RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There is growing research evidence on bodily discourses and body image issues of women with disabilities. Within the art-based intervention repertoire for persons with disabilities, dance and movement-based therapies and interventions are gaining prominence. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of dance sessions (delivered online) on body image, body satisfaction/dissatisfaction, and wellbeing of women with disabilities. METHOD: A quasi-experimental waitlist control design study was conducted with data collected at two time points: baseline or pre-test and five-months later or post-test. Outcomes were measured using the Body Image Scale and the WHO-5-Wellbeing Index. RESULTS: The dance sessions were effective (Hedges' g = -0.56 -0.88; p < 0.01) and post-test body dissatisfaction scores were lower and wellbeing scores were higher for participants with a college degree or postgraduate degree, self-employed or students, and whose intervention compliance was above threshold (>50% dance sessions attended and corresponding homework sessions completed). Tobit regression models indicated that it was possible to estimate post-test outcomes due to dance sessions alone, controlling for significant socio-demographics. DISCUSSION: The domain knowledge of non-pharmacological art-based interventions for persons with disabilities, particularly women, is supported. CONCLUSIONS: Findings commend dance sessions as effective psychotherapeutic mechanisms to mitigate body dissatisfaction, improve body image and wellbeing of women with disabilities. Future research may focus on large-scale cross-sectional trials, variations in the repertoire for women with different disability types and histories, and qualitative narratives.

RESUMO

This article reports a longitudinal study comparing religiosity among two cohorts of Indian older adults-those who age in the homeland of India (AIH cohort) and immigrants (to the USA) or diaspora older adults (DOA). Results indicated that AIH and DOA cohorts' religiosity outcomes were comparable at baseline but there was a statistically significant increase in all outcomes of the DOA cohort at subsequent time points. Women and single older adults in both the cohorts had higher religiosity scores at baseline. Religiosity scores were higher among those in the DOA cohort who migrated following marital disruption (widowhood, divorce) or grandchild birth and lived with adult immigrant children and their families. The immigration process can have an impact on religious orientation of older adults and place is a significant variable impacting religiosity possibly for augmenting the sense of self, acquire social capital and preserve cultural identity in the foreign land.

RESUMO

This article reports a study on the impact of two continuing education programs for pastors working in prisons and correctional settings. Pastors who did the spirituality refresher training sessions reported greater resilience and social entrepreneurship inclinations posttest compared to those who did the expressive writing sessions. Male pastors, with a postgraduate degree and chaplaincy-focused training, prison pastors, ever-singles, pastors living in religious institutions/seminaries, and with higher intervention compliance, reported higher benefits from spirituality refresher training.

RESUMO

The researcher reports the impact of online yoga lessons on a cohort of community-dwelling older adult women in mitigating fears, anxieties and promoting resilience, wellbeing and salutogenic wellness during the pandemic as compared to a control group. Online yoga lessons were effective and economic class, education, religion, marital status, and living arrangements were significant moderators. Intervention adherence had the strongest predictor effects. The combined effects of significant predictors were robust and latent class analyses indicated middle class, above threshold (>50%) lessons attendees and self-practice doers, single, living in nonstandard families, college educated, and Hindus, were likely to gain most.

RESUMO

This article reports a wait list control design study on the influence of an online meditation training program for geriatric social workers (GSWs) in a range of adult day care facilities across eight Asian and African cities. Results indicated that the online program was effective in building resilience and promoting job satisfaction among the intervention group. The program was more effective for participants from Asian cities, women, Hindus, and Buddhists working in transitional day care facilities and regularly logging into the self-practice sessions. Self-practice was an important mediator determining the relationship between demographic predictors and outcomes. This synchronous and asynchronous online program can be used by GSWs with some modifications for participants from African cities; men; Muslims and Christians; and those working in active adult, palliative, and memory care facilities. Refinements may entail adding familiar spiritual ideologies, some activities for men involving greater verbalization of feelings and emotions linked to the work, and intensive exercises addressing specific challenges of workers in palliative and memory care facilities.

