It has been demonstrated that universal hearing neonatal screening (UHNS) is efficient at providing early diagnosis and rehabilitation for deafness. The risk factors of deafness in children have been identified, but less specifically in those diagnosed after UHNS. In this study, we aim to study these factors in infants who were referred after screening and to compare our experience to recent data. We studied infants referred to our department for diagnosis after screening between January 2018 and December 2021. Their medical history and neonatal hearing risk factors were assessed. Associations between factors were also analyzed. Sixty-six infants were included. A family history of deafness (47%), syndromic deafness (41%), intrauterine growth retardation or prematurity (19.7%), and prolonged NICU admission (18%) were the most observed factors. When analyzing according to these associations, family history of deafness and syndromic cases remained the most prevalent factors (74%), while only five cases (7.8%) presented with other neonatal risk factors only. The majority of congenital hearing loss cases are observed in infants with suspected genetic deafness. Parental counseling, the diagnostic pathway, as well as the healthcare system should be adapted according to these risk factors.

The orange and cherry industries in New South Wales, Australia, are major horticulture industries with a high export value. Climate change has resulted in the carbon footprint of products being used by consumers to guide purchases meaning that products with a relatively high carbon footprint risk losing market access. The carbon footprint of cherry and orange production is unknown and there is no assessment of the success of climate change mitigation strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of their production and move production towards being carbon neutral. This study assesses the climate change mitigation potential of five management changes to on-farm cherry and orange production (revegetation, the use of nitrification inhibitors, renewable energy, green N fertilisers, and pyrolysis of orchard residues) over a 25-year period. for example, orchards in relevant growing regions. The results show that the carbon footprint of production can be reduced by 73 and 83% for cherries and oranges, respectively, when strategies that avoid emissions are included in their production. When strategies that sequester C from the atmosphere are also included, cherry and orange production becomes C negative in the first few years of the scenario. The economics of implementing these strategies are unfavourable, at present; however, our results indicate that the NSW cherry and orange industries can be confident in achieving emissions reductions in on-farm production to assure market access for their products.

By controlling the variance of the radiation pressure exerted on an optically trapped microsphere in real time, we engineer temperature protocols that shortcut thermal relaxation when transferring the microsphere from one thermal equilibrium state to another. We identify the entropic footprint of such accelerated transfers and derive optimal temperature protocols that either minimize the production of entropy for a given transfer duration or accelerate the transfer for a given entropic cost as much as possible. Optimizing the trade-off yields time-entropy bounds that put speed limits on thermalization schemes. We further show how optimization expands the possibilities for accelerating Brownian thermalization down to its fundamental limits. Our approach paves the way for the design of optimized, finite-time thermodynamics for Brownian engines. It also offers a platform for investigating fundamental connections between information geometry and finite-time processes.

Background: While early appropriate antibiotic therapy is a proven means of limiting the progression of infections, especially bacteremia, empirical antibiotic therapy in sepsis is ineffective up to 30%. The aim of this study was to compare early blood culture testing protocols in terms of their ability to shorten the delay between blood sampling and appropriate antibiotic therapy. Methods: In this french observational study, we compared three blood culture testing protocols. Positive blood cultures were tested using either GenMark ePlex panels (multiplex PCR period), a combination of MRSA/SA PCR, ß-Lacta and oxidase tests (multitest period), or conventional identification and susceptibility tests only (reference period). Conventional identification and susceptibility tests were performed in parallel for all samples, as the gold standard. Results: Among the 270 patients with positive blood cultures included, early and conventional results were in good agreement, especially for the multitest period. The delay between a blood culture positivity and initial results was 3.8 (2.9-6.9) h in the multiplex PCR period, 2.6 (1.3-4.5) h in the multitest period and 3.7 (1.8-8.2) h in the reference period (p<0.01). Antibiotic therapy was initiated or adjusted in 68 patients based on early analysis results. The proportion of patients receiving appropriate antibiotic therapy within 48 h of blood sampling was higher in the multiplex PCR and multitest periods, (respectively 90% and 88%) than in the reference period (71%). Conclusion: These results suggest rapid bacterial identification and antibiotic resistance tests are feasible, efficient and can expedite appropriate antibiotic therapy.

