RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Health-related information should be tailored to patients' needs and requirements. Interactive features are required to allow refinement of information and feedback. METHODS: A voluntary questionnaire was set up at to allow feedback from patients and website visitors. RESULTS: A total of 1089 questionnaires were completed between Aug 2000 and Oct 2001. 77% (n = 799) had used the Internet previously to look up health-related information. With regard to the reasons visiting the site, 51% (n = 351) women indicated a recent breast problem while 26% (n = 267) had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. The most popular information types were benign disease (64%), malignant disease (62%) information on the current research field (67%), a discussion group (57%), operation details (53%), online consultations (62%), and the location of local clinics (57%). CONCLUSIONS: An interactive feedback questionnaire is a useful way to ensure that health-related internet sites are tailored to their users' needs.

RESUMO

A rapid and simple HPLC assay has been developed to separate and quantify N-acyl glutamates and the corresponding carboxylic acids of the acyl moiety. This method was specifically developed to assay hydrolytic activity for glutamate carboxypeptidases. Although established assays for specific substrates of such enzymes exist, they may not be amenable for examining the hydrolytic activity of new substrate probes. This assay was developed to accommodate such probes.

RESUMO

Exposition of one case of fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter in a young male patient. The interest of the case lies in the rarity of this entity. Review of all likely etiologies, clinical presentations and differential diagnosis, mainly with malignant tumours whose prognosis and treatment are entirely different. Endoscopic approach and surgical removal of the polyp and its base are the therapeutical choice for this type of neoformations.

RESUMO

The postmortem anatomopathological examination of eight heart-and-lung specimens obtained from eight HIV-seropositive patients was performed. Three patients were CDC stage II and five patients were CDC stage IV. The mean age was 27 (range: 23-32). Distal and proximal vascular lesions of the coronary arteries were observed. These impairments were marked by major excentric atherosclerosis (with 80-90% obstruction of the arterial lumen) or by fibrosis two-fold or six-fold the thickness of the tunica media. Sclero-hyalinosis of the smaller arteries and myocardial interstitial fibrosis lesions was also revealed. In view of the severity of the described lesions, the absence of any associated cardiovascular risk factors and the context of immunodepression, the role of a virus in the genesis of these lesions is suggested, in particular a virus of the herpes group.

RESUMO

A totally implanted intravenous catheter (TIVAC) was placed via the subclavian vein in a 32-year-old male patient with HIV infection for intermittent drug therapy. 8 months after insertion, a catheter fracture was noted with embolisation of the distal part into the heart. This accident was related to shoulder trauma with a downward movement of the clavicle. In active patients alternatives to the subclavian approach for TIVAC need to be considered.

RESUMO

We report a case of acute regressive meningoradiculitis concomitant with HIV1 primoinfection. The clinical symptoms were mild and disappeared spontaneously. Electromyographic studies confirmed the regressive demyelinating-type process. The biological diagnosis of HIV1 infection was demonstrated by viral antigen detection, by the presence of the integrated proviral DNA after gene amplification by a polymerase chain reaction, and in particular, by the steady progression in the appearance of different HIV1-specific antibodies. This was shown using three different Western blot kits whose performances were compared.

RESUMO

We herein present the results of our first 100 kidney transplants. The 1-year patient and graft survivals were 94 and 74 per cent, respectively, for living related grafts, and 85 and 57 per cent, respectively, for cadaver grafts. These results compare favorably to the recent standards set by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Standards Committee (95.1, 78.6, 88.6 and 55 per cent). Initial hospitalization averaged 21 plus or minus 7 days, while hospitalization during the first year after transplantation averaged 35 plus or minus 21 days. Average expenses (Medicare reimbursed) during the first 12 months after kidney placement were $29,572 plus or minus $6,468 for 15 successive patients. A total of 22 complications occurred within 1 year of transplantation and 11 required surgical management. Of 24 patients who survived 1 year with loss of graft function 15 (62 per cent) required transplant nephrectomy. Causes of death and types of complications are presented. Our results suggest that high quality kidney transplantation may be available to patients in small transplant centers.
