RESUMO

The diversity of plant-pollinator interactions is grounded in floral resources, with nectar considered one of the main floral rewards plants produce for pollinators. However, a global evaluation of the number of animal-pollinated nectar-producing angiosperms and their distribution world-wide remains elusive. We compiled a thorough database encompassing 7621 plant species from 322 families to estimate the number and proportion of nectar-producing angiosperms reliant on animal pollination. Through extensive sampling of plant communities, we also explored the interplay between nectar production, floral resource diversity, latitudinal and elevational gradients, contemporary climate, and environmental characteristics. Roughly 223 308 animal-pollinated angiosperms are nectar-producing, accounting for 74.4% of biotic-pollinated species. Global distribution patterns of nectar-producing plants reveal a distinct trend along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, with increased proportions of plants producing nectar in high latitudes and altitudes. Conversely, tropical communities in warm and moist climates exhibit greater floral resource diversity and a lower proportion of nectar-producing plants. These findings suggest that ecological trends driven by climate have fostered the diversification of floral resources in warmer and less seasonal climates, reducing the proportion of solely nectar-producing plants. Our study provides a baseline for understanding plant-pollinator relationships, plant diversification, and the distribution of plant traits.

In this study, we evaluated the fungal diversity present associated with cores of Oligocene rocks using a DNA metabarcoding approach. We detected 940,969 DNA reads grouped into 198 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) representing the phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Rozellomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Zoopagomycota, Aphelidiomycota (Fungi) and the fungal-like Oomycota (Stramenopila), in rank abundance order. Pseudogymnoascus pannorum, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., Cladosporium sp., Aspergillaceae sp. and Diaporthaceae sp. were assessed to be dominant taxa, with 22 fungal ASVs displaying intermediate abundance and 170 being minor components of the assigned fungal diversity. The data obtained displayed high diversity indices, while rarefaction indicated that the majority of the diversity was detected. However, the diversity indices varied between the cores analysed. The endolithic fungal community detected using a metabarcoding approach in the Oligocene rock samples examined contains a rich and complex mycobiome comprising taxa with different lifestyles, comparable with the diversity reported in recent studies of a range of Antarctic habitats. Due to the high fungal diversity detected, our results suggest the necessity of further research to develop strategies to isolate these fungi in culture for evolutionary, physiological, and biogeochemical studies, and to assess their potential role in biotechnological applications.

We assessed the fungal diversity present in snow sampled during summer in the north-west Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctica using a metabarcoding approach. A total of 586,693 fungal DNA reads were obtained and assigned to 203 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). The dominant phylum was Ascomycota, followed by Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, Chytridiomycota and Mucoromycota. Penicillium sp., Pseudogymnoascus pannorum, Coniochaeta sp., Aspergillus sp., Antarctomyces sp., Phenoliferia sp., Cryolevonia sp., Camptobasidiaceae sp., Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Bannozyma yamatoana were assessed as abundant taxa. The snow fungal diversity indices were high but varied across the different locations sampled. Of the fungal ASVs detected, only 28 were present all sampling locations. The 116 fungal genera detected in the snow were dominated by saprotrophic taxa, followed by symbiotrophic and pathotrophic. Our data indicate that, despite the low temperature and oligotrophic conditions, snow can host a richer mycobiome than previously reported through traditional culturing studies. The snow mycobiome includes a complex diversity dominated by cosmopolitan, cold-adapted, psychrophilic and endemic taxa. While saprophytes dominate this community, a range of other functional groups are present.

