RESUMO

Reflection-type photoplethysmography (PPG) pulse sensors used in wearable smart watches, true wireless stereo, etc., have been recently considered a key component for monitoring biological signals such as heart rate, SPO3, and blood pressure. Typically, the optical front end (OFE) of these PPG sensors is heterogeneously configured and packaged with light sources and receiver chips. In this paper, a novel quarter-annulus photodetector (NQAPD) with identical inner and outer radii of curvature has been developed using a plasma dicing process to realize a ring-type OFE receiver, which maximizes manufacturing efficiency and increases the detector collection area by 36.7% compared to the rectangular PD. The fabricated NQAPD exhibits a high quantum efficiency of over 90% in the wavelength of 500 nm to 740 nm and the highest quantum efficiency of 95% with a responsivity of 0.41 A/W at the wavelength of 530 nm. Also, the NQAPD is shown to increase the SNR of the PPG signal by 5 to 7.6 dB compared to the eight rectangular PDs. Thus, reflective PPG sensors constructed with NQAPD can be applied to various wearable devices requiring low power consumption, high performance, and cost-effectiveness.

RESUMO

In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel interposer channel structure with vertical tabbed vias to achieve high-speed signaling and low-power consumption in high-bandwidth memory (HBM). An analytical model of the self- and mutual capacitance of the proposed interposer channel is suggested and verified based on a 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulation. We thoroughly analyzed the electrical characteristics of the novel interposer channel considering various design parameters, such as the height and pitch of the vertical tabbed via and the gap of the vertical channel. Based on the frequency-dependent lumped circuit resistance, inductance, and capacitance, we analyzed the channel characteristics of the proposed interposer channel. In terms of impedance, insertion loss, and far-end crosstalk, we analyzed how much the proposed interposer channel improved the signal integrity characteristics compared to a conventional structure consisting of micro-strip and strip lines together. Compared to the conventional worst case, which is the strip line, the eye-width, the eye-height, and eye-jitter of the proposed interposer channel were improved by 17.6%, 29%, and 9.56%, respectively, at 8 Gbps. The proposed interposer channel can reduce dynamic power consumption by about 28% compared with the conventional interposer channel by minimizing the self-capacitance of the off-chip channel.

RESUMO

An acoustic matching layer is an essential component of an ultrasound transducer to achieve maximum ultrasound transmission efficiency. Here, we develop a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) with a composite structure consisting of multiple polyimide and copper layers and demonstrate it as a novel acoustic matching layer. With a flexible substrate and robust ACF bonding, the FPCB not only serves as an acoustic matching layer between piezoelectric elements and the surrounding medium but also as a ground for the electrical connection between the transducer array elements and the folded substrate. A 1D linear ultrasound transducer array with the FPCB matching layer exhibits larger output pressure, wider -3dB bandwidth, and higher ultrasound beam intensity compared to that of an ultrasound transducer array with the alumina/epoxy matching layer, which is one of the most commonly applied composite matching layers. The enhanced transmission performance verifies that the proposed FPCB is an excellent matching layer for 1D linear ultrasound transducer arrays.

RESUMO

We present a parameter set for obtaining the maximum number of atoms in a grating magneto-optical trap (gMOT) by employing a machine learning algorithm. In the multi-dimensional parameter space, which imposes a challenge for global optimization, the atom number is efficiently modeled via Bayesian optimization with the evaluation of the trap performance given by a Monte-Carlo simulation. Modeling gMOTs for six representative atomic species - 7Li, 23Na, 87Rb, 88Sr, 133Cs, 174Yb - allows us to discover that the optimal grating reflectivity is consistently higher than a simple estimation based on balanced optical molasses. Our algorithm also yields the optimal diffraction angle which is independent of the beam waist. The validity of the optimal parameter set for the case of 87Rb is experimentally verified using a set of grating chips with different reflectivities and diffraction angles.

RESUMO

To realize high-resolution thermal images with high quality, it is essential to improve the noise characteristics of the widely adopted uncooled microbolometers. In this work, we applied the post-metal annealing (PMA) process under the condition of deuterium forming gas, at 10 atm and 300 °C for 30 min, to reduce the noise level of amorphous-Si microbolometers. Here, the DC and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) measurements of the devices as well as 1/f noise analysis were performed before and after the PMA treatment, while changing the width of the resistance layer of the microbolometers with 35 µm or 12 µm pixel. As a result, the microbolometers treated by the PMA process show the decrease in resistance by about 60% and the increase in TCR value up to 48.2% at 10 Hz, as compared to the reference device. Moreover, it is observed that the noise characteristics are improved in inverse proportion to the width of the resistance layer. This improvement is attributed to the cured poly-silicon grain boundary through the hydrogen passivation by heat and deuterium atoms applied during the PMA, which leads to the uniform current path inside the pixel.

