RESUMO

The aim of this work is to define harmonized reference conditions and assessment thresholds for selected criteria elements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Descriptor 5 (Eutrophication) in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and to test if a tool for integrated assessment of the status of marine systems can be used as a common methodological approach. In this frame, we tested two statistical approaches in order to set threshold values for four criteria of Descriptor 5: nutrients, chlorophyll a, transparency and dissolved oxygen in the bottom waters. It is noteworthy that this work revealed the need to apply common procedures in data treatment and assessment evaluation. This is the first attempt to set common methods for the assessment of eutrophication in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is essential in marine environments, especially those shared by several countries. To this end, we have applied common criteria and metrics and established thresholds "Good" and "Moderate" for nutrients, chlorophyll a, transparency and dissolved oxygen in the bottom waters for the different Water Types of the Adriatic and Aegean Seas (I, II, IIIW, IIIE), based on datasets provided by Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece. The selected criteria elements were common for all countries, providing a unified approach to GES assessment of two case study areas: the Adriatic Sea and the Saronikos Gulf. Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) threshold values of 15.6, 6.85, 1.61 and 2.11 µmol L-1 were set for the Water Types I, II, IIIW and IIIE, respectively. We also tested if an aggregation tool for GES assessment, such as Nested Environmental status Assessment Tool (NEAT), could be used as a common methodological approach. The comparison of NEAT with TRIX showed good comparability. In this end, NEAT can be used as a useful and much needed assessment tool for assessing eutrophication status of the marine.

Anthropogenic pressures considerably affect coastal areas, increasing nitrogen and phosphorous loads that lead to eutrophication. Eutrophication sometimes results in hypoxic and/or anoxic conditions near the bottom water. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations influence redox-sensitive nutrients, which can alter the benthic flux of nutrients. We retrieved sediment cores from two sites in the eastern and western parts of Elefsis Bay, a semi-enclosed area of the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece, during winter and summer. In the western part, seasonally hypoxic or anoxic conditions occurred. We analysed pore-water samples under normoxic, hypoxic and anoxic bottom water conditions to study the pore-water nutrient concentrations variability under different oxygen regimes. Ex situ incubation experiments were conducted at the site experiencing oxygen deficiency by manipulating the DO concentrations. The pore-water nutrient concentrations showed higher variability at the site experiencing oxygen deficiency. Notably, elevated ammonium concentrations were observed in the pore water during anoxic conditions, in the 2-20-cm sediment layer. However, the benthic fluxes of ammonium and phosphate at the 0-2-cm sediment layer were comparable under hypoxic and anoxic conditions. The results of the incubation experiments demonstrate a direct decrease in nitrate concentrations as the DO concentrations diminished in the overlying water. The incubations after re-oxygenating the overlying water show that phosphate was more efficiently scavenged when anoxic conditions prevailed in the bottom water. The incubation experiments indicate the rapid response of the seafloor to oxygen availability, particularly concerning processes that influence nitrate and phosphate concentrations. These observations highlight the dynamic nature of nutrient cycling in shallow, seasonally anoxic environments, such as Elefsis Bay, and emphasise the sensitivity of the seafloor ecosystem to changes in bottom water oxygen availability.

The Mediterranean Sea has been sampled irregularly by research vessels in the past, mostly by national expeditions in regional waters. To monitor the hydrographic, biogeochemical and circulation changes in the Mediterranean Sea, a systematic repeat oceanographic survey programme called Med-SHIP was recommended by the Mediterranean Science Commission (CIESM) in 2011, as part of the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP). Med-SHIP consists of zonal and meridional surveys with different frequencies, where comprehensive physical and biogeochemical properties are measured with the highest international standards. The first zonal survey was done in 2011 and repeated in 2018. In addition, a network of meridional (and other key) hydrographic sections were designed: the first cycle of these sections was completed in 2016, with three cruises funded by the EU project EUROFLEETS2. This paper presents the physical and chemical data of the meridional and key transects in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean Sea collected during those cruises.

