influencing the quality of the host aphids M. persicae. The deleterious effects of high temperature on larvae can persist into the adult stage, affecting the longevity and reproduction of adults. These findings are important for the utilization of A. gifuensis in the control of M. persicae in warming environments. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: The effects of surgical day (workdays or weekends) on occurrence and outcome of cardiac surgery associated -acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the incidence and short-term outcomes of CSA-AKI in patients undergoing surgery on workdays and weekends. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent cardiac surgery from July 2020 to December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. These patients were divided into a weekend group and workday group. The primary endpoint was the incidence of CSA-AKI. The secondary endpoints included renal function recovery and in-hospital mortality. The logistic regression model was used to explore the risk factors for CSA-AKI. Stratification analysis was performed to estimate the association between CSA-AKI and weekend surgery stratified by emergency surgery. RESULTS: A total of 1974 patients undergoing cardiac surgery were enrolled. The incidence of CSA-AKI in the weekend group was significantly higher than that in the workday group (42.8% vs. 34.7%, P = 0.038). Further analysis of patients with CSA-AKI showed that there was no difference in renal function recovery between the workday AKI group and weekend AKI group. There was no difference in in-hospital mortality between the weekend group and workday group (3.6% vs. 2.4%, P = 0.327); however, the in-hospital mortality of the weekend AKI group was significantly higher than that of the workday AKI group (8.5% vs. 2.9%, P = 0.014). Weekend surgery and emergency surgery were independent risk factors for CSA-AKI. The multiplicative model showed an interaction between weekend surgery and emergency surgery; weekend surgery was related to an increased risk of AKI among patients undergoing emergency surgery [adjusted OR (95% CI): 1.96 (1.012-8.128)]. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of CSA-AKI in patients undergoing cardiac surgery on weekends was significantly higher compared to that in patients undergoing cardiac surgery on workdays. Weekend surgery did not affect the in-hospital mortality of all patients but significantly increased the mortality of AKI patients. Weekend surgery and emergency surgery were independent risk factors for CSA-AKI. Weekend emergency surgery significantly increased the risk of CSA-AKI.

When the favored host of an herbivorous insect pest is absent, the availability of alternative host plants can maintain insect pest populations. Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major invasive, polyphagous insect pest in China. To investigate the suitability of Chinese cabbage as an alternative host for S. frugiperda, oviposition preferences and life history traits were determined for S. frugiperda on Chinese cabbage, corn, and winter wheat over three generations. Results showed that S. frugiperda females preferred to lay their eggs on corn compared to winter wheat and Chinese cabbage. The survival rate of S. frugiperda decreased after switching from corn to Chinese cabbage, only 6% of individuals successfully pupated in the third generation. In addition, S. frugiperda reared on Chinese cabbage had lower pupal weight and fecundity. Winter wheat was a good host for S. frugiperda; although the survival rate decreased when S. frugiperda switched from corn to winter wheat in the parental generation, the survival rate increased over the next two generations to be as high as those reared on corn. Chinese cabbage is not a good long-term host for S. frugiperda, but it could maintain the pest population for at least two generations when more suitable host plants are unavailable. These results will inform management strategies for S. frugiperda.

Plants have evolved a number of different chemical defenses, covering nearly all classes of (secondary) metabolites, that represent a major barrier to herbivory: some are constitutive; others are induced after attacks from herbivores (HIPVs) and may elicit the attraction of predators and parasitoids. Here, we studied how the female solitary endoparasitoid Aphelinus varipes responds to plant and host aphid volatiles in a series of experiments on five commercially important vegetables that were either healthy or infested with the aphid Myzus persicae: chili pepper, eggplant, crown daisy, Chinese cabbage and cabbage. The results for the olfactory responses of A. varipes showed that the presence of M. persicae increased the attraction of the endoparasitoid to the infested plants. In a second experiment, volatiles from highly attractive and repellent plants were obtained via headspace collection to investigate volatiles from healthy and aphid-damaged plants. The results for the differences in volatile profiles in response to aphid infestation in chili pepper cultivar were dominated by the volatile blends, including α-pinene, decanal and phthalic acid, while in cabbage they were dominated by isophorone. Moreover, when HIPVs with different concentrations were compared, α-pinene at a dose rate of 100 ng/µL attracted more parasitoids, and the comparison was useful to understand the mechanisms of plant secondary volatiles during aphid infestation and to provide new resources to control this insect pest. Overall our study shows how HIPVs can bolster tritrophic interactions by enhancing the attractiveness of parasitoids.