We assessed soil fungal and fungal-like diversity using metabarcoding in ornithogenically influenced soils around nests of the bird species Phalacrocorax atriceps, Macronectes giganteus, Pygoscelis antarcticus, and Pygoscelis adelie on the South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctic. A total of 1,392,784 fungal DNA reads was obtained and assigned to 186 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). The dominant fungal phylum was Ascomycota, followed by Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Rozellomycota, Mortierellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Aphelidiomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Mucoromycota, and the fungal-like Oomycota (Stramenopila), in rank order. Antarctomyces sp., Blastocladiomycota sp., Pseudogymnoascus pannorum, Microascaceae sp., Mortierella sp., Lobulomycetales sp., Sordariomycetes sp., Fungal sp., Rhizophydiales sp., Pseudeurotiaceae sp., Chytridiomycota sp. 1, Filobasidiella sp., Tausonia pullulans, Betamyces sp., and Leucosporidium sp. were the most abundant assigned taxa. The fungal assemblages present in the different ornithogenically influenced soils displayed different diversity indices. However, in general, we detected high fungal diversity and few taxa shared between the samples. Despite the polyextreme environmental conditions experienced in these Antarctic soils, the metabarcoding approach detected a rich and complex fungal community dominated by saprophytes, but with some pathogenic taxa also present. The community was dominated by psychrophilic and psychrotolerant taxa, some apparently endemic to Antarctica, and those identified only at higher taxonomic levels, which may represent currently undescribed fungi. The mycobiome detected included taxa characterized by different ecological roles, including saprotrophic, human- and animal-associated, phytopathogenic, mutualistic, and cosmopolitan. These fungi may potentially be dispersed by birds or in the air column over great distances, including between different regions within Antarctica and from South America, Africa, and Oceania.

Climate change has led to an alarming increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires worldwide. While it is known that amphibians have physiological characteristics that make them highly susceptible to fire, the specific impacts of wildfires on their symbiotic skin bacterial communities (i.e., bacteriomes) and infection by the deadly chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, remain poorly understood. Here, we address this research gap by evaluating the effects of fire on the amphibian skin bacteriome and the subsequent risk of chytridiomycosis. We sampled the skin bacteriome of the Neotropical species Scinax squalirostris and Boana leptolineata in fire and control plots before and after experimental burnings. Fire was linked with a marked increase in bacteriome beta dispersion, a proxy for skin microbial dysbiosis, alongside a trend of increased pathogen loads. By shedding light on the effects of fire on amphibian skin bacteriomes, this study contributes to our broader understanding of the impacts of wildfires on vulnerable vertebrate species.

Although random meiosis should prevent the facultative adjustment of offspring sex ratio, theory predicts that females should produce more of the sex with the higher reproductive value. We reported a case of offspring sex ratio manipulation in grass wrens Cistothorus platensis. Males in better body condition would have higher reproductive value than females due to the potential for social polygyny and extra-pair fertilizations. On the other hand, local demography influences reproductive strategies in grass wrens as male abundance affects both social polygyny and extra-pair paternity frequencies. We evaluated whether females bias their brood sex ratio in response to adult sex ratio and nestling body condition (a proxy for female's prospects of producing high-quality males). Females raised more male offspring when males were less abundant in the population (female-biased adult sex ratio). However, we found no relationship between nestling body condition and brood sex ratio, suggesting that females did not bias the brood sex ratio towards males when able to raise nestlings in better body condition. Taken together, our results provide the first suggestive evidence that female birds can manipulate their offspring sex ratio in response to the adult sex ratio.

