RESUMO

Despite continuous medical advancements, traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Consequently, there is a pursuit for biomarkers that allow non-invasive monitoring of patients after cranial trauma, potentially improving clinical management and reducing complications and mortality. Aquaporins (AQPs), which are crucial for transmembrane water transport, may be significant in this context. This study included 48 patients, with 27 having acute (aSDH) and 21 having chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Blood plasma samples were collected from the participants at three intervals: the first sample before surgery, the second at 15 h, and the third at 30 h post-surgery. Plasma concentrations of AQP1, AQP2, AQP4, and AQP9 were determined using the sandwich ELISA technique. CT scans were performed on all patients pre- and post-surgery. Correlations between variables were examined using Spearman's nonparametric rank correlation coefficient. A strong correlation was found between aquaporin 2 levels and the volume of chronic subdural hematoma and midline shift. However, no significant link was found between aquaporin levels (AQP1, AQP2, AQP4, and AQP9) before and after surgery for acute subdural hematoma, nor for AQP1, AQP4, and AQP9 after surgery for chronic subdural hematoma. In the chronic SDH group, AQP2 plasma concentration negatively correlated with the midline shift measured before surgery (Spearman's ρ -0.54; p = 0.017) and positively with hematoma volume change between baseline and 30 h post-surgery (Spearman's ρ 0.627; p = 0.007). No statistically significant correlation was found between aquaporin plasma levels and hematoma volume for AQP1, AQP2, AQP4, and AQP9 in patients with acute SDH. There is a correlation between chronic subdural hematoma volume, measured radiologically, and serum AQP2 concentration, highlighting aquaporins' potential as clinical biomarkers.

Dietary supplements (DS) are used by about 30-50% of adults in developed countries. However, only a few studies have compared the characteristics of DS users in different nations. This study aimed to identify and compare selected health-related behaviors of DS users from three European countries. A total of 3,588 adults (32.08 ± 8.04 years) from Poland (1,030 females, 287 males), Germany (994 females, 190 males), and the United Kingdom (911 females, 176 males) were included in the analysis. The study was based on a self-administered survey consisting of 70 questions regarding baseline characteristics, lifestyle, eating, and health habits. The associations of the obtained results were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson Chi-Square test, and Cramer's V value. The highest percentage of DS users (56.98%, n = 2,044) had a correct body weight, while higher body weight values were observed in 39.19% (n = 1,406). In terms of lifestyle, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were noted for alcohol consumption and the level of physical activity. Fruit and vegetables were most often consumed a few times a weeks (34.67%, n = 1,244). A similar result was observed for the consumption of whole grain (37.76%, n = 1,355), dairy (39.99%, n = 1,435), eggs (49.67%, n = 1,782), and meat (51.45%, n = 1,846). Most DS users did not have a chronic disease (66.72%, n = 2,394). Among the other conditions, a frequent occurrence (a few times a weeks) of gastrointestinal problems (28.29%, n = 1,015) and concentration disorders (29.15%, n = 1,046) was noted. Cramer's V values (<0.3) indicated a weak (but significant p < 0.05) relationship between the country of residence and most of the analyzed variables. In conclusion, DS users were characterized by a healthy lifestyle with appropriate behaviors but not healthy eating habits.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report is to examine whether scaling and root planing (SRP) in one area of the mouth may affect periodontal improvement in untreated areas in the same patient, possibly through systemic effects of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients diagnosed with generalized aggressive periodontitis were randomized into treatment (n=11) and no treatment (n=9) groups. Within the treatment group, three quadrants were treated by SRP at week 0, 3, 12, and 24, while a single experimental quadrant remained untreated throughout the study. The outcome for all teeth was assessed using clinical parameters, subtraction radiography, and pathogenic bacteria levels in the subgingival flora over the 24-week study period. RESULTS: Compared with sites in no treatment patients, the treated sites in the treated patients showed a 1 mm decrease in probing depth (PD) (p<0.01) and a 0.5 mm increase in bone height (p<0.01) by 24 weeks. In untreated sites within treated subjects, however, PDs tended to improve (p=0.09) but at a reduced rate compared with treated sites. The levels of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythensis (Bacteroides forsythus) remained unchanged in untreated sites while levels of Prevetolla intermedia and Treponema denticola tended to decrease as compared with controls but did not reach significance. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that untreated sites in treated periodontitis patients show a trend towards clinical improvement and exhibit reductions in some but not all periodontopathic bacterial species tested.
