RESUMO

Background and aims: Favourable clinical data were published on the efficacy of CT-P13, the first biosimilar of infliximab (IFX), in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, few studies have compared the effect on endoscopic healing (EH) and drug retention rate between the IFX originator and CT-P13. Therefore, we aimed to compare EH and the drug retention rate between the IFX originator and CT-P13. Methods: Children with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC)/IBD-unclassified (IBD-U) at 22 medical centers were enrolled, with a retrospective review conducted at 1-year and last follow-up. Clinical remission, EH and drug retention rate were evaluated. Results: We studied 416 pediatric patients with IBD: 77.4% had CD and 22.6% had UC/IBD-U. Among them, 255 (61.3%) received the IFX originator and 161 (38.7%) received CT-P13. No statistically significant differences were found between the IFX originator and CT-P13 in terms of corticosteroid-free remission and adverse events. At 1-year follow-up, EH rates were comparable between them (CD: P=0.902, UC: P=0.860). The estimated cumulative cessation rates were not significantly different between the two groups. In patients with CD, the drug retention rates were 66.1% in the IFX originator and 71.6% in the CT-P13 group at the maximum follow-up period (P >0.05). In patients with UC, the drug retention rates were 49.8% in the IFX originator and 56.3% in the CT-P13 group at the maximum follow-up period (P >0.05). Conclusions: The IFX originator and CT-P13 demonstrated comparable therapeutic response including EH, clinical remission, drug retention rate and safety in pediatric IBD.

RESUMO

This work aimed to identify the mechanisms by which taurine exerts its anti-obesity effects in the C57BL/6J ob/ob mice model and determine if taurine supplementation increases the amelioration of inflammation and lipogenesis linked genes in the adipose and liver tissues. Three groups of C57BL/6J mice were fed a standard chow diet for a period of 10 weeks the C57BL/6J normal group, the C57BL/6J ob/ob negative control group with no taurine intake and C57BL/6J ob/ob taurine group with taurine intake. Real time PCR was used to examine the gene expression profile in the experimental groups intrascapular brown adipose tissue (BAT), inguinal white adipose tissue (WAT) and liver. TNF-alpha, Ccl2, Adgre and illb genes that are associated with inflammation were found to have varying level of expression in the three tissues. In comparison to BAT and liver these genes were expressed at a much lower level in WAT, with enhanced serum adiponectin levels.

RESUMO

Since the majority of patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) develop insulin resistance and/or diabetes mellitus (DM) prior to PC diagnosis, PC-induced diabetes mellitus (PC-DM) has been a focus for a potential platform for PC detection. In previous studies, the PC-derived exosomes were shown to contain the mediators of PC-DM. In the present study, the response of normal pancreatic islet cells to the PC-derived exosomes was investigated to determine the potential biomarkers for PC-DM, and consequently, for PC. Specifically, changes in microRNA (miRNA) expression were evaluated. The miRNA specimens were prepared from the untreated islet cells as well as the islet cells treated with the PC-derived exosomes (from 50 patients) and the healthy-derived exosomes (from 50 individuals). The specimens were subjected to next-generation sequencing and bioinformatic analysis to determine the differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) only in the specimens treated with the PC-derived exosomes. Consequently, 24 candidate miRNA markers, including IRS1-modulating miRNAs such as hsa-miR-144-5p, hsa-miR-3148, and hsa-miR-3133, were proposed. The proposed miRNAs showed relevance to DM and/or insulin resistance in a literature review and pathway analysis, indicating a potential association with PC-DM. Due to the novel approach used in this study, additional evidence from future studies could corroborate the value of the miRNA markers discovered.