Host plants indirectly affect parasitoid life-history traits via parasitoid hosts. Here, we evaluated the life-history traits of the parasitoid Aphelinus varipes emerging from the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae), feeding on five commercially important vegetables. The results showed that A. varipes fed upon and parasitized maximum number of aphids grown on chili pepper, and least on cabbage. The emergence rate was the highest on chili pepper (100%) and lowest on crown daisy (71.1 ± 2.17%). Aphelinus varipes developed fastest on hosts reared on chili pepper (12.9 ± 0.02 d) and slowest on aphids reared on cabbage (14.1 ± 0.02 d). The body weight and body size of emerging wasp parasitoids and aphids were greatest on chili pepper and lowest on cabbage. Aphid body size positively affect parasitism, development time, and body size of the parasitoid. In conclusion, our results showed that the parasitoid A. varipes had variable life-history parameters, depending on the host plant species and host body size. The effects of host plant species on performance of M. persicae and its parasitoid A. varipes are discussed, along with the potential of using A. varipes to control M. persicae on different plants.

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a polyphagous insect pest is a major threat to a wide range of crops worldwide. Aiming to evaluate the life history traits of M. persicae, feeding on different host plants, we used five vegetables: cabbage, Brassica oleracea (Brassicaceae); chinese cabbage, B. rapa (Brassicaceae); chili pepper, Capsicum annum (Solanaceae); crown daisy, Chrysanthemum coronarium (Asteraceae); and eggplant, Solanum melongena (Solanaceae). TWOSEX-MSchart software was used for the statistical analysis about the age-stage, two-sex life table theory. The highest fecundity (69.65 individuals) rate of M. persicae, intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.425 d-1), finite rate of increase (λ = 1.531 d-1), net reproductive rate (R0 = 69.65 offspring), and shortest mean generation time (T = 9.964 d) were recorded on the chili pepper plant. Whereas, lower fitness occurred on cabbage. The findings attained from population growth parameters indicate that chili pepper is the most susceptible plant, while cabbage is resistant to aphids. Population projection results also supported this statement, as the final total population size on cabbage was significantly lower than other plants. The reported information would be useful for devising integrated pest management programs, particularly those involving M. persicae. This information also suggests the adaptability of M. persicae causing economic damage to these vegetable cultivars.

Natal rearing experience of animals may affect their behaviors, such as habitat selection and oviposition decision. As part of the overall fitness of insect parasitoids, successful host discrimination (distinguishing parasitized hosts from unparasitized hosts) is of paramount importance. In this study we examined whether and how parasitoids' natal rearing experience would affect their host discrimination ability according to host availability. We established separate colonies of Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead by continual rearing on two hosts, Sitobion avenae F. and Myzus persicae (Suzler), and quantified self superparasitism and self superparasitism versus parasitism ratio for the four combinations of parasitoid colonies and host species (S. aveane and M. persicae) at four host densities (30, 50, 100 or 150 per plant). Results showed that self superparasitism of M. persicae by A. gifuensis reared on S. avenae was significantly higher than by those reared on M. persicae, no matter whether the host densities were 30, 50, 100 or 150. Aphidius gifuensis reared on M. persicae significantly superparasitized more S. avenae than those reared on S. aveane only when host density was 30. Self superparasitism versus parasitism ratio of A. gifuensis from both colonies was always lower on natal hosts than on new hosts, and the difference was more pronounced as the host density decreased. These results suggested that natal rearing effects is important on host discrimination and oviposition decision of the parasitoid A. gifuensis. These effects promoted the parasitoid's host adaptation and made them confer greater fitness.