The CITIUS detector is a next-generation high-speed X-ray imaging detector. It has integrating-type pixels and is designed to show a consistent linear response at a frame rate of 17.4 kHz, which results in a saturation count rate of over 30 Mcps pixel-1 when operating at an acquisition duty cycle close to 100%, and up to 20 times higher with special extended acquisition modes. Here, its application for Bragg coherent diffraction imaging is demonstrated by taking advantage of the fourth-generation Extremely Brilliant Source of the European Synchrotron (ESRF-EBS, Grenoble, France). The CITIUS detector outperformed a photon-counting detector, similar spatial resolution being achieved (20 ±â€…6 nm versus 22 ±â€…9 nm) with greatly reduced acquisition times (23 s versus 200 s). It is also shown how the CITIUS detector can be expected to perform during dynamic Bragg coherent diffraction imaging measurements. Finally, the current limitations of the CITIUS detector and further optimizations for coherent imaging techniques are discussed.

We stress that the limitations on one of the results of our paper [R. Goerlich et al., Phys. Rev. E 106, 054617 (2022)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.106.054617], which are mentioned in the preceding Comment [A. Bérut, preceding Comment, Phys. Rev. E 107, 056601 (2023)10.1103/PhysRevE.107.056601], were actually already acknowledged and discussed in the original publication. Although the observed relationship between the released heat and the spectral entropy of the correlated noise is not universal (but limited to one-parameter Lorentzian spectra), the existence of such a clear relationship is a solid experimental finding. It not only gives a convincing explanation for the surprising thermodynamics observed in the transitions between nonequilibrium steady states, but also provides new tools for the analysis of nontrivial baths. In addition, by using different measures of the correlated noise information content, it may be possible to generalize these results to non-Lorentzian spectra.

Mammalian sleep has been implicated in maintaining a healthy extracellular environment in the brain. During wakefulness, neuronal activity leads to the accumulation of toxic proteins, which the glymphatic system is thought to clear by flushing cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) through the brain. In mice, this process occurs during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. In humans, ventricular CSF flow has also been shown to increase during NREM sleep, as visualized using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The link between sleep and CSF flow has not been studied in birds before. Using fMRI of naturally sleeping pigeons, we show that REM sleep, a paradoxical state with wake-like brain activity, is accompanied by the activation of brain regions involved in processing visual information, including optic flow during flight. We further demonstrate that ventricular CSF flow increases during NREM sleep, relative to wakefulness, but drops sharply during REM sleep. Consequently, functions linked to brain activation during REM sleep might come at the expense of waste clearance during NREM sleep.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fecal incontinence (FI) improvement following injection of autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells has been previously suggested. This study aimed to test the efficacy and safety of said cells through a multicenter, placebo-controlled study, to determine an appropriate cell dose, and to delineate the target patient population that can most benefit from cell therapy. METHODS: Patients experiencing FI for at least 6 months were randomized to receive a cell-free medium or low or high dose of cells. All patients received pelvic floor electrical stimulation before and after treatment. Incontinence episode frequency (IEF), FI quality of life, FI burden assessed on a visual analog scale, Wexner score, and parameters reflecting anorectal physiological function were all assessed for up to 12 months. RESULTS: Cell therapy improved IEF, FI quality of life, and FI burden, reaching a preset level of statistical significance in IEF change compared with the control treatment. Post hoc exploratory analyses indicated that patients with limited FI duration and high IEF at baseline are most responsive to cells. Effects prevailed or increased in the high cell count group from 6 to 12 months but plateaued or diminished in the low cell count and control groups. Most physiological parameters remained unaltered. No unexpected adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Injection of a high dose of autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells followed by electrical stimulation significantly improved FI, particularly in patients with limited FI duration and high IEF at baseline, and could become a valuable tool for treatment of FI, subject to confirmatory phase 3 trial(s). Light-field cameras allow the acquisition of both the spatial and angular components of the light-field. The conventional way to perform such acquisitions leads to a strong spatio-angular resolution limitation but correlation-enabled plenoptic cameras have been introduced recently that relax this constraint. Here we use a computational version of this concept to acquire realistic light-fields images using a commercial DSLR Camera lens as an imaging system. By placing the image sensor in the focal plane of a lens, within the camera we ensure the acquisition of pure angular components together with the spatial information. We perform an acquisition presenting a high spatio-angular rays resolution obtained through a trade off of the temporal resolution. The acquisition reported is photo-realistic and the acquisition of diffraction limited features is observed with the setup. Finally, we demonstrate the refocusing abilities of the camera.