RESUMO

Plastics are the most abundant marine litter in the world's oceans and can be degraded into micro-plastics. These emerging pollutants negatively affect marine organisms, but little is known on the effects on macroalgae. In this study, we investigated the effects of micro-plastics on two species of red algae: Grateloupia turuturu and Chondrus sp. Grateloupia turuturu has a slippery surface while Chondrus sp. has a rough surface. Different surface characteristics of these macroalgae may affect adherence of micro-plastics. Both species were exposed to 5 different concentrations (0, 20, 200, 2000 and 20,000 ng/L) of polystyrene microspheres. Adherence capacity, accumulating micro-plastics on the surface was higher for Chondrus sp. than G. turuturu. Chondrus sp. at 20,000 ng/L only showed a decrease in growth rate and photosynthesis activity, and an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, G. turuturu was not significantly affected by micro-plastics at all tested concentrations. Shaded light and inhibition of gas flow by adhered micro-plastics may be a reason for the reduction of growth and photosynthesis and production of ROS. Based on this result, the toxic effects of micro-plastics appear to be species specific, dependent on the adherence capacity of macroalgae.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Estimation of energy demand using resting energy expenditure (REE) is a reasonable approach for optimizing glycemic control and weight management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to compare REE predictions and objective measurements in patients with T2DM in Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study enrolled 36 participants with T2DM (age range, 20-60 years). Anthropometric variables including height, weight, waist-hip ratio, blood pressure, body fat, body fat percentage, and total body weight were measured using bioimpedance. REE was evaluated using indirect calorimetry. The measured REE values were compared to values estimated using five predictive equations: the Harris-Benedict, Mifflin, Owen, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO), and Schofield equations. This study evaluated the associations between measured REE values and anthropometric/clinical data, including height, weight, and age, using multivariate linear regression. RESULTS: The mean measured REE value was 1891.79 ± 288.03 kcal/day (male), 1,502.00 ± 202.96 kcal/day (female). REE estimates generated from the Mifflin equation showed the largest differences from measured REE values, whereas estimates derived from the FAO/WHO equation were the closest to the measured REE values. This study also identified associations between measured REE values and various anthropometric/clinical variables. CONCLUSION: The accuracy of REE prediction equations is critically important in promoting the efficacy of dietary counseling and the effective treatment of diabetes. Our results indicate the need for additional studies informing more suitable methods for determining the energy requirements of Korean patients with T2DM.

RESUMO

The response of seaweeds to environmental stressors can be population-specific, and be related to the regime of their habitats. To explore the growth and physiological responses of Ulva prolifera, two strains of this alga (Korean and Chinese strains) were studied under an interaction of temperature (20 and 25 °C), nutrients (low nutrients: 50 µM of nitrate and 5 µM of phosphate; high nutrients: 500 µM of nitrate and 50 µM of phosphate) and salinity (20, 30 and 40 psu). The lowest growth rates of both strains were observed at 40 psu of salinity, independent of temperature and nutrient levels. At 20 °C and low nutrients condition, the carbon: nitrogen (C: N) ratio and growth rate in the Chinese strain were increased by 31.1% and 21.1% at a salinity of 20 psu in comparison to the salinity of 30 psu, respectively. High nutrients decreased the ratio of C:N in both strains with increasing tissue N content. At the same time, high nutrients also increased soluble protein and pigments contents, as well as photosynthetic and growth rates in both strains at the same salinity levels at 20 °C. Under 20 °C and high nutrients conditions, the growth rates and C:N ratio of both strains were significantly decreased with increasing salinity. The pigment, soluble protein and tissue N showed an inverse trend with the growth rate at all conditions. Moreover, the higher temperature of 25 °C inhibited the growth in both strains regardless of nutrients levels. The temperature of 25 °C enhanced the contents of tissue N and pigments in the Chinese strain only at the low nutrients level. The interaction of high nutrients and 25 °C led to the accumulation of tissue N and pigment contents in both strains under all salinity conditions compared to the 20 °C and high nutrients level. The temperature of 25 °C and high nutrients decreased the growth rate in the Chinese strain at both salinities of 30 and 40 psu more than the 20 °C, and low nutrients level at the same salinity. These results suggest that the Ulva blooms caused by the Chinese strain were more impacted at hypo-salinity levels compared to the Korean strain. Eutrophic or high nutrients level enhanced the salinity tolerance in both strains of U. prolifera. There will be a decline of U. prolifera blooms of the Chinese strain at hyper-salinity levels.

