RESUMO

Background: Although severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination reduces the risk and severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), several variables may impact the humoral response among patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted among SARS-CoV-2-vaccinated HSCT recipients between 2020 and 2022 at a single center in Boston, Massachusetts. Patients age ≥18 years who received doses of Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J vaccines were included. Anti-spike (S) immunoglobulin G (IgG) titer levels were measured using the Roche assay. Responders (≥0.8 U/mL) and nonresponders (<0.8 U/mL) were categorized and analyzed. Multivariable linear and logistic regression were used to estimate the correlation coefficient and odds ratio of response magnitude and status. Results: Of 152 HSCT recipients, 141 (92.8%) were responders, with a median (interquartile range [IQR]) anti-S IgG titer of 2500 (107.9-2500) U/mL at a median (IQR) of 80.5 (36-153.5) days from last dose, regardless of the number of doses received. Higher quantitative titers were associated with receipt of more vaccine doses (coeff, 205.79; 95% CI, 30.10 to 381.47; P = .022), being female (coeff, 343.5; 95% CI, -682.6 to -4.4; P = .047), being younger (<65 years; coeff, 365.2; 95% CI, -711.3 to 19.1; P = .039), and not being on anti-CD20 therapy (coeff, -1163.7; 95% CI, -1717.7 to -609.7; P = .001). Being male (odds ratio [OR], 0.11; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.93; P = .04) and being on anti-CD20 therapy (OR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.03 to 0.70; P = .016) were associated with nonresponse. Conclusions: Overall, most HSCT recipients had high SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses. More vaccine doses improved the magnitude of immune responses. Anti-S IgG monitoring may be useful for identifying attenuated vaccine-induced responses.

RESUMO

Investigating molecules in the gas phase is the only way to discover their intrinsic molecular properties; however, it is challenging to produce the gaseous phase of large-molecule chemicals. Thermal evaporation is typically used to convert molecules into gases, but it is still challenging to study ionic molecules in solutions in the gas phase. Electrospray ionization is one of the best methods to generate molecules in the gas phase, and it is uniquely capable of studying large biomolecules, including proteins. However, the molecular temperature required to study the spectroscopic properties of the molecules is very high. In this study, we developed a new, simple evaporation method using an ultrasonic nebulizer to obtain gas-phase molecules. Using this new equipment, we observed OH- anions and their water clusters in the gas phase and obtained their photoelectron spectra. We observed that the vertical electron-detachment energy (VDE) of OH- was 1.90 ± 0.05 eV and the VDEs of its water clusters and OH- (H2O)n (n = 1-2) decreased to 1.50 ± 0.05 eV (n = 1) and 1.30 ± 0.05 eV (n = 2), respectively.

RESUMO

Nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) is the single basic moiety in N-doped graphene, the only metal-free catalyst reported to date to successfully produce the oxygen reduction reaction. N-doped graphene is quite promising as a material to increase the efficiency of oxygen reduction. In addition, it is known that when carbon dioxide is added to aza-benzene, there will be an associative chemical reaction upon electron attachment between the anionic nitrogen atoms in the aza-benzene and the carbon atom in the carbon dioxide; however, it has previously been reported that when there are more nitrogen atoms in the small aza-benzene moiety, the associative reaction does not always occur. In this study, we carried out a theoretical simulation to determine whether more electrons increase the CO2 reductive reactivity of the aza-naphthalene as a model system of a nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. We found that even though an associative chemical reaction between nitrogen atoms in the N-PAH and carbon atoms in carbon dioxide did not occur in anionic complexes of aza-naphthalene and carbon dioxide, chemical reactions did occur in all the nitrogen atoms of these complexes when we added an extra excess electron. Therefore, we conclude that the efficiency of CO2 reduction will be increased in nitrogen atoms when more electrons are added to increase their anionic properties.

RESUMO

This study examined the effects of additives to improve the COS absorption capacity of Cu-Al-based sorbents for the integrated gasification fuel cell (IGFC) process. To absorb a small amount of COS, an Al-based precursor was added to the precursor solution for Cu-Al-based sorbents because a high surface area absorber was required. Various transition metals (Zn, Fe, Mn) were used as additives to improve the stability of the Cu-Al-based absorbent. The changes in surface properties and sulfur absorption capacity of the Cu-Al-based absorbent were investigated according to the composition of transition metals. As a result of the sulfur absorption test, the difference in the sulfur absorption capacity of the Cu-based sorbents was confirmed depending on the type of additive, and changes in their surface area. Moreover, the pore characteristics were observed by the nitrogen adsorption method. Sorbents with high surface areas generally have high sulfur capacity, but the additive component has a strong effect. These results can be explained by the transition metal additive binding to Cu to form a composite metal oxide. Furthermore, manganese was found to be suitable for improving the stability and surface area of the copper-based absorbent.

