[Preoperative immunoprophylaxis in wound and urinary infections in urological patients with Urostim]. / Predoperativna imunoprofilaktik na ranevata i uroinfektsiiata pri urologichno bolni s urostim.

In two groups of 25 urological patients each, with and free of urinary infection, Urostim is administered fifteen days before and after the operation. The prophylactic effect of the drug in terms of hospital transmitted wound and urinary infections is recorded on the basis of comparative study with control groups. As shown by the results obtained, Urostim immunoprophylaxis yields positive results in urological practice. In 80 per cent of the cases development of the complication is prevented. Vaccine administration in conjunction with an updated antibiotic broadens the therapeutic scope in patients with urinary infection.

[Oleogranuloma of the penis]. / Oleogranuloma na poloviia chlen.

Based on literature data and personal clinical experience with twenty patients presenting sex organ oleogranuloma, summed up inferences are reached about the choice of a rational therapeutic approach. The conservative treatment in both acute and chronic stage of the disease proves ineffective. Operative treatment is the basic one, and is aimed at radical removal of the granulation tissue and injected lipid material deposits. The resulting skin defect may be covered using diverse procedures, briefly outlined in the paper.

[The problem of paramedicine and the therapy of urologic patients]. / Otnosno problema parameditsina i terapiia na urologichno bolnite.

A questionnaire study covering a large number of urological patients is carried out in an attempt to establish the extent to which the services of paramedical healers are sought, as well as the underlying motivation involved. It is demonstrated that 13.12 per cent of the inquired refer to alternative medicine specialists. Usually it is a matter of patients with chronic and incurable conditions, such as nephrolithiasis, adenoma of the prostate gland, oncourological diseases, chronic prostatitis and cystalgia. Of the vast variety of healers, herbalists and extrasensory perception therapists appear to be the most attractive. Nearly one-third of the patients appear to be the most attractive. Nearly one-third of the patients attain temporary effect of a varying degree, estimated subjectively. All patients with some improvement have undergone parallel treatment by urologist and healer. The problem is comprehensively discussed.

[The place of the screening method in the early discovery and treatment of cryptorchism]. / Miasto na skriningoviia metod za rannoto otkrivane i lechenie na kriptorkhizma.

According to modern concepts, only early operative treatment of cryptorchidism may guarantee good results. This has been proven by the results obtained by the authors, who for five years have on mass prophylactic examination (1984-1988) searched for cryptorchidism in children attending kindergartens in the town of Tolbukhin. In this way the authors succeeded in realising highest operative activity in the age from 3 to 4 years.

[The incidence of duodenogastric reflux and its relation to stomach and duodenal diseases]. / Chestota na duodenogastralniia refluks i vruzkata mu sus zaboliavaniiata na stomakha i duodenuma.

The data available in the literature on the incidence of duodenogastric reflux and its relation with diseases of the stomach and duodenum are controversial. A study was performed based on the results of 4256 primary endoscopies of the stomach and duodenum: 3673 in nonoperated patients and 583 in patients having undergone vagotomy and resection. For duodenogastric reflux one judged from the yellow coloration of the gastric juice and regurgitation of bile at the moment of examination. Reflux had 428 patients (10.05 per cent)--330 in the nonoperated group (8.98 per cent) and 98 in the operated group (16.81 per cent). Inference is drawn that duodenogastric reflux does not coincide in incidence with reflux gastritis and that causal relation might be searched between gastritis, reflux esophagitis and duodenitis, on the one hand, and duodenogastric reflux, on the other.

Among a series of 3100 patients with urologic disease, treated over a period of 7 years, chronic renal failure (CRF) had 161. In rank order CRF was most common in patients with prostate adenoma (36.02 per cent), followed by patients with renal calculosis (27.33 per cent) and renal cancer (10.56 per cent). The causes of CRF and its dynamics, depending on the underlying disease, the therapeutic approach and the principles of treatment are discussed in detail. The inferences from the experience gained at the clinic point to the need of accentuating the attention of urologists and nephrologists for early diagnosis and adequate treatment of urologic diseases, which might cause CRF. The principles of its treatment are outlined.

[Biological action of an unidentified factor from streptomycetes]. / Biologichno deistvie na neidentifitsiran faktor ot streptomitseti.

Studied were a total of 926 actinomycetic strains. In 285 of them (27.8 per cent) there was a capacity to synthesize growth factors which stimulated the production of fruit bodies of the mycelial fungus 2x. The culture liquid of two of the producent strains, 210-c and 192-B, was given as a supplement to the ordinary feed ration of albino mice. It was found that birth rate rose twice with the test groups. Histologically, a stimulant action was demonstrated with regard to ovogenesis in terms of the earlier maturation of follicles and formation of corpora lutea both in rats and in 4-5-month-old lambs.

[Influenza epizootic in swine due to strain A (Victoria/3/75 H3N2)]. / Prouchvaniia vurkhu gripna epizootiia po svinete, prichinena ot shtam A (Viktoriia/3/75 H3N2).

Studies were carried out on the first grippe epizootic in pigs in Bulgaria. The affected animals showed a rise in temperature (40.5 to 41.8 degrees C), loss of appetite, abdominal type of respiration, and noisy and painful cough. The infection ran its course with a picture typical of a virus disease which did not respond to broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment. On an average the duration of the clinical course lasted 4 to 5 days, affecting almost all swine on a pig breeding farm, with single death cases. The morphologic changes observed in animals killed for diagnostic purposes were typical of a grippe infection. Isolated was a grippe virus A (Antimovo) 1/80/H3N2) the preliminary typisation of which showed close relation to strain A (victoria) 3/75/H3N2/. Serologic investigations using double blood samples from the affected pigs in double immunodiffusion test and hemagglutination-inhibition test demonstrated the etiologic role played by the isolated grippe virus.