RESUMO

Background: To investigate the impact of nutritional iodine deficiency on thyroid dysfunction (TD) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, we analyzed the association between iodine-deficient parenteral nutrition (PN) and TD requiring L-thyroxine (TD-LT4). Methods: Data of VLBW infants were obtained from the Korean Neonatal Network registry. Factors including duration of PN were analyzed according to TD-LT4. Results: TD-LT4 occurred in 490 (8.7%) of 5635 infants, and more frequently occurred in infants requiring PN for ≥4 weeks (10.2%). PN ≥ 4 weeks was one of the risk factors for TD-LT4, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.346, p = 0.002. However, multivariate analysis showed that TD-LT4 was more of a risk for infants that were small for gestational age (OR 2.987, p < 0.001) and for other neonatal morbidities such as seizures (OR 1.787, p = 0.002) and persistent pulmonary hypertension (OR 1.501, p = 0.039) than PN ≥ 4 weeks (OR 0.791, p = 0.080). Conclusions: Prolonged iodine-deficient PN might affect TD-LT4 in VLBW infants. However, the effect of nutritional iodine deficiency on TD-LT4 risk was less than that of SGA or severe neonatal morbidities in Korean VLBW infants.

RESUMO

Sargassum horneri is a major bloom forming species in Korea and China. It is important to find a way to utilize the huge biomass of Sargassum horneri in the region. Seaweed-derived biostimulants are primarily derived from brown algae and are known to improve terrestrial crop growth and tolerance to abiotic stresses. Neopyropia yezoensis is the most important seaweed cultured species in Korea, and research is required to increase heat resistance as a solution against climate change. In this study, various extraction methods were used to obtain Sargassum horneri extract, and it was applied to Neopyropia yezoensis to evaluate the effect on physiological activity. Metabolites of Sargassum horneri were extracted by using four different methods: boiling (SBE), soaking (SSE), autoclaving (SAE) and ethanol (SEE). The SBE, SSE and SAE derived extracts showed increased tolerance to high-temperature stress that had inhibited the growth of Neopyropia yezoensis, and show improved growth compared to the control group. The SBE and SSE extraction methods improved the content of phycobiliprotein, but also the SBE increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Based on the results of this study, the boiling extraction method appears to be the most suitable method for the extraction of plants stimulants from Sargassum horneri.

RESUMO

Large-scale Sargassum blooms have been increasingly observed in coastal zones in recent years. Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh blooms (pelagic) have been observed in Jeju Island (Korea) and the southwest of the Korean Peninsula, causing serious problems for seaweed and abalone farms as well as for fisheries, tourism and recreational industries. The present study explored the physiological responses of attached and pelagic S. horneri populations cultivated under different nutrient concentrations (HN: 50 µM of nitrogen and 5 µM of phosphorus; LN: 5 µM of nitrogen and 0.5 µM of phosphorus) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (H-PAR: 250; M-PAR: 150; L-PAR: 50 µmol photons m-2 s-1) for 25 days. Relative growth rates (RGR) were significantly lower in the pelagic population than that in the attached population. All thalli from the pelagic population died within 20 days. Chlorophyll a and c, and carotenoids were significantly higher at HN than at LN, and decreased as PAR increased for both populations. For the attached population, photosynthetic rate, tissue nitrogen, and carbon and nitrogen removal were also significantly higher at HN than at LN. These results suggest that high nutrient and lower PAR increased the biomass accumulation of attached populations in coastal areas. Nutrient limitation and high PAR may accelerate senescence of the pelagic populations while traveling on the sea surface from their point of origin.