We propose to use a correlated noise bath to drive an optically trapped Brownian particle that mimics active biological matter. Due to the flexibility and precision of our setup, we are able to control the different parameters that drive the stochastic motion of the particle with unprecedented accuracy, thus reaching strongly correlated regimes that are not easily accessible with real active matter. In particular, by using the correlation time (i.e., the "color") of the noise as a control parameter, we can trigger transitions between two nonequilibrium steady states with no expended work, but only a calorific cost. Remarkably, the measured heat production is directly proportional to the spectral entropy of the correlated noise, in a fashion that is reminiscent of Landauer's principle. Our procedure can be viewed as a method for harvesting information from the active fluctuations.

The new generation of synchrotron light sources are pushing X-ray detectors to their limits. Very demanding conditions with unprecedented flux and higher operating energies now require high-performance X-ray detectors combining sensitivity, efficiency and scalability. Over the years, hybrid pixel detectors have supplemented indirect detectors based on scintillation, with undeniable advantages. Such detectors based on silicon are, however, rather expensive to produce and are no more satisfying in terms of X-ray stopping power when targeting energies above 20 keV. An indirect detector with single X-ray photon sensitivity therefore offers promising opportunities for applications operating over a wide range of energies and fluxes. In this work, the performances of such an approach are investigated with state-of-the-art elements: a commercial sCMOS camera with fiber-optics plate coupling and a Gd2O2S:Tb powder-based scintillator. A simple method is presented for evaluation of the single X-ray photon detection limit and single X-ray sensitivity is demonstrated with the studied detector above 20 keV. Geant4 simulations also provide insight to better define the limiting factors. Finally, guidelines are provided for future R&D in the design and assembly of an innovative detector combining advantages of direct and indirect detection schemes.

We investigate the fragmentation dynamics of adamantane dications produced after core-ionization at the carbon edge followed by Auger decay. The combination of high-resolution electron spectroscopy, energy-resolved electron-ion multi-coincidence spectroscopy and different theoretical models allows us to give a complete characterization of the processes involved after ionization. We show that energy- and site-sensitivity is observed even for a highly-symmetric molecule that lacks any unique atomic site.

Small specimens of spruce wood with different degrees of delignification were studied using in-situ tensile tests and simultaneous synchrotron X-ray diffraction to reveal the effect of delignification and densification on their tensile properties at relative humidities of 70-80 %. In addition to mechanical properties, these analyses yield the ratio of strains in the cellulose crystals and in the bulk, which reflects the stress-transfer to crystalline cellulose. While the specific modulus of elasticity slightly increases from native wood by partial or complete delignification, the lattice strain ratio does not show a significant change. This could indicate a compensatory effect from the decomposition of the amorphous matrix by delignification and from a tighter packing of cellulose crystals that would increase the stress transfer. The reduced strain to failure and maximum lattice strain of delignified specimens suggests that the removal of lignin affects the stress-strain behavior with fracture at lower strain levels.

A large and increasing number of scientific domains pushes for high neutron imaging resolution achieved in reasonable times. Here we present the principle, design and performance of a detector based on infinity corrected optics combined with a crystalline Gd3Ga5O12 : Eu scintillator, which provides an isotropic sub-4 µm true resolution. The exposure times are only of a few minutes per image. This is made possible also by the uniquely intense cold neutron flux available at the imaging beamline NeXT-Grenoble. These comparatively rapid acquisitions are compatible with multiple high quality tomographic acquisitions, opening new venues for in-operando testing, as briefly exemplified here.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of sacral nerve modulation (SNM) in a large cohort of patients implanted for at least 10 years, quantify adverse event rates, and identify predictive factors of long-term success. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Few studies have evaluated the long-term success of SNM. METHODS: Data collected prospectively from patients implanted for fecal incontinence (FI) in 7 French centers between January 1998 and December 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. Patient FI severity scores were assessed before and 10 years after implantation. The main evaluation criterion was the success of SNM defined by the continuation of the treatment without additional therapies. The secondary evaluation criteria were the rate of device revisions and explantations. Preoperative predictors of success at 10 years were sought. RESULTS: Of the 360 patients (27 males, mean age: 59 ± 12 years) implanted for FI, 162 (45%) had a favorable outcome 10 years post-implantation, 115 (31.9%) failed, and 83 (23.1%) were lost to follow-up. The favorable outcome derived from the time-to-event Kaplan-Meier curve at 10 years was 0.64 (95% CI 0.58-0.69). FI severity scores were significantly better 10 years post-implantation compared to preimplantation (7.4 ± 4.3 vs 14.0 ± 3.2; P < 0.0001). During the 10-year follow-up, 233 patients (64.7%) had a surgical revision and 94 (26.1%) were explanted. A history of surgery for FI and sex (male) were associated with an increased risk of an unfavorable outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term efficacy was maintained in approximately half of the FI patients treated by SNM at least 10 years post-implantation.