This prospective exploratory study conducted from January 2023 through May 2023 evaluated the ability of ChatGPT to answer questions from Brazilian radiology board examinations, exploring how different prompt strategies can influence performance using GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Three multiple-choice board examinations that did not include image-based questions were evaluated: (a) radiology and diagnostic imaging, (b) mammography, and (c) neuroradiology. Five different styles of zero-shot prompting were tested: (a) raw question, (b) brief instruction, (c) long instruction, (d) chain-of-thought, and (e) question-specific automatic prompt generation (QAPG). The QAPG and brief instruction prompt strategies performed best for all examinations (P < .05), obtaining passing scores (≥60%) on the radiology and diagnostic imaging examination when testing both versions of ChatGPT. The QAPG style achieved a score of 60% for the mammography examination using GPT-3.5 and 76% using GPT-4. GPT-4 achieved a score up to 65% in the neuroradiology examination. The long instruction style consistently underperformed, implying that excessive detail might harm performance. GPT-4's scores were less sensitive to prompt style changes. The QAPG prompt style showed a high volume of the "A" option but no statistical difference, suggesting bias was found. GPT-4 passed all three radiology board examinations, and GPT-3.5 passed two of three examinations when using an optimal prompt style. BACKGROUND: Overcoming the impact of sodium reduction in the properties of emulsified sausages is a current challenge in the production of healthier meat products. Because the emulsifying process play a key role in the stability of sausages, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of two mechanical emulsifying systems (cutter versus continuous emulsifier) and two levels of sodium chloride (2.50 and 1.25%) on the physicochemical characteristics of bologna sausages. RESULTS: A reduction of sodium increased the L* value and reduced the a* value, and also decreased the protein extraction yield in sausages produced in the cutter system. Moreover, the emulsion stability of reduced sodium batter was increased by cutter emulsification (F50C). On the other hand, the continuous emulsifier process did not decrease the extraction of myofibrillar proteins in F50E (sodium reduced treatment), resulting in minimal impact on emulsion stability and an increase in hardness in reduced-sodium sausages. CONCLUSION: Therefore, to produce low-sodium sausages, the continuous emulsifier was more effective producing batters with increased extracted myofibrillar proteins, improving the structure and functionality of myofibrillar proteins compared to the cutter process. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Snow is a unique microhabitat, despite being a harsh environment, multiple life forms have adapted to survive in it. While algae, bacteria and fungi are dominant microorganisms in Antarctic snow, little is known about other organisms that may be present in this habitat. We used metabarcoding to investigate DNA sequence diversity of non-fungal eukaryotes present in snow obtained from six different sites across the Maritime Antarctica. A total of 20 taxa were assigned to obtained sequences, representing five Kingdoms (Chromista, Protozoa, Viridiplantae and Metazoa) and four phyla (Ciliophora, Cercozoa, Chlorophyta and Cnidaria). The highest diversity indices were detected in Trinity Peninsula followed by Robert Island, Arctowski Peninsula, Deception Island, King George Island and Snow Island. The most abundant assignments were to Trebouxiophyceae, followed by Chlamydomonas nivalis and Chlamidomonadales. No taxa were detected at all sites. Three potentially new records for Antarctica were detected: two Ciliophora (Aspidisca magna and Stokesia sp.) and the green algae Trebouxia potteri. Our data suggested that similarities found between the sites may be more related with snow physicochemical properties rather than geographic proximity or latitude. This study provides new insights into the diversity and distribution of eukaryotic organisms in Antarctic snow.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic affected medical practice worldwide due to interventions to prevent spreading. Its effect on ophthalmology practices in Latin America has not yet been explored. We aimed to assess the perceptions about the pandemic from countries' ophthalmological national and subspecialty retina societies affiliated to the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO). Patients and Methods: A survey-based study of leaders of national ophthalmological and retinal societies was conducted. The survey was sent by email to 30 societies, from which 20 responded (12 countries, 66.6% response rate). It included closed- and open-ended questions about (1) operational capacity and precautions, (2) telemedicine and virtual care, (3) procedures, and (4) post-pandemic considerations. Results: There was a marked decline in ophthalmology patient visits (80-95%) and elective surgeries (90%) during 2020 compared to before the pandemic. Precautions like temperature checks, mask usage, and social distancing were widely implemented while personal protective equipment (PPE) availability varied. Telemedicine use was limited due to lack of experience with it. Reopening plans focused on maintaining precautions and gradually resuming activities. Economic and security concerns were raised, and adherence to guidelines was emphasized. Respondents acknowledged the need to adapt to a "new normal". Long duration drugs, fewer imaging studies, and shorter wait times were preferred; however, availability of long duration drugs was limited. Conclusion: The pandemic impacted ophthalmology in Latin America, with reduced patient visits, procedures, and surgeries. Delayed treatment and complications were likely the result of the pandemic.