RESUMO

The distribution of differential extracellular matrix (ECM) in the lateral and medial menisci can contribute to knee instability, and changes in the meniscus tissue can lead to joint disease. Thus, deep proteomic identification of the lateral and medial meniscus cartilage is expected to provide important information for treatment and diagnosis of various knee joint diseases. We investigated the proteomic profiles of 12 lateral/medial meniscus pairs obtained from excess tissue of osteoarthritis patients who underwent knee arthroscopy surgery using mass spectrometry-based techniques and measured 75 ECM protein levels in the lesions using a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) assay we developed. A total of 906 meniscus proteins with a 1% false discovery rate (FDR) was identified through a tandem mass tag (TMT) analysis showing that the lateral and medial menisci had similar protein expression profiles. A total of 131 ECM-related proteins was included in meniscus tissues such as collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. Our data showed that 14 ECM protein levels were differentially expressed in lateral and medial lesions (p < 0.05). We present the proteomic characterization of meniscal tissue with mass spectrometry-based comparative proteomic analysis and developed an MRM-based assay of ECM proteins correlated with tissue regeneration. The mass spectrometry dataset has been deposited to the MassIVE repository with the dataset identifier MSV000087753.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Given that standardized language measures alone are inadequate for identifying functionally defined developmental language disorder (fDLD), this study investigated whether non-linguistic cognitive abilities (procedural learning, motor functions, executive attention, processing speed) can increase the prediction accuracy of fDLD in children in linguistically diverse settings. METHODS & PROCEDURES: We examined non-linguistic cognitive abilities in mono- and bilingual school-aged children (ages 8-12) with and without fDLD. Typically developing (TD) children (14 monolinguals, 12 bilinguals) and children with fDLD (28 monolinguals, 12 bilinguals) completed tasks measuring motor functions, procedural learning, executive attention and processing speed. Children were assigned as fDLD based on parental or professional concerns regarding children's daily language functioning. If no concerns were present, children were assigned as TD. Standardized English scores, non-verbal IQ scores and years of maternal education were also obtained. Likelihood ratios were used to examine how well each measure separated the fDLD versus TD groups. A binary logistic regression was used to test whether combined measures enhanced the prediction of identifying fDLD status. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: A combination of linguistic and non-linguistic measures provided the best distinction between fDLD and TD for both mono- and bilingual groups. For monolingual children, the combined measures include English language scores, functional motor abilities and processing speed, whereas for bilinguals, the combined measures include English language scores and procedural learning. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: A combination of non-linguistic and linguistic measures significantly improved the distinction between fDLD and TD for both mono- and bilingual groups. This study supports the possibility of using non-linguistic cognitive measures to identify fDLD in linguistically diverse settings. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Given that standardized English language measures may fail to identify functional language disorder, we examined whether supplementing English language measures with non-linguistic cognitive tasks could resolve the problem. Our study is based on the hypothesis that non-linguistic cognitive abilities contribute to language processing and learning. This is further supported by previous findings that children with language disorder exhibit non-linguistic cognitive deficits. What this paper adds to existing knowledge The results indicated that a combination of linguistic and non-linguistic cognitive abilities increased the prediction of functional language disorder in both mono- and bilingual children. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? This study supports the possibility of using non-linguistic cognitive measures to identify the risk of language disorder in linguistically diverse settings.

RESUMO

We developed and validated a quantification method for methotrexate (MTX) polyglutamates (MTX-PGs, MTX-PG1 to MTX-PG5) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using stable isotope-labeled internal standards and applied to 196 clinical samples collected from pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients treated with MTX. MTX-PGs levels and their proportions (%) in sum of all MTX-PGs (MTXSum) were evaluated in relation to TPMT, NUDT15, and MTHFR genotypes. For the developed method, linearity ranges 1-500 nmol/L, bias for accuracy 0.3-13.5 %, coefficient of variation for within- and between-run imprecision of 3.2-9.5% and 1.5-12.0%, respectively. Recoveries achieved were 74.2-105.8 %. There was no significant carryover. The median level of the MTXSum for 196 clinical samples was 129.4 nmol/L (interquartile range 28.1-241.2). MTX dose and MTX-PGs were associated (P < 0.05) and among five MTX-PGs, MTX-PG3 was the predominant form (median 41.7 %). The MTX-PG3 level was significantly higher in patients with TPMT *1/*3C than in patients with wild type and MTX-PG3% was significantly higher and MTX-PG5% was significantly lower in NUDT15 intermediate metabolizers than normal or indeterminate phenotypes (P < 0.05). This validated MTX-PGs quantification method can facilitate a better understanding of MTX metabolism and therapeutic drug monitoring for MTX treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with frequent hospitalizations, higher mortality, and healthcare costs. Low-income COPD patients have higher rates of emergency department visits and hospitalization due to COPD exacerbation. However, other causes of admissions and their economic burden have not been well-elucidated. METHODS: We analyzed the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) dataset for 2007-2015. The diagnosis and staging of COPD were based on the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines. RESULTS: Among the 97,622 participants in KNHANES for 2007-2015, we selected 33,963 participants (4,430 with and 29,533 without COPD) aged ≥40 years, who underwent spirometry, and provided the admission history for the previous year. Participants with COPD had a higher admission rate than those without COPD (12.8% vs. 10.4%, P<0.001). The admission rate increased as the stage of COPD advanced from GOLD 1 to GOLD 4 for total causes (11.5%, 13.6%, 15.1%, and 25.0%, respectively, P<0.001) and respiratory illnesses (0.5%, 1.3%, 4.6%, and 12.5%, respectively, P<0.001). The proportion of the lowest quartile household income increased in the late stages of COPD (GOLD 1-4; 35.2%, 32.1%, 44.9%, and 70.8%, respectively, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The hospitalization rate increased in advanced COPD, while GOLD stages 3 and 4 were associated with deterioration in economic status.