RESUMO

Randomly distributed plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with various sizes were fabricated by a reflow process to an island-shaped Ag thin-film deposited on a Si photodiode. These NPs conformally enclosed by an antireflective (AR)-type SiNx/SiO2 bilayer reveal significantly diminished reflectance in a broad wavelength (500 nm - 1100 nm) as compared to the cases of Ag NPs or SiO2 layer enclosing Ag NPs on the Si substrate. Accordingly, the forward scattering and the total reflection along with wide-angle interference in between the dielectric bilayer incorporating the Ag NPs induce highly increased light absorption in the Si substrate. The fabricated Si photodiode adopting the plasmonic AR bilayer shows the responsivity peak value of 0.72 A/W at 835 nm wavelength and significant responsivity enhancement up to 40% relative to a bare Si photodiode in a wavelength range of 500 nm to 1000 nm.

RESUMO

We report a chip-scale atomic magnetometer based on coherent population trapping, which can operate near zero magnetic field. By exploiting the asymmetric population among magnetic sublevels in the hyperfine ground state of cesium, we observe that the resonance signal acquires sensitivity to magnetic field in spite of degeneracy. A dispersive signal for magnetic field discrimination is obtained near-zero-field as well as for finite fields (tens of micro-tesla) in a chip-scale device of 0.94 cm3 volume. This shows that it can be readily used in low magnetic field environments, which have been inaccessible so far in miniaturized atomic magnetometers based on coherent population trapping. The measured noise floor of 300 pT/Hz1/2 at the zero-field condition is comparable to that of the conventional finite-field measurement obtained under the same conditions. This work suggests a way to implement integrated atomic magnetometers with a wide operating range.

RESUMO

Acoustic matching layer films (MLFs) were fabricated using B-stage thermosetting polymer resins with various volume fractions of alumina and tungsten powders. After making certain thickness MLFs, ultrasonic matching layers were fabricated using a simple molding process. The thickness of the matching layers can be precisely adjusted from several micrometer to hundreds of micrometer, without any grinding process. Experimental values of acoustic impedances of the matching layers were in good agreement with theoretical values calculated by the Devaney model. Using the optimized acoustic matching layer by the MLFs, the maximum intensity and the fractional bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer were increased by 10% and 37% respectively. The effectiveness of the matching layer using MLFs was successfully verified.

RESUMO

Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC), a rare tumor in the head and neck region, displays comparable properties with other tumors clinically and pathologically. In consequence, an incorrect diagnosis may be established. A 51-year-old male patient who was admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Pusan National University Dental Hospital was initially diagnosed with ameloblastoma via incisional biopsy. However, the excised mass of the patient was observed to manifest histopathological characteristics of ameloblastic carcinoma. The lesion was ultimately diagnosed as clear cell odontogenic carcinoma by the Department of Oral Pathology of Pusan National Dental University. Therefore, segmental mandibulectomy and bilateral neck dissection were performed, followed by reconstruction with fibula free flap and reconstruction plate. Concomitant chemotherapy radiotherapy was not necessary. The patient has been followed up, and no recurrence has occurred 6 months after surgery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of orthognathic surgery with intended manual condylar positioning on condyle by examining a change in its position. METHOD: About 18 patients with mandibular prognathism who underwent orthognathic surgery with intentional manual condyle positioning were included. Condyle displacement was analyzed through 3D cone-beam computed tomography before and after operation. The patients were categorized into 2 experimental groups: group A (1-jaw) and group B (2-jaw). The experimental groups were examined before surgery (T0), 3 days (T1), and 6 months (T2) after surgery. Condylar displacement direction was investigated in terms of bodily shift and rotational movement. RESULTS: Downward bodily shift of condyle after surgery was significantly apparent from all of the patients. Condylar bodily shift in other directions was statistically insignificant. Gross bodily shift of condyle right after surgery was anterolateral-inferior direction. In perspective of rotational movement, condyle rotated in infero-medial direction right after operation, but no significant change was presented afterwards. In addition, no significant difference in the amounts of condylar shift and pattern existed between groups A and B. CONCLUSION: Intended manual condylar positioning may minimize postoperative displacement of condyle while accomplishing skeletal stability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purposes of the present study were to compare implant stabilities of mandibular block bone graft and bovine bone graft and to evaluate influencing factors for implant stability in mandibular block bone (MBB) graft. METHODS: This retrospective study investigated 1224 cases and 389 patients treated by one surgeon in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Pusan National University Dental Hospital (Yangsan, Korea) between January 2010 and December 2014. Proportions that MBB graft cases constitute in all implant restoration cases and in all bone graft cases were measured. Implant stability quotient (ISQ) values were achieved by the same surgeon before loading. The average ISQ values of the experimental groups were compared. In addition, ISQ values of influencing factors, such as age, sex, implant size, and implant placement site, were compared within the MBB group using OsstellTM Mentor (Osstell®, Göteborg, Sweden). Paired t test and ANOVA were conducted for statistical analysis with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: Fifty-five percent of all implant restoration cases performed bone graft while MBB cases constituted 34% of all implant restoration cases and 61% of all bone graft cases. Comparing ISQ values according to bone graft materials, the MBB group manifested sufficient implant stability by presenting comparable ISQ value to that of the experimental group without bone graft. Among the reviewed factors, females, mandibular molar regions, and implants in larger diameter displayed greater implant stabilities. CONCLUSIONS: Satisfactory implant stability was accomplished upon administration of MBB graft. Within the limitation of this study, gender, implant site, and implant diameter were speculated to influence on implant stability in MBB graft.

