RESUMO

The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the prevalence of health-related quality of life and depressive symptomatology in high school students during the lockdown period due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with students attending the High School Education System of the University of Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. Through a Google Forms survey, students answered their perceptions of health-related quality of life and depressive symptomatology. The outcome variable was the presence of depressive symptoms, assessed using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.8 in both surveys. A total of 1446 students participated (women, 64.9%; mean age of 16.1 ± 0.9 years). Among the students, 22% manifested clinical depressive symptoms (24.4 ± 5.0), and males showed lower scores on health-related quality of life and depressive symptoms (44.9 ± 11.9, p = 0.005) (12 ± 7.7, p = <0.001) compared to their female peers (45.2 ± 10.6, p = 0.005) (13.7 ± 7.5, p = <0.001), respectively. During the lockdown due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a high prevalence of depressive symptomatology was identified in our students with in addition to a low perception of health-related quality of life in dimensions, mood and emotions, and peers and social support.

RESUMO

Population studies represent an integral part and link in understanding the complex chain of host-pathogen interactions, disease pathogenesis, and MHC gene polymorphisms. Genes of Mongoloid, Caucasoid, and Negroid populations have created a distinctive HLA genetic profile in the Venezuelan population. Our objective was to determine the predominant HLA class I and II alleles and haplotype frequencies in the hybrid population of Venezuela. The study population consisted of 486 healthy unrelated native Venezuelans and 180 families. We examined the frequency of HLA A-B-C, HLA-DQ and HLA-DR genes by polymerase chain reaction and subsequent hybridization with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes. Phenotypic, allelic and haplotype frequencies were estimated by direct counting and using the maximum-likelihood method. The predominant HLA class I alleles were A*02, A*24, A*68, B*35, B*44, B*51, B*07, B*15 and Cw*07. Regarding HLA class II, the most frequent alleles were DQB1*03 and DRB1*04, DRB1*15, DRB1*13, DRB1*07. The prevailing haplotype was HLA-A*02B*35 DQB1*03 DRB1*04. Some of these alleles and haplotype frequencies were predominantly present in Amerindians (A*02, A*24, B*35, Cw*07, DRB1*04, A*24 B*35). Previous reports have shown high incidence of A*02, B*44, B*51, DRB1*15, DRB1*13, DRB1*07 alleles in several European populations and A*68, B*07, B*15 alleles in African Americans, which could have contributed to the ethnic admixture of the Venezuelan population. We conclude that our results provide strong evidence that Venezuela's population represents an admixture of the primitive Mongoloid Aborigines, Caucasoid Europeans and Western African Negroid migrants.

RESUMO

The presence of microbial organisms in conjunctival secretions always raises the doubt of whether they are the result of contamination or a real infection. Culture records of conjunctival secretion from children, who attended the Laboratory of Microbiology of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud and the consulting roon of the Hospital de Clinícas from January 1990 to July 1992, were analyzed to determine the most frequent infectious agenis. The most commonly microorganism foud was Staphylococcus aureus (36.4 percent of the cases), followed by Streptococcus viridans (21.2 percent), Streptococcus pneumoniae (15 percent) pseudomonas aeruginosa (9 percent) and Neisseria gonorroheae (6 peecent). Nor Haemophilus influenzae neither fungi were detected

RESUMO

In order to determine the incidence and the etiology of the sexually trasnmitted diseaes (STD) 500 women, belonging to a high risk group (prostitutes), were studied from August, 1989 to Octuber 1990, and bacteriological and mycological studied were performed. Also, a questionnaire comprising detailed sexual behavior were rendered. High incidence of Gardnerella vaginalis (41.4 percent), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (12.2 percent), Trichomonas vaginalis (10.2 percent) and Candida albicans (10 percent) were found, in contrast with the low level found for Lactobacillus sp. The questinnaire revealed very low utilization of contraceptives as well as condom employement