RESUMO

The multiple roles of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in pathogenesis have received much attention, as they are valuable as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. We employed polymeric EV precipitation to isolate EVs from clinical specimens to overcome the limitations of ultracentrifugation (UC), such as low protein yields, a large volume of specimens used, and time requirements. Multiple-cycle polymeric EV precipitation was applied to enhance the purity of the EV fractions with a small sample volume. Then, the purity was assessed using a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) panel consisting of alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M), thrombospondin 1 (THBS 1), galectin 3 binding protein (LGALS3BP), and serum albumin (ALB). For purity evaluation, the EV fractions isolated from blood specimens were subjected to shotgun proteomics and MRM-based targeted proteomics analyses. We demonstrate that the modified method is an easy and convenient method compared with UC. In the shotgun proteomics analysis, the proteome profile of EV fraction contains 89% EV-related proteins by matching with the EVpedia database. In conclusion, we suggest that multiple-cycle polymeric EV precipitation is not only a more effective method for EV isolation for further proteomics-based experiments, but may also be useful for further clinical applications due to the higher EV yield and low sample requirements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD), common mental disorder, lacks objective diagnostic and prognosis biomarkers. The objective of this study was to perform proteomic analysis to identify proteins with changed expression levels after antidepressant treatment and investigate differences in protein expression between MDD patients and healthy individuals. METHODS: A total of 111 proteins obtained from literature review were subjected to multiple reaction monitoring (MRM)-based protein quantitation. Finally, seven proteins were quantified for plasma specimens of 10 healthy controls and 78 MDD patients (those at baseline and at 6 weeks after antidepressant treatment of either selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or mirtazapine). RESULTS: Among 78 MDD patients, 35 patients were treated with SSRIs and 43 patients were treated with mirtazapine. Nineteen (54.3%) and 16 (37.2%) patients responded to SSRIs and mirtazapine, respectively. Comparing MDD patients with healthy individuals, alteration of transthyretin was observed in MDD (P = 0.026). A few differences were observed in protein levels related to SSRIs treatment, although they were not statistically significant. Plasma thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) was different between before and after mirtazapine treatment only in responders (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: In proteomic analysis of plasma specimens from MDD patients, transthyretin and TBG levels were altered in MDD and changed after antidepressant treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: E-cigarettes are steadily gaining popularity in Korea. However, the characteristics of e-cigarette smokers, especially nicotine dependence and stress susceptibility, have not been evaluated in comparison to those of non-smokers or combustible cigarette smokers in Korea. METHODS: In this study, 28,059 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2017) were classified into the following three groups: non-smokers, smokers (current smokers and ex-smokers of combustible cigarettes only), and e-smokers (current smokers and ex-smokers of e-cigarettes regardless of combustible cigarette use). RESULTS: Among the participants, 16,980 (60.5%), 9,247 (33.0%), and 1,832 (6.4%) subjects were non-smokers, smokers, and e-smokers, respectively. E-smokers were younger, more educated, and had a higher household income than non-smokers or smokers. The number of e-smokers who smoked within 5 minutes of waking up (31.5% vs. 19.8%, p<0.001) and who planned to quit smoking within 6 months (39.1% vs. 35.7%, p<0.05) was greater than that of smokers. E-smokers perceived stress as "very much" (7.0% vs. 4.4%, p<0.001) and "a lot" (29.1% vs. 20.5%, p<0.001) compared to non-smokers. Suicidal ideation (6.5% vs. 4.7%, p<0.001), plans (2.4% vs. 1.3%, p<0.001), and attempts (1.1% vs. 0.5%, p<0.001) were higher in e-smokers than in non-smokers. Depressive episodes in 1 year (14.2% vs. 11.4%, p<0.05) and suicidal plans (2.4% vs. 1.8%, p<0.05) were more frequent among e-smokers than among smokers. CONCLUSION: E-smokers were younger, more educated, and had a higher income, but they were more dependent on nicotine and susceptible to stress than non-smokers and smokers. Smoking cessation counseling