Introduction: Marine viruses regulate microbial population dynamics and biogeochemical cycling in the oceans. The ability of viruses to manipulate hosts' metabolism through the expression of viral auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) was recently highlighted, having important implications in energy production and flow in various aquatic environments. Up to now, the presence and diversity of viral AMGs is studied using -omics data, and rarely using quantitative measures of viral activity alongside. Methods: In the present study, four depth layers (5, 50, 75, and 1,000 m) with discrete hydrographic features were sampled in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea; we studied lytic viral community composition and AMG content through metagenomics, and lytic production rates through the viral reduction approach in the ultra-oligotrophic Levantine basin where knowledge regarding viral actions is rather limited. Results and Discussion: Our results demonstrate depth-dependent patterns in viral diversity and AMG content, related to differences in temperature, nutrients availability, and host bacterial productivity and abundance. Although lytic viral production rates were similar along the water column, the virus-to-bacteria ratio was higher and the particular set of AMGs was more diverse in the bathypelagic (1,000 m) than the shallow epipelagic (5, 50, and 75 m) layers, revealing that the quantitative effect of viruses on their hosts may be the same along the water column through the intervention of different AMGs. In the resource- and energy-limited bathypelagic waters of the Eastern Mediterranean, the detected AMGs could divert hosts' metabolism toward energy production, through a boost in gluconeogenesis, fatty-acid and glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, and sulfur relay. Near the deep-chlorophyll maximum depth, an exceptionally high percentage of AMGs related to photosynthesis was noticed. Taken together our findings suggest that the roles of viruses in the deep sea might be even more important than previously thought as they seem to orchestrate energy acquisition and microbial community dynamics, and thus, biogeochemical turnover in the oceans.

In the period 1987-2017, a series of physical and chemical measurements related to oxygen variability at a trough area with a maximum depth of ~420 m in the West Saronikos Gulf, reveal the following: In the early 90s, deep winter mixing occurred resulting in an oxygenation down to ~420 m followed by an oxygen decline. This decline reached near-bottom hypoxic conditions (O2 < ~62 µM (µmol/L)) after 1998, while a denitrification phase occurred after 2000 and a complete bottom anoxia in 2005. In June 2012, an oxygenation down to ~350 m was detected that most likely occurred in winter 2012. The 2012 oxygenation raised the until-then anoxic bottom concentrations to hypoxic ones in the years towards 2017 via vertical diffusive oxygen transfer. Observations of the benthic communities during the hypoxia, severe hypoxia (O2 < ~15 µM) and oxygen recovery phases showed a peak of opportunists in the hypoxia and a long faunal depletion in the severe hypoxia phases. A reversal in the benthic community structure appeared after the oxygenation of 2012 with the (re)appearance of opportunists while, in 2017, the community showed signs of retreat to earlier stages. The main anthropogenic pressure that could tentatively affect the oxygen concentration in the study area is posed by the Athens treated-sewage outfall at ~40 km away from the trough, which inputs organic matter into the Saronikos Gulf through effluent water of reduced salinity that, in addition, may alter the stratification opposing the vertical mixing. We show that the treated sewage output had no influence on a) the stratification, b) the particulate and dissolved organic carbon and c) the sewage-derived organic matter. Instead, the long-term dissolved oxygen variability with the deep renewal events was mostly driven by the large-scale atmosphere-ocean conditions (heat exchange and evaporation-minus-precipitation budget) that determine the hydrographic characteristics and the winter mixing.

Viruses interfere with their host's metabolism through the expression of auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) that, until now, are mostly studied under large physicochemical gradients. Here, we focus on coastal marine ecosystems and we sequence the viral metagenome (virome) of samples with discrete levels of human-driven disturbances. We aim to describe the relevance of viromics with respect to ecological quality status, defined by the classic seawater trophic index (TRIX). Neither viral (family level) nor bacterial (family level, based on 16S rRNA sequencing) community structure correlated with TRIX. AMGs involved in the Calvin and tricarboxylic acid cycles were found at stations with poor ecological quality, supporting viral lysis by modifying the host's energy supply. AMGs involved in "non-traditional" energy-production pathways (3HP, sulfur oxidation) were found irrespective of ecological quality, highlighting the importance of recognizing the prevalent metabolic paths and their intermediate byproducts. Various AMGs explained the variability between stations with poor vs. good ecological quality. Our study confirms the pivotal role of the virome content in ecosystem functioning, acting as a "pool" of available functions that may be transferred to the hosts. Further, it suggests that AMGs could be used as an ultra-sensitive metric of energy-production pathways with relevance in the vulnerable coastal zone and its ecological quality.

This work was implemented to study the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish straits (TSS: Bosporus and Dardanelles straits) for the period 2010-2013 and to calculate winter and summer fluxes of nutrients (nitrates, phosphates) between the Aegean and Black Seas through the TSS. The brackish Black Sea waters reach the Dardanelles Strait with modified biochemical properties. The salinity and phosphates of the surface waters increased westwards. Biologically labile nutrients of Black Sea origin are utilized through biological processes in the Marmara Sea. On the other hand, increase of nutrients due to land based sources has led to eutrophication problems in the area. The sub surface water layer of Mediterranean origin is oxygen depleted (saturation<30%) and rich in nutrients. Higher oxygen values indicated water mixing of the Sea of Marmara during winter 2012. Ammonium was the predominant form of inorganic nitrogen. The study area has been classified from Moderate to Bad trophic status. Izmit Bay also faced serious eutrophication problems together with hypoxic conditions below the halocline. Nutrient fluxes through the TSS showed temporal variation in the upper and lower layers related to changes in both nutrient concentrations and the water mass volume fluxes. Surface nitrates and phosphates outflux from the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean Sea was higher than the influx from the Black Sea through Bosporus strait, indicating high enrichment of nutrients in the Sea of Marmara from anthropogenic sources.

