In this study, a strain gauge sensor based on a change of contact or network structure between conductive materials was implemented using the handle-machine embroidery technique, and the variables (embroidery shape, embroidery distance, embroidery size, and implementation location) affecting its performance were studied. As a result of Experiment I on the structure of embroidery suitable for joint motion monitoring, the embroidery distance, rather than the embroidery size, was found to have a significant effect on the electric resistance changes caused by elongation. Based on the results of Experiment I, two types of zigzag embroideries, four types of embroideries with few contact points, and two types of embroideries with more contact points (all with short distances (2.0)) were selected for Experiment II (the dummy motion experiment). As a result of the dummy motion experiment, it was found that the locations of the suitable embroidered sensors for joint motion monitoring was the HJP (Hinge Joint Position) in the 'types without a contact point' (zigzag) and the LHJP (Lower Hinge Joint Position) in the 'types with more contact points'. On the other hand, although there was no consistency among the 'types with few contact points', the resistance changes measured by the 2CP and 7CP embroidered sensors showed similar figures and patterns, and the HJP location was most suitable. The resistance changes measured by the 4CP and 6CP embroidered sensors exhibited no consistent patterns, but the LHJP locations were more suitable. These results indicate that the location of the HJP is suitable for measuring joint motion in the 'type without a contact point', and the location of the LHJP is suitable for measuring joint motion when the number of contact points exceeds a certain limit. Among them, the average resistance change of the 9CP sensor located at the LHJP was 40 Ω with the smallest standard deviation of less than 1, and it is thus considered to have the best performance among all the sensors.

RESUMO

The primo vascular system (PVS), which is the proposed conduit for the acupuncture Qi, is a complex network distributed throughout an animal's body. However, even with a microscope, it is not easily detectable because of its transparency. Thus, its existence is largely unknown in current anatomy. A convincing demonstration of its existence is needed. The lymph-primo vessel (PV), which is a subsystem of the PVS, is a very effective visual demonstration of the PVS. The lymph-PVS is a mobile threadlike structure floating in lymph ducts that has been observed in rabbits, rats, and mice by several independent teams. The involved techniques are novel and rather complicated; therefore, we have already provided detailed protocols for the surgery; for the injection of the staining dye; and for the detection, extraction, and identification of the PVS in rabbits and rats. However, the mouse is one of the most important laboratory animals used for various biomedical research purposes. For the convenience of researchers who wish to initiate the PVS experiments in mice, we provide a shortened version of the protocol, despite many similarities with previously published protocols. Thus, researcher can easily obtain the samples of the lymph-PVS of mice.

The primo vascular system (PVS) floating in lymph fluid has mostly been observed in large caliber ducts around the caudal vena cava and the thoracic duct of rabbits, rats, and mice. But the PVS has not been traced up to the lymph nodes. It has not been established whether the PVS leaves the lymph vessel through the lymph vessel wall or it enters the lymph nodes. Therefore, observing the PVS entering a lymph node, for example, the axillary node, is desirable. In the current work, we traced the PVS approaching up to the surface of axillary node of a rat. The method used for this study was based upon a method that was recently developed to detect the PVS in the lymph duct from the inguinal to the axillary nodes in the skin of a rat by injecting Alcian blue into the inguinal node. However, the Alcian blue blurred near the lymph nodes and tracing the PVS up to the lymph nodes has not been possible. The current method clearly showed the PVS approaching the axillary node.

Phytolacca americana L. is a large semi-succulent herbaceous plant which reaches three meters in height. It is native to eastern North America, the Midwest, and the Gulf Coast, with more scattered populations in the far West. It is imported into Korea and has been frequently used as a traditional natural drug for diseases such as systemic edema and nephritis. Its berries, that is, fruits are shiny dark purple held in racemous clusters on pink pedicels with a pink peduncle. They are round with a flat indented top and bottom. Immature berries are green, maturing into white and then blackish purple. It is not well known how the berries are used for a natural staining yet. In this study, using Phytolacca americana L.-berries, a natural staining was analyzed. Moreover, due to the broad use of chemical mordants, five different mordants including copper acetate, aluminum potassium sulfate, sodium tartrate plus citric acid, Iron II sulfate and potassium dichromate were combined. Extracted dye from the berries stained silk fabrics with ivory. The original purple color from the berries disappeared and transformed into ivory. Although the silk fabrics were differentially stained by the berries that were combined with mordants of aluminum potassium sulfate, sodium tartrate plus citric acid and potassium dichromate, only differences in lightness and darkness were observed. Interestingly, the combination of the dye from the berries with a mordant of copper acetate and Iron II sulfate induced the staining of the silk fabrics into khaki and dark khaki, respectively. This study is the first systemic report on staining silk fabrics with Phytolacca americana L.-berries and chemical mordants and suggests application of natural products to the fiber industry.
