The weights and dimensions of approximately 1400 normal human thyroid glands were taken at autopsy by the King County Medical Examiner's Office (Seattle, WA) over a two-year period ending in the spring of 1981. The values for thyroid gland weight observed in this data set were compared statistically with those presented by Mochizuki, Mowafy, and Pasternack (New York), with no significant difference being found between the two studies. The two data sets were combined and treated as one providing three distinct adult thyroid gland weights based on age and sex. Male thyroid glands in the age group 20-29 y showed an average of 16.4 g, males 30-69 y of age 18.5 g and females 20-69 y of age 14.4 g. These values are significantly lower than the 20-g (male) and 17-g (female) reference weights given in ICRP Publication 23.