In this paper, we understand the emergence of life as a pure individuation process. Individuation already occurs in open thermodynamics systems near equilibrium. We understand such open systems, as already recursively characterized (R1) by the relation between their internal properties, and their boundary conditions. Second, global properties emerge in such physical systems. We interpret this change as the fact that their structure is the recursive result of their operations (R2). We propose a simulation of the emergence of life in Earth by a mapping (R) through which (R1R2) operators are applied to themselves, so that RN = (R1R2)N. We suggest that under specific thermodynamic (open systems out of equilibrium) and chemical conditions (autocatalysis, kinetic dynamic stability), this mapping can go up to a limit characterized by a fixed-point equation: [Formula: see text]. In this equation, ([Formula: see text]) symbolizes a regime of permanent resonance characterizing the biosphere, as open from inside, by the recursive differential relation between the biosphere and all its holobionts. As such the biosphere is closed on itself as a pure differential entity. ([Formula: see text]) symbolizes the regime of permanent change characterizing the emergence of evolution in the biosphere. As such the biosphere is closed on itself, by the principle of descent with modifications, and by the fact that every holobiont evolves in a niche, while evolving with it.

Mammalian pupils respond to light1,2 and dilate with arousal, attention, cognitive workload, and emotions,3 thus reflecting the state of the brain. Pupil size also varies during sleep, constricting during deep non-REM sleep4-7 and dilating slightly during REM sleep.4-6 Anecdotal reports suggest that, unlike mammals, birds constrict their pupils during aroused states, such as courtship and aggression,8-10 raising the possibility that pupillary behavior also differs between mammals and birds during sleep. Here, we measured pupil size in awake pigeons and used their translucent eyelid to investigate sleep-state-dependent changes in pupil size. Male pigeons constricted their pupils during courtship and other male-female interactions but not while engaging in other waking behaviors. Unlike mouse pupils, the pigeons' pupils were dilated during non-REM sleep, while over 1,000 bursts of constriction and relaxation, which we call rapid iris movements (RIMs), occurred primarily during REM sleep. Consistent with the avian iris being composed largely of striated muscles,11-15 rather than smooth muscles, as in mammals, pharmacological experiments revealed that RIMs are mediated by nicotinic cholinergic receptors in the iris muscles. Despite receiving input from a parasympathetic nucleus, but consistent with its striated nature, the avian iris sphincter muscle behaves like skeletal muscles controlled by the somatic nervous system, constricting during courtship displays, relaxing during non-REM sleep, and twitching during REM sleep. We speculate that during wakefulness, pupillary constrictions are involved in social communication, whereas RIMs occurring during REM sleep might maintain the efficacy of this motor system and/or reflect the processing of associated memories.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Determine whether in the hippocampus and the supramammillary nucleus (SuM) the same neurons are reactivated when mice are exposed 1 week apart to two periods of wakefulness (W-W), paradoxical sleep rebound (PSR-PSR) or a period of W followed by a period of PSR (W-PSR). METHODS: We combined the innovative TRAP2 mice method in which neurons expressing cFos permanently express tdTomato after tamoxifen injection with cFos immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: We found out that a large number of tdTomato+ and cFos+ cells are localized in the dentate gyrus (DG) after PSR and W while CA1 and CA3 contained both types of neurons only after W. The number of cFos+ cells in the infrapyramidal but not the suprapyramidal blade of the DG was positively correlated with the amount of PS. In addition, we did not find double-labeled cells in the DG whatever the group of mice. In contrast, a high percentage of CA1 neurons were double-labeled in W-W mice. Finally, in the supramammillary nucleus, a large number of cells were double-labeled in W-W, PSR-PSR but not in W-PSR mice. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, our results are the first to show that different neurons are activated during W and PS in the supramammillary nucleus and the hippocampus. Further, we showed for the first time that granule cells of the infrapyramidal blade of the DG are activated during PS but not during W. Further experiments are now needed to determine whether these granule cells belong to memory engrams inducing memory reactivation during PS.