RESUMO

A piezoelectric vibration energy harvester with interdigital shaped cantilever was developed by using silicon bulk micromachining technology. The proposed energy harvester was designed to obtain multi degree-of-freedom (m-DOF). Most of the piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters are comprised of mass-loaded cantilever beams having several resonant frequencies. The second resonant frequency of such a device has lower amplitude compared to its first resonant frequency (fundamental frequency). Therefore, the interdigital shaped cantilever has been proposed for multiple fundamental resonant frequencies. The fabricated piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is composed of main cantilever (MC), sub-main cantilever (SMC), and secondary cantilevers (SC). MC surrounds SMC and SC which have same dimension of 5600 x 800 x 10 µm3. The fabricated piezoelectric energy harvester can generate 51.4 mV(p-p) and 11 mV(p-p) of output voltages at 24.2 Hz and 33 Hz of its resonant frequencies by MC. Moreover, it can generate 8 mV(p-p) and 6.6 mV(p-p) of output voltages at 24.2 Hz and 33.2 Hz of its resonant frequencies by SMC; and 364 mV(p-p) of output voltage at 33.6 Hz of its resonant frequency by SC.

RESUMO

A piezoelectric vibration energy harvester with inter-digital IrO(x) electrode was developed by using silicon bulk micromachining technology. Most PZT cantilever based energy harvesters have utilized platinum electrode material. However, the PZT fatigue characteristics and adhesion/delamination problems caused by the platinum electrode might be serious problem in reliability of energy harvester. To address these problems, the iridium oxide was newly applied. The proposed energy harvester was comprised of bulk micromachined silicon cantilever with 800 x 1000 x 20 microm3, which having a silicon supporting membrane, sol-gel-spin coated Pb(Zr52, Ti48)O3 thin film, and sputtered inter-digitally shaped IrO(x) electrodes, and silicon inertial mass with 1000 x 1000 x 500 microm3 to adjust its resonant frequency. The fabricated energy harvester generated 1 microW of electrical power to 470 komega of load resistance and 1.4 V(peak-to-peak) from a vibration of 0.4 g at 1.475 kHz. The corresponding power density was 6.25 mW x cm(-3) x g(-2). As expected, its electrical failure was significantly improved.

RESUMO

In this paper, we report the development of an optical sensor network (OSN) based on piezoelectrically actuated corner cube retroreflectors (PA-CCRs). PA-CCRs were fabricated by microelectromechanical systems processes and assembled by aligning horizontally actuated mirrors and vertical side walls in a holder, which allows mass production. Fabricated PA-CCRs showed a tilting angle by more than 1.5 deg at 5 V bias voltage. A 3 dB cutoff frequency was measured to be in the range of 3.5 kHz. To show the feasilbility, an OSN was established based on fabricated PA-CCRs for on-off keying passive transmission links. The results demonstrated data transmission at a rate up to 5 kb/s.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for decortication or debridement in the management of empyema thoracis has increased the available treatment options but requires validation. We present and evaluate our technique and experience with thoracoscopic management of pleural empyema, irrespective of chronicity. METHODS: From May 1, 2000, to April 30, 2002, VATS debridement and decortication in 70 consecutive patients presenting with pleural space infections was performed with endoscopic shaver system. A retrospective review was performed and the effect of this technique on perioperative outcome was assessed. RESULTS: The VATS evacuation of infected pleural fluid and decortication was successfully performed in 65 of 70 patients. The mean duration of preoperative symptoms before referral was 23 +/- 1.8 days. The mean duration of hospitalization before transfer was 13.5 +/- 1.5 days. Blood loss was 330 +/- 200 mL. Intercostal drainage was required for 5 +/- 3 days. The postoperative hospital stay was 5 +/- 0.7 days. There were no operative mortalities. CONCLUSIONS: Video-assisted thoracoscopic decortication with endoshaver system is a simple and effective method in the management of the fibropurulent or organic pleural empyema.