Soybean varieties with indeterminate growth habit are widely used in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and are characterized by not having well-defined phenological stages. Due to the importance of bee conservation, studies on the frequency and time of visitation in indeterminate soybean are needed. Samples were collected in a 4-ha plot of soybeans not treated with insecticides. Sampling was carried out at random spots, throughout the flowering period, starting at 08h:00min, during 15 min/hour, successively until 16h:00min. Generalized Linear Models were generated and the Poisson regression model provided the best fit, reflecting the significant differences revealed by the deviance analysis. The association between bees and climatic variables was tested with the Spearman's correlation. The temporal pattern of bee visitation was independently influenced by flowering period and time of day. However climatic variables did not influence significantly bee visitation rate. In the first days of flowering, bees were more abundant, especially between 10h and 15h. These results have practical implications in the maintenance of this species during soybean management practices, contributing to a balanced coexistence between beekeepers and soybean growers, by avoiding applications of phytosanitary products during the periods of high bee visitation.

van der Waals heterostructures composed of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides and vdW magnetic materials offer an intriguing platform to functionalize valley and excitonic properties in nonmagnetic TMDs. Here, we report magneto photoluminescence (PL) investigations of monolayer (ML) MoSe2 on the layered A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor CrSBr under different magnetic field orientations. Our results reveal a clear influence of the CrSBr magnetic order on the optical properties of MoSe2, such as an anomalous linear-polarization dependence, changes of the exciton/trion energies, a magnetic-field dependence of the PL intensities, and a valley g-factor with signatures of an asymmetric magnetic proximity interaction. Furthermore, first-principles calculations suggest that MoSe2/CrSBr forms a broken-gap (type-III) band alignment, facilitating charge transfer processes. The work establishes that antiferromagnetic-nonmagnetic interfaces can be used to control the valley and excitonic properties of TMDs, relevant for the development of opto-spintronics devices.

Long-term-ecological-research (LTER) faces many challenges, including the difficulty of obtaining long-term funding, changes in research questions and sampling designs, keeping researchers collecting standardized data for many years, impediments to interactions with local people, and the difficulty of integrating the needs of local decision makers with "big science". These issues result in a lack of universally accepted guidelines as to how research should be done and integrated among LTER sites. Here we discuss how the RAPELD (standardized field infrastructure system), can help deal with these issues as a complementary technique in LTER studies, allowing comparisons across landscapes and ecosystems and reducing sampling costs. RAPELD uses local surveys to understand broad spatial and temporal patterns while enhancing decision-making and training of researchers, local indigenous groups and traditional communities. Sampling of ecological data can be carried out by different researchers through standardized protocols, resulting in spatial data that can be used to answer temporal questions, and allow new questions to be investigated. Results can also be integrated into existing biodiversity networks. Integrated systems are the most efficient way to save resources, maximize results, and accumulate information that can be used in the face of the unknown unknowns upon which our future depends.

The differential energy metabolism of cancer cells has stimulated the development of tools that can be applied to better understand the complex biological interaction involved in the uptake of glucose analogs at the cellular level in this disease. Herein, we explored the outstanding optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) to develop a new fluorescent glyconanoprobe using the 1-thio-ß-d-glucose (Glc). Then, monolayers and spheroids of HeLa cells were applied to probe the biological interaction with the conjugate through fluorescence techniques. Spheroids have been gaining prominence for better mimicking the tumor microenvironment. The Glc-QDs conjugate was prepared by a facile and direct procedure based on the affinity of the Glc thiol group by the QD semiconductor surface. The conjugation was evaluated and confirmed by Zeta potential (ζ) measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Moreover, a biological assay using Candida albicans yeasts coated with concanavalin A, by exploring the lectin-carbohydrate affinity, was also developed to further confirm the conjugation, which corroborated the previous analyses. The hanging drop method was used to prepare the spheroids. The fluorescence microscopy analyses indicated an intracellular labeling by the glyconanoprobe, in both cell culture models. Flow cytometry assays revealed effective uptake of the conjugate (above ca. 76%), even by cells cultivated as spheroids, applying short incubation time. Therefore, a new fluorescent glyconanoprobe was developed, which showed potential to be applied for investigating mechanisms involved in the uptake of glucose analogs, both by simpler and complex cancer biological models, as monolayers and spheroids.