should be tailored according to the characteristics of e-smokers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We developed an assay to measure DNA-incorporated 6-thioguanine (DNA-TG) and validated its clinical applicability in Korean pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in order to improve individualized thiopurine treatment and reduce the life-threatening cytotoxicity. METHODS: The DNA-TG assay was developed based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, with isotope-labeled TG-d3 and guanine-d3 as internal standards. This method was applied to 257 samples of pediatric ALL patients. The DNA-TG level was compared with erythrocyte TG nucleotide (RBC-TGN) level in relation to the TPMT and NUDT15 genotypes, which affect thiopurine metabolism, using Spearman's rank test and repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: For DNA-TG quantification, a linearity range of 10.0-5,000.0 fmol TG/µg DNA; bias for accuracy of -10.4% -3.5%; coefficient of variation for intra- and inter-day precision of 3.4% and 5.8% at 80 fmol TG/µg DNA and of 4.9% and 5.3% at 800 fmol TG/µg DNA, respectively; and recovery of 85.7%-116.2% were achieved without matrix effects or carry-over. The median DNA-TG level in the 257 samples was 106.0 fmol TG/µg DNA (interquartile range, 75.8-150.9). There was a strong correlation between DNA-TG and RBC-TGN levels (ρ=0.68, P<0.0001). The DNA-TG/RBC-TGN ratio was significantly higher in NUDT15 intermediate metabolizers (*1/*2 and *1/*3) than in patients with wild-type alleles (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: This simple and sensitive method for measuring DNA-TG level can improve therapeutic drug monitoring for thiopurine treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The 2016 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)/European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) task force for Sepsis-3 devised new definitions for sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction and septic shock. Although Sepsis-3 was data-driven, evidence-based approach, East Asian descents comprised minor portions of the project population. METHODS: We selected Korean participants from the fever and antipyretics in critically ill patients evaluation (FACE) study, a joint study between Korea and Japan. We calculated the concordance rates for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria and evaluated mortality rates of sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction, and septic shock by Sepsis-3 criteria using the selected data. RESULTS: Korean participants of the FACE study were 913 (383 with sepsis and 530 without sepsis by Sepsis-2 criteria). The concordance rate for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria was 55.4%. The intensive care unit (ICU) and 28-day mortality rates of sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction, and septic shock patients according to Sepsis-3 criteria were 26.2% and 31.0%, 27.5% and 32.5%, and 40.8% and 43.4%, respectively. The quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) was inferior not only to SOFA but also to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) for predicting ICU and 28-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The concordance rates for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria were low. Mortality rate for septic shock in Koreans was consistent with estimates made by the 2016 SCCM/ESICM task force. SOFA and SIRS were better than qSOFA for predicting ICU and 28-day mortality in Korean ICU patients.

RESUMO

Purpose The aim of the current study was to investigate whether dual language experience modulates the efficiency of the 3 attentional networks (alerting, orienting, and executive control) in typically developing (TD) children and in children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Method We examined the attentional networks in monolingual and bilingual school-aged children (ages 8-12 years) with and without DLD. TD children (35 monolinguals, 23 bilinguals) and children with DLD (17 monolinguals, 9 bilinguals) completed the Attention Network Test (Fan et al., 2002; Fan, McCandliss, Fossella, Flombaum, & Posner, 2005). Results Children with DLD exhibited poorer executive control than TD children, but executive control was not modified by bilingual experience. The bilingual group with DLD and both TD groups exhibited an orienting effect, but the monolingual group with DLD did not. No group differences were found for alerting. Conclusions Children with DLD have weak executive control skills. These skills are minimally influenced by dual language experience, at least in this age range. A potential bilingual advantage in orienting may be present in the DLD group.
