Introduction: Patients with neurodisabilities (NDS) are prone to alterations in body composition. Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a condition characterized by increased adipose tissue accompanied by sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SO in patients with NDS, including stroke, spinal cord, and traumatic brain injuries. Methods: The study Sarcopenic Obesity in NeuroDisabled Subjects (acronym: SarcObeNDS) was a cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients (n = 82) and healthy controls (n = 32) with a mean age of 60.00 ± 14.22 years old. SO and sarcopenia were assessed through total body fat % (TBF %), fat mass index (fat mass to height2: FMI = FM/h2; kg/m2), and skeletal muscle index (appendicular skeletal muscle to height2: SMI = ASM/h2; kg/m2) via full-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This study was registered in the international database ClinicalTrials.gov with the unique identification number NCT03863379. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in SMI (7.18 ± 0.95 vs. 6.00 ± 1.13 kg/m2, p < 0.001) between controls and patients with NDS. No statistical significance was found for TBF (p = 0.783) and FMI (p = 0.143) between groups. The results remained the same after controlling the results for gender and BMI. A strong positive correlation was demonstrated between BMI and TBF for the total population (r = 0.616, p < 0.001), the control group (r = 0.616, p < 0.001), and patients with NDS (r = 0.728, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In summary, we observed significantly lower BMI and SMI scores in both genders compared to healthy controls. At the clinical level, a timely diagnosis and rapid treatment of sarcopenia and/or obesity in this population may prevent further metabolic repercussions accompanied by higher functional decline and lower quality of life.

In the maritime field where biofouling has both economic and environmental impacts, in situ quantification methods of biofilm development are of outstanding importance. Indeed, it is challenging to temporally monitor biofilm formation due to the complexity of the marine ecosystem, common inaccessibility of sampling location and lack of standardized techniques. Here, an artificial polymeric surface was tested in situ and in vitro against natural phototrophic biofilms and monoculture biofilms using plate reader fluorescence. The suitability of the developed method was verified using fluorescence microscopy coupled with image analysis - a common quantification technique - demonstrating a strong correlation between the tested methods. The results indicated the efficiency of inherent chlorophyll fluorescence in quantifying undisturbed phototrophic biofilms in field and laboratory conditions using microplate reader. This work demonstrated that the suggested approach is promising for biofilm high-throughput testing, and therefore has the potential to be used in several research and industrial sectors for monitoring phototrophic biofilm development.

Marine biofouling imposes serious environmental and economic impacts on marine applications, especially in the shipping industry. To combat biofouling, protective coatings are applied on vessel hulls which are divided into two major groups: biocidal and non-toxic fouling release. The current study aimed to explore the effect of coating type on microbial biofilm community profiles to better understand the differences between the communities developed on fouling control biocidal antifouling and biocidal-free coatings. Biocidal (Intersmooth® 7460HS SPC), fouling release (Intersleek® 900), and inert surfaces were deployed in the marine environment for 4 months, and the biofilms that developed on these surfaces were investigated using Illumina NGS sequencing, targeting the prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene. The results confirmed differences in the community profiles between coating types. The biocidal coating supported communities dominated by Alphaproteobacteria (Loktanella, Sphingorhabdus, Erythrobacter) and Bacteroidetes (Gilvibacter), while other taxa, such as Portibacter and Sva0996 marine group, proliferated on the fouling-release surface. Knowledge of these marine biofilm components on fouling control coatings will serve as a guide for future investigations of marine microfouling as well as informing the coatings industry of potential microbial targets for robust coating formulations.

Von Hippel Lindau (VHL) is a hereditary multiple neoplasia syndrome. We report a case series of two siblings with Von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease admitted to the rehabilitation department after surgical excision of Central Nervous System (CNS) haemangioblastomas. These clinical cases present rehabilitation challenges in VHL disease. We present a 39-year-old brother and his 45-year-old sister, with the diagnosis of incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) associated with VHL syndrome lesions. The female patient was diagnosed with chronic motor incomplete cervical SCI and the male patient with acute motor incomplete thoracic SCI. Our target was to increase their functionality and improve their quality of life. Both underwent a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program. Programs were individualized as the female patient was admitted 15 years after her spinal cord surgical intervention, while the male patient's admission was after 4 months of his surgery.

Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by quantitative and qualitative degeneration of the skeletal muscles and it primarily presents with a decline in the muscle strength. It frequently occurs in patients after a cerebrovascular accident due to a combination of various factors, such as the brain injury, structural adaptations, limited physical activity as long as malnutrition. Most of the articles and reviews concerning stroke-related sarcopenia are limited and usually are discussing about the factors and causes that may lead to the muscle wasting and the particular characteristics that distinguish it from age-related sarcopenia. As a result, even though sarcopenia is described as a medical entity, it appears to lack the attention that requires, limiting the maximum therapeutic effect a patient can obtain. Suggestions have been made concerning general treatment and management of sarcopenia, associated with exercise, diet and the use of medical preparations, lacking though disease-specific guidelines for management, treatment and possibly prevention of stroke-related sarcopenia. Nowadays, it is considered of major importance that the medical community should be properly informed and to raise awareness on this particular issue aiming to a better and holistic management of the patients after a cerebrovascular accident, in order to reduce morbidity and disability that both are sequelae that reduce quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Low muscle function is a component of sarcopenia. Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases are related to increased muscle loss and decreased muscle performance. Our purpose was to study muscle function among pre and postmenopausal women and women with rheumatic diseases. METHODS: Two hundred fifty seven women were included in the study: Group POST OST included 61 osteoporotic postmenopausal women under treatment with osteoporotic drugs and calcium/vitamin D supplements (mean age 65±9.6 years), group POST HEALTH consisted of 117 healthy postmenopausal women (mean age 62.9±9.8 yrs), Group RHEUM included 20 women with rheumatic diseases (mean age 58.85±13yrs), and group PRE included 59 healthy premenopausal women (mean age 35±7.6 yrs). For the measurement of objective parameters of movement (Force, velocity, Power), we used the mechanography system in Leonardo platform (Novotec, Germany). Personal Power (Power/Weight) was also calculated. RESULTS: Height was decreased with age, while body mass index (BMI) and weight were significantly increased. In groups POST OST, POST HEALTH, RHEUM, all measured parameters were statistically decreased in comparison with group PRE. No statistical significance was found among POST HEALTH and POST OST women. CONCLUSIONS: Jumping mechanography can be proposed as a novel tool to assess physical performance in musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases. It offers to the clinician additional information, while quantitatively assesses muscle function, for assessing sarcopenia.

The amount of marine debris in the environment is increasing worldwide, which results in an array of negative effects to biota. This study provides the first account of macrodebris on the beach and microplastics in the sediment (shoreline and infralittoral) in relation to tourism activities in Slovenia. The study assessed the quality and quantity of macrodebris and the quality, size and quantity of microplastics at six beaches, contrasting those under the influences of tourism and those that were not. Beach cleanliness was estimated using the Clean Coast Index. Tourism did not seem to have an effect on macrodebris or microplastic quantity at beaches. Over 64% of macrodebris was plastic, and microplastics were ubiquitous, which calls for classification of plastics as hazardous materials. Standard measures for marine debris assessment are needed, especially in the form of an all-encompassing debris index. Recommendations for future assessments are provided for the Adriatic region.

RESUMO

Strain MOLA455 is a marine gammaproteobacterium isolated from the bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer, France. Here, we present its genome sequence and annotation. Genome analysis revealed the presence of genes associated with a possibly photoheterotrophic lifestyle that uses a proteorhodopsin protein.