RESUMO

In embryonic stem cells (ESCs), gene regulatory networks (GRNs) coordinate gene expression to maintain ESC identity; however, the complete repertoire of factors regulating the ESC state is not fully understood. Our previous temporal microarray analysis of ESC commitment identified the E3 ubiquitin ligase protein Makorin-1 (MKRN1) as a potential novel component of the ESC GRN. Here, using multilayered systems-level analyses, we compiled a MKRN1-centered interactome in undifferentiated ESCs at the proteomic and ribonomic level. Proteomic analyses in undifferentiated ESCs revealed that MKRN1 associates with RNA-binding proteins, and ensuing RIP-chip analysis determined that MKRN1 associates with mRNAs encoding functionally related proteins including proteins that function during cellular stress. Subsequent biological validation identified MKRN1 as a novel stress granule-resident protein, although MKRN1 is not required for stress granule formation, or survival of unstressed ESCs. Thus, our unbiased systems-level analyses support a role for the E3 ligase MKRN1 as a ribonucleoprotein within the ESC GRN.

RESUMO

A low-temperature solution-processed high-k gate dielectric layer for use in a high-performance solution-processed semiconducting polymer organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) was demonstrated. Photochemical activation of sol-gel-derived AlOx films under 150 °C permitted the formation of a dense film with low leakage and relatively high dielectric-permittivity characteristics, which are almost comparable to the results yielded by the conventionally used vacuum deposition and high temperature annealing method. Octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) treatment of the AlOx was employed in order to realize high-performance (>0.4 cm²/Vs saturation mobility) and low-operation-voltage (<5 V) diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based OTFTs on an ultra-thin polyimide film (3-µm thick). Thus, low-temperature photochemically-annealed solution-processed AlOx film with SAM layer is an attractive candidate as a dielectric-layer for use in high-performance organic TFTs operated at low voltages.

RESUMO

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the most effective therapies for unresectable hepatocelluar carcinoma or metastatic hypervascular tumors. Abscess occurring in the other organs beside the liver after TACE is a complication that often occurs, sometimes potentially fatal. We report a case of spinal epidural abscess occurred after liver abscess complicated by TACE in a patient with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors to the liver. A 67-year-old female underwent TACE first for the metastatic lesions to liver, with a history of pancreatoduodenectomy for the primary pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. Four days after TACE, sudden high fever occurred, and liver abscess was found on abdominal CT. Two days later, back pain and radiating pain to the right leg occurred, and lumbar spine MRI showed spinal epidural abscess. After intravenous antibiotics for 8 weeks and partial laminectomy, the patient recovered and was discharged without complications.

RESUMO

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign inflammatory vascular lesion, mainly found in the skin and oral mucosa. A few cases of pyogenic granuloma in the gastrointestinal tract have been reported, and the esophagus was the main site in these cases. These patients were diagnosed with pyogenic granuloma after they underwent upper endoscopy and biopsy. Endoscopic resection is a favorable treatment option for esophageal pyogenic granuloma. Recently, we observed characteristic endosonographic findings in two cases with esophageal pyogenic granuloma, which were then treated successfully by endoscopic resection.

RESUMO

We report a rare case of multidrug-resistant pulmonary and testicular tuberculosis (TB) in a 25-year-old immunocompetent patient. The patient was suspected to have a testicular cancer. He underwent radical orchiectomy, and surgical pathology revealed a granuloma containing acid-fast bacilli in the testis. Bronchial washing fluid culture grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol. To our knowledge, this patient represents the first case of testicular TB in multidrug-resistant pulmonary TB.

RESUMO

The authors evaluated the reducibility of cervical disk herniation at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging performed with the patient in cervical traction. After the acquisition of neutral-state images, cervical traction images were obtained in 29 patients and seven healthy volunteers while they wore a portable intermittent traction device. During traction, all volunteers and 21 patients had a substantial increase in the length of the cervical vertebral column. The disk herniation was completely resolved in three patients and partially reduced in 18. The reducibility of cervical disk herniation can be evaluated at MR imaging performed during cervical traction.