Introducción: el músculo pronador cuadrado funciona como un estabilizador dinámico de la articulación radiocubital distal. Su reparación posterior a la fijación interna con placa de bloqueo volar en fracturas distales del radio es controvertida. Objetivo: determinar si la reparación del músculo pronador cuadrado influye en los resultados clínicos y funcionales de pacientes con fractura de radio distal que se sometieron a reducción abierta y fijación interna con placa de bloqueo volar. Materiales y métodos: se realizó una revisión sistemática y metanálisis. Las bases de datos analizadas fueron PubMed/Medline, Embase y Bireme/Lilacs (búsqueda realizada hasta el 20 de febrero del año 2023). Los términos de búsqueda fueron: distal radius fracture AND volar plate AND pronator quadratus. Se determinó la calidad metodológica según el manual de revisiones Cochrane. Resultados: en total se incluyeron 4 ensayos clínicos aleatorizados de adecuada calidad metodológica, lo cual corresponde al análisis de 213 participantes. Existen mejores resultados en la puntuación DASH a los 12 meses de seguimiento en el grupo de no reparación del músculo pronador cuadrado DM 2,8 [IC 95%: 0,51;5,10]. No hubo diferencias significativas al año de seguimiento en las puntuaciones de dolor, rangos de movilidad de la muñeca, fuerza de agarre e incidencia de complicaciones. Conclusión: no existe evidencia que sustente la reparación rutinaria del músculo pronador cuadrado posterior a la fijación interna con placa de bloqueo volar en las fracturas de radio distal. (AU)


Introduction: the pronator quadratus muscle functions as a dynamic stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint, and its repair after internal fixation with volar locking plate in distal radius fractures is controversial. Objective: to determine whether the repair of the pronator quadratus muscle influences the clinical and functional outcomes of patients with distal radius fracture who underwent open reduction and internal fixation with volar locking plate. Materials and methods: a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The analyzed databases were Pubmed/Medline, Embase, and Bireme/Lilacs (search performed until February 20th, 2023). The search terms were distal radius fracture AND volar plate AND pronator quadratus. Methodological quality was determined according to the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook. Results: a total of 4 randomized clinical trials of adequate methodological quality, corresponding to the analysis of 213 participants, were included. Better DASH scores were observed at 12 months of follow-up in the non-repair group of the pronator quadratus muscle, with a mean difference of 2.8 [95% CI 0.51; 5.10]. There were no significant differences at one-year follow-up in pain scores, wrist mobility ranges, grip strength, and incidence of complications. Conclusion: there is no evidence to support routine repair of the pronator quadratus muscle after internal fixation with volar locking plate in distal radius fractures. (AU)

Serine proteases play crucial biological roles and have their activity controlled by inhibitors, such as the EcTI, a serine protease inhibitor purified from Enterolobium contortisiliquum seeds, which has anticancer activity. This study aimed to conjugate EcTI with quantum dots (QDs), fluorophores with outstanding optical properties, and investigate the interaction of QDs-EcTI nanoprobe with cancer cells. The conjugation was evaluated by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and fluorescence microplate assay (FMA). EcTI inhibitory activity after interaction with QDs was also analyzed. From FCS, the conjugate presented a hydrodynamic diameter about 4× greater than bare QDs, suggesting a successful conjugation. This was supported by FMA, which showed a relative fluorescence intensity of ca. 3815% for the nanosystem, concerning bare QDs or EcTI alone. The EcTI inhibitory activity remained intact after its interaction with QDs. From flow cytometry analyses, approximately 62% of MDA-MB-231 and 90% of HeLa cells were labeled with the QD-EcTI conjugate, suggesting that their membranes have different protease levels to which EcTI exhibits an affinity. Concluding, the QD-EcTI represents a valuable nanotool to study the interaction of this inhibitor with cancer cells using fluorescence-based techniques with the potential to unravel the intricate dynamics of interplays between proteases and inhibitors in cancer biology.