The occurrence and spatial distribution of 158 pharmaceuticals and drugs of abuse were studied in seawater of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Saronikos Gulf and Elefsis Bay in central Aegean Sea). This area is affected by various anthropogenic pressures as it receives the treated wastewater of the greatest Athens area and off-shore input fluxes. This study constitutes the largest one in terms of number of analytes in this environmental compartment. It provides the first evidence on the occurrence of several pharmaceuticals in marine environment including amoxicillin, lidocaine, citalopram or tramadol, among others. 22 samples were collected at three different depths in 9 sampling stations in order to assess the presence and the spatial distribution of the target compounds. A multi-residue method based on solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the determination of the 158 target substances and validated for seawater sample analysis. 38 out of the 158 target compounds were detected, 15 of them with frequencies of detection equal to or higher than 50%. The highest detected values corresponded to amoxicillin, caffeine and salicylic acid, with concentrations in the range of < 5.0-127.8 ng L(-1); 5.2-78.2 ng L(-1) and < 0.4-53.3 ng L(-1), respectively. Inputs from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Athens revealed to be the main source of pollution in the Inner Saronikos Gulf, whereas, other anthropogenic pressures such as contamination from shipping activity, industrial effluents, dredging and/or inputs from land proved to be also relevant. Τhe concentrations of some compounds varied significantly with depth suggesting that currents play an important role in the dilution of the target compounds.

A large data set from the Eastern Mediterranean was analyzed to explore the relationship between seawater column variables and benthic community status. Our results showed a strong quantitative link between the seawater column variables (Chlorophyll a and Eutrophication Index) and various indicators describing benthic diversity and community composition. The percentage of benthic opportunistic species increased significantly in the stations with high trophic status of the seawater column and so did the strength of the coupling between values of seawater column and benthic indicators. The Eutrophication Index threshold level of 0.85, separating the "Bad and Poor" from "Moderate to High" conditions could serve as an acceptable critical value above which there is a readily observable change in benthic community composition.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report the effect of unilateral cochlear implantation to vestibular system using vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) by air-conduction in a sample of children aged less than 5 years. MATERIALS: This study consisted of 10 children (6 boys and 4 girls), who underwent cochlear implantation surgery at our clinic, and 8 normal hearing children (5 boys and 3 girls) matched for age. The VEMPs were performed before, 10 days, and 6 months after surgery. Both the implanted and unimplanted ears of each child were evaluated, with the cochlear implant both off and on. RESULTS: Preoperatively, six (60%) children had abnormal VEMPs responses on both ears. In the postoperative sessions, no child showed any VEMPs response on the implanted side. The VEMPs were not recorded on the unimplanted side either, except for one case. At 6 months, the VEMPs response on the unimplanted side of three children became normal when the cochlear implant was on, and in two children with the device off. CONCLUSION: In the postoperative 6-month-period, the disappearance of VEMPs suggests that the saccule of children can be extensively damaged following cochlear implantation. A recovery of VEMPs can take place on the unimplanted side, with the cochlear implant both on and off. Despite this saccular injury, the absence of clinical signs in children could be explained by their ability to effectively compensate for such vestibular deficits.

The impacts of nutrient and other chemical inputs released by a submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) on the marine environment of an oligotrophic Mediterranean coastal area (Messiniakos Gulf, SE Ionian Sea) are investigated through a multidisciplinary approach. Nutrients and organic pollutants associated with the SGD are presented to study the chemical characteristics of the SGD and to investigate its effect on the marine ecosystem in comparison to freshwater discharges of the water bodies of Messinia Prefecture. Nutrient and organic pollutant fluxes were calculated from (214)Bi-based SGD estimates. An average of 22×10(3) mol of silicate per month and 8×10(3) mol of nitrate per month were released via the SGD. Nutrient concentrations at the mouth of the SGD were three times higher than in Messiniakos Gulf, and NO3(-) was the primary Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen form discharged by SGD. Organic pollutant concentrations associated with agricultural activities were low at the SGD. The implementation of a Eutrophication Index (E.I.) showed that the water column at the SGD site corresponds to Moderate/Bad ecological quality, whereas the status switches rapidly to Good at a small distance from the SGD. Coastal areas influenced by river or sewage discharge correspond to a Moderate/Good ecological status. The BENTIX index used for the classification of the ecological quality status of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the SGD has a minor influence compared to the other freshwater discharges in Messiniakos Gulf. Though the SGD has a considerable outflow, morphology and hydrodynamics of the area favor the rapid dispersion of the upwelling water and degrades the SGD's effect even on a regional scale.
