RESUMO

In this manuscript, channel area fluctuation (CAF) effects on turn-on voltage (Von) and subthreshold swing (SS) in gate-all-around (GAA) nanowire (NW) tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) with multi-bridge-channel (MBC) have been investigated for the first time. These variations occur because oblique etching slope makes various elliptical-shaped channels in MBC-TFET. Since TFET is promising candidates to succeed metal-oxide-semiconductor FETs (MOSFET), these variation effects have been compared to MOSFET. Furthermore, Ge homojunction TFET, one of the solutions to increase on-state current in TFET and improve SS also has been simulated using technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulation. The results would be worth reference for future study about GAA NW TFETs.

RESUMO

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of calf muscle massage on ankle flexibility and balance. [Subjects and Methods] The study's subjects were 32 healthy college students, divided into two groups according to the massage methods applied. Both groups received five-minutes of massage to each calf, making a total of ten minutes. Massage group A received effleurage, tapotement and pressure, and massage group B received effleurage, friction and petrissage. The functional reaching test and the modified one leg standing test were performed to measure the flexibility and balance of the ankles both before and after the massage application. [Results] In the functional reaching test performed after the calf muscle massage intervention, both groups showed significant increases. However, no significant differences were found between the two groups. In the modified one leg standing test, massage group A showed a significant increase in flexibility and balance after the intervention only when the left foot was used for support. Massage group B showed a significant increase when each foot was used for support. A significant difference between the groups was only observed only when the left foot was used for support. [Conclusion] Calf muscle massage may be effective for enhancing the flexibility and balance function of the ankle joint. In particular, a combined application of friction and petrissage massage techniques may be more effective for increasing ankle joint flexibility. Therefore, the application of calf massage can be considered an appropriate method for improving balancing ability.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Few studies have measured the amount of indirect decompression at the contralateral neural foramen after unilateral-approach minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MITLIF). This study examined the amount of intraoperative indirect decompression at the contralateral neural foramen after a unilateral-approach MITLIF in patients with bilateral foraminal stenosis. METHODS: From February 2009 to October 2012, 66 consecutive patients with bilateral foraminal stenosis underwent unilateral-approach MITLIF and postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Direct decompression was performed at the central canal and approach-side neural foramen, while indirect decompression using cage distraction was pursued at the contralateral neural foramen. Qualitative parameters of the central canal (dural sac morphology) and neural foramen (foramen morphology) were analyzed using pre- and post-operative MRI. Quantitative measurement on the central canal (dural sac cross-sectional area) and neural foramen (foramen height and width) were also measured. RESULTS: A total of 69 intervertebral levels in the 66 patients were analyzed. Qualitative parameters of the central canal and contralateral neural foramen improved significantly after unilateral-approach MITLIF (both P < 0.001). The mean dural sac cross-sectional area increased from 51.1 ± 28.8 to 84.8 ± 30.2 mm(2) (P < 0.001). The mean preoperative contralateral foramen height, maximum foramen width, and minimum foramen width were 11.8 ± 2.0, 4.9 ± 1.5, and 1.5 ± 0.7 mm, respectively, and these values increased postoperatively to 14.7 ± 2.5, 6.5 ± 1.8, and 2.4 ± 1.0 mm, respectively (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Quantitative and qualitative parameters of the central canal and contralateral neural foramen increased significantly after unilateral-approach MITLIF.

RESUMO

We describe the case of a 76-year-old man presenting with a gas-filled intradural cyst that increased in size over a 10-month period and caused acute bilateral foot drop. The gas-filled intradural cyst was resected from the adherent cauda equina, and histopathological examination identified cystic tissue with degenerated fibrocartilage. Leg pain disappeared immediately following surgery, and the bilateral foot drop resolved within 8 months.