RESUMO

This article reports the impact of an online spiritual counseling (OSC) program in mitigating anxiety and building self-esteem and academic self-efficacy among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in universities. Compared to online relaxation sessions, the OSC was more effective. Male DHH students and those whose parents were highly qualified exhibited less anxiety and higher self-esteem and self-efficacy at pretest (T1). Post-test (T2) male students having better educated parents responded better to the OSC. T2 anxiety was lower and self-esteem and academic self-efficacy was higher for liberal arts students and having stay-at-home parents compared with science and commerce students and whose parents worked outside home. Self-esteem was also positively moderated by better economic class and presence of siblings. Intervention compliance in terms of regular attendance and self-practice mediated the relationship between sociodemographic predictors and outcomes. Results support the biopsychosocial model and encourage the implementation of the OSC with DHH university students.

RESUMO

This article reports a one-year study examining the effect of a smartphone meditation app (M-App) in alleviating burnout and promoting resilience among chaplains working in hospices of older adults in Asian and African cities (N1 = 96; N2 = 85). Results indicated that chaplains who used the M-App exhibited lesser emotional exhaustion and depersonalization as burnout markers and higher personal achievement and resilience as compared to leisure app (L-App) users. The M-App was effective (Cohen's d range = 3.08-5.07, p = .001) for the intervention cohort. Male chaplains, highly qualified, attached to assisted living hospices, who used the M-App once-twice a day, perused both videos and learning sessions and self-practiced regularly, reported lower emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and higher personal achievement and resilience post-test. M-App usage behavior mediated the relationship between demographic and hospice related moderators and outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To examine the impact of a meditation program in mitigating loneliness and promoting wellbeing, life satisfaction and contentment among retired South Asian older adults. METHOD: Intervention group older adults (IN2 =166) underwent weekly classes of the customized meditation program for 2 years as compared to the control group (CN2 =157) who underwent no intervention. Four scales were used to measure the outcomes: De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (six-items), Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale and Contentment with Life Assessment Scale. RESULTS: There were significant mean differences in the post-test scores on loneliness, wellbeing, life satisfaction and contentment outcomes of the intervention group, with high observed effect sizes (Cohen's d range = 2.43-8.78, p≤.01). The intervention group older adults reported that they were less lonely and experienced greater wellbeing, life satisfaction and contentment post-test (ηp2 =.71-.78, p≤.01). Within the intervention cohort, post-test scores were higher for men, Hindus, middle class, married, living with spouse/children/kin, with acquired treatable lifestyle ailments, who attended 76-100 meditation lessons and regularly practiced at home. Results of the hierarchical regression models indicated that home practice was the strongest predictor explaining 17% (±.82%) variation in the outcomes. The structural equation models indicated that meditation lessons attended and home practice mediated the relationship between demographic variables and outcomes. CONCLUSION: The customized meditation program is an effective loneliness-mitigating intervention for retired older adults. Identifying social cognition as a function of loneliness, this intervention addresses negative thoughts and feelings associated with a mental perception of loneliness.

RESUMO

Spiritual posts delivered via WhatsApp were found effective for mothers of children with ASD in mitigating parenting stress and building parental self-efficacy, confidence and resilience as compared to a control group. Intervention compliance was a prerequisite, and, middle-class mothers, highly qualified, salaried/self-employed, who perceived full support from their spouses/families and who also participated in other support groups or skill development programs benefitted most. Latent class analyses revealed six subgroups of participants likely to gain most from the intervention: middle class mothers, highly qualified, salaried/self-employed, who participated in other skill development programs, above threshold posts readers and homework doers. Spirituality built mothers' psychological resources, but dyadic interventions may be needed for dealing with challenges and uncertainties of autistic child's emotional/behavioral characteristics.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Food allergy prevalence in children and adolescents is increasing globally. Dietary restrictions are linked to the identities of food-allergic adolescents, which influences their wellbeing and self-concept. Mindful eating (ME) has been widely used to treat eating disorders. This study investigates whether WhatsApp-based mindful eating (ME) posts are effective for food-allergic adolescents in managing the condition, building self-concept and wellbeing. DESIGN AND METHODS: A waitlist control design study was conducted with food-allergic adolescents (N pre-test = 244; N post-test = 215). Three measures were used to assess the outcomes pre- (T1) and post-test (T2): Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), Brief Psychological Wellbeing Scale for Adolescents (BPWBS-A), and Piers-Harris 2 Children's Self-Concept Scale (PH-2-CSCC). RESULTS: The intervention was overall effective and more so for girls, middle class adolescents, with mothers as primary caregivers, whose primary caregivers had higher or postgraduate and professional qualifications, who were in turn also more likely to report no anaphylactic reaction and hospitalization emergency episodes at T2. Intervention compliance mediated the association between demographic predictors and outcome scores. Discriminant function analysis indicated stronger associations between certain predictors and subdomains of the self-concept outcome. CONCLUSIONS: With adequate emphasis on intervention compliance and condition management, the WhatsApp-based ME posts would be effective for food-allergic adolescents. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Pediatric nurses can recommend the intervention for community-dwelling food-allergic adolescents across contexts. Some refinements may be needed for boys, upper class adolescents, with father/kin as primary caregivers and less qualified parents.