RESUMO

Globally, human activities impose threats to nature and the provision of ecosystem services, such as pollination. In this context, ecological restoration provides opportunities to create managed landscapes that maximize biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture, e.g., via provision of pollination services. Managing pollination services and restoration opportunities requires the engagement of distinct stakeholders embedded in diverse social institutions. Nevertheless, frameworks toward sustainable agriculture often overlook how stakeholders interact and access power in social arenas. We present a perspective integrating pollination services, ecological restoration, and public engagement for biodiversity conservation and agricultural production. We highlight the importance of a comprehensive assessment of pollination services, restoration opportunities identification, and a public engagement strategy anchored in institutional analysis of the social arenas involved in restoration efforts. Our perspective can therefore guide the implementation of practices from local to country scales to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease that strikes many people from tropical and subtropical countries where there are not satisfactory sanitation and wide access to clean water. Schistosoma spp., the causative agents of schistosomiasis, exhibit a quite complex life cycle that involves two hosts (humans and snails, respectively, the definitive and the intermediate), and five evolutive forms: cercariae (human infective form), schistosomula, adult worms, eggs, and miracidia. The techniques to diagnose schistosomiasis still have various limitations, mainly regarding low-intensity infections. Although various mechanisms associated with schistosomiasis have already been evidenced, there is still a need to fulfill the comprehension of this disease, especially to prospect for novel biomarkers to improve its diagnosis. Developing methods with more sensitivity and portability to detect the infection is valuable to reach schistosomiasis control. In this context, this review has gathered information not only on schistosomiasis biomarkers but also on emerging optical and electrochemical tools proposed in selected studies from about the last ten years. Aspects of the assays regarding the sensibility, specificity, and time needed for detecting diverse biomarkers are described. We hope this review can guide future developments in the field of schistosomiasis, contributing to improving its diagnosis and eradication.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is the most efficient treatment for obesity. However, in some cases, weight regain can occur. Currently, it is unknown the best antiobesity medication (AOM) for such clinical situation. This study aims to evaluate the effect of AOM in patients with weight regain after bariatric surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study from December 2010 to July 2019 with patients submitted to bariatric surgery that had weight regain and received AOM for at least 2 years. RESULTS: Of 96 patients that had weight regain in the analyzed period and received AOM, 16 were excluded from the analysis due to non-compliance (n = 7), treatment failure (n = 5), intolerable side effects with all available AOM (n = 2), or interaction with other medications (n = 2). Eighty patients were included in the analysis. The mean age was 59.0 ± 10.1 years, 88.8% were female, 91.2% white, and most of them were submitted to gastric bypass (87.6%). The mean preoperative and nadir weight after surgery were 127.9 ± 25.5 kg and 84.7 ± 22.8 kg, respectively. At the initiation of AOM, the mean baseline weight was 99.4 ± 23.1 kg. After 2 years of follow-up, there was significant weight loss in the groups treated with topiramate-alone (- 3.2 kg), topiramate plus sibutramine (- 6.1kg), and orlistat-alone or in combination (- 3.9kg). No statistical difference was observed in the sibutramine-alone group. CONCLUSION: Topiramate (alone or associated with sibutramine) and orlistat (alone or in combination) promoted significant weight loss after 2 years of use in patients submitted to bariatric surgery with weight regain.