RESUMO

Background: Neuropsychological functioning and visual working memory are vulnerable to age-related decline. This investigation examines the impact of meditation on the said outcomes for older adults in assisted living facilities. Older adults (N = 136) from four assisted living facilities in Mumbai and Pretoria were randomized into intervention and waitlist control groups.Method: The Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was used as a screening instrument for recruitment (cutoff total index score = 86 ± 4). RBANS, the Simple Object Span Test (SOST), and the Picture Span Test (PST) were used to assess the outcomes. The intervention group underwent a 90-day meditation training complemented with self-practice.Results: Posttest scores of the intervention group were higher. Older adult men, with college degree, middle class, widowed, in fair health, with no diagnosed psychiatric conditions, who attended at least 70 (out of 90) meditation lessons and who self-practiced at least 70 times, gained more from the meditation intervention. Intervention compliance had the strongest effect on posttest outcomes as well as sex and psychiatric morbidities. Conclusion: Meditation intervention needs some refinements for older adult women, with high school education, upper class, currently married, in poor health, with diagnosed anxiety/depression/drug dependence, who attended fewer meditation lessons and self-practiced infrequently.

RESUMO

This article reports a 2-year follow-up study on the effect of meditation to improve lateral and divergent thinking among older adults. Two measures were used with the intervention and control cohorts: Runco Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS) and Lateral Thinking Disposition Scale (LATD). There was a significant post-test increase in the RIBS and LATD scores of the intervention group. Post-test scores were higher for women, highly qualified, retired, ever-single, widowed or divorced, living solitary or in nonconventional arrangements, in good health, who attended at least 75% of the meditation lessons and regularly practiced at home. Home practice was the strongest predictor of higher post-test scores. Structural equation models indicated that adherence to the intervention by regular attendance and home practice mediated the relationship between demographic predictors and outcomes. Meditation is useful to improve lateral and divergent thinking among older adults with some refinements for sub-cohort-specific issues.

RESUMO

This article reports a multicity study on the effect of a yoga education program (YEP) in improving memory and cognitive functions of a nonclinical sample of community-dwelling older adults. Specifically, the intervening personal resources that bolster or hinder YEP effectiveness were examined. Of the original cohort of 918 older adults randomized into intervention and waitlist control groups, 792 remained with the study 5 years later. Results indicated that weekly YEP lessons and self-practice improved participants' scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Rivermead Behavioral Memory Test-Third Edition (RBMT-3). Participants from Asian cities, women, Hindus and Buddhists, middle class, highly educated, retired, ever single or widowed, living alone or with children and kin, were more responsive to the YEP. Regular attendance and self-practice were strong moderators of YEP effectiveness, with self-practice having the strongest predictor effect. Some cultural variations and improvisations would lend the YEP a wider application.

RESUMO

This article is based on a longitudinal study of Indian Americans devoted to a guru tradition, aiming to explore how faith contributes to their mental well-being. Respondent sample size at phase 1 (2003-2004) was 1872 and at phase 2 (2013-2014) was 1764. Two scales were used to measure faith maturity and well-being. Results showed that phase 2 well-being scores of the devotees were higher, influenced by faith maturity and engagement regularity, thereby corroborating the faith-religiosity-well-being link, further reinforced by the structural equation model. Faith emerges as critical variable in working with this cohort and planning interventions towards promoting their well-being.

RESUMO

This article reports on an experiment in 28 pediatric hospitals across 14 African and Asian cities. The aim was to examine the effect of a customized spiritually sensitive intervention (SSI) on mitigating depressive symptoms among hospitalized children with congenital heart diseases (CHD). Results showed that post-SSI, 1,139 treatment group children were less depressed vis-à-vis the control group. The SSI was more effective for children from African cities, boys, middle class, Christians and Buddhists, those undergoing medical care for ventricular septal defects, children who stayed in the hospital for 2 to 3 weeks and who regularly self-practiced the lessons after hospital discharge. The SSI could be effectively used for holistic pediatric nursing and health care across contexts with CHD affected children, with some culture-specific variations for greater impact.

RESUMO

This article reports a five-year follow-up study in two South Asian cities on the impact of a long-term meditation program in enhancing self-efficacy and resilience of home-based caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer's. Intervention group caregivers (pre-test N = 96; post-test N = 78) reported lower perceived caregiving burden, higher self-efficacy in obtaining respite, responding to disruptive patient behaviors and controlling upsetting thoughts, and greater resilience, post-test, in comparison to the control group (pre-test N = 89; post-test N = 67). Gender and relationship with the patient were two strong moderators determining program impact. Caregiver women, spouses, Hindus, middle class, with college and higher education, homemakers, who attended at least 75% of the meditation lessons and regularly practiced at home (i.e. once weekly for at least 75% of the weeks) reported lower post-test perceived caregiving burden, higher self-efficacy, and resilience. Results of the Tobit regression models confirmed the meditation-related moderators and indicated that home practice was the strongest predictor of post-test scores. Overall the meditation program is an effective intervention, however, would need to be refined for specific caregiver subgroups such as men, children and children-in-law and those working outside the home, to suit their realities.

RESUMO

This article reports a multicity yoga education program (YEP) experiment aimed at improving gait speed, muscular strength, and functional performance in Asian and African older women diagnosed with sarcopenia. Posttest gait speed and muscle strength scale scores were higher, and the six functional performance tests scores were above average for women who were from Asian cities; middle class; currently married; living with spouse, children, or kin; with good self-rated health; who regularly attended the YEP lessons and regularly self-practiced. Instructors' self-practice record was the strongest predictor of higher posttest scores. The YEP is an effective long-term prevention for sarcopenic older women.

RESUMO

There is a need to generate evidence on whether meditation's core aspect of building and nurturing calm and peace serves as a mood stabilizer for current and recurrent episodes of depression through the acute and maintenance phases of treating bipolar disorder II affected patients. A 2-year longitudinal multi-city randomized controlled trial experiment was conducted comprising 311 bipolar disorder II affected patients in the intervention and control group respectively across eight African and Asian cities. The Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) was administered with the intervention and control groups that were equal at baseline. Meditation had a positive impact on the intervention group. Post intervention BDRS scores were significantly lower for patients from Asian cities, men, Hindus and Buddhists, middle class, and married patients as well as those who attended all the meditation rounds and regularly self-practiced. Within the BDRS outcome measure, depressive symptoms were impacted the most as compared with mixed symptoms. Meditation helped alleviate guilt, depressed mood, and helplessness-hopelessness. The meditation programme can be used as a combination therapy along with pharmacological treatment to treat mood instability and depression among patients with bipolar disorder II.

RESUMO

This article reports on a multi-city two-year long experiment on the effect of a spiritual counseling program (SCP) on children diagnosed with anxiety disorders. The two-year customized SCP was conducted with 1238 children from 20 private schools in five cities across five countries, with an equal number in a control group. Results showed that post-treatment self-reported and counselor-tested anxiety outcome measure scores were lower for the treatment group. Girls, children from more affluent cities, middle-class children, and those who had one stay-at-home parent and no siblings showed reduced anxiety disorders post-treatment. Children who voluntarily attended more SCP rounds than those prescribed and those who regularly self-practiced also showed lower anxiety symptoms post-treatment. Child-focused spiritual counseling intervention comprising components of connection with God within, recognizing and annihilating fear through introspection and breath control, stilling, centering, and consciousness seemed effective. Socio-cultural factors, parental involvement, and child's own engagement with the treatment were significant determinants of effectiveness.

RESUMO

This article reports on a pre- and post-test experimental study with 4504 refugees in 38 camps across nine destination countries. The aim was to examine the role of spirituality and a specially designed spiritual education programme in promoting mental health of refugees. A pre- and post-test experimental design has been used with three scales to examine the outcome measures: (1) the trauma screening questionnaire (2) life orientation test-revised and (3) mental health inventory-38. Results showed that compared with pre-test scores, the average post-test scores of the refugees on the trauma questionnaire were lower, and higher on optimism measure, and mental health inventory. Voluntary participation, full attendance and self-practice willingness were favourable predictors of refugee mental health. Hierarchical regression model showed that self-practice willingness was the most important predictor of positive mental health of refugees. Findings make a case for interventions for refugees grounded in cultural competency and spirituality.
