RESUMO

PURPOSE: In medication management, the ten right principles framework is an accepted global nursing standard and an important component of medication safety. Especially pediatric patients have a higher risk of harm in medication administration compared to adults. This study aimed to examine the experiences of pediatric nurses in implementing the ten right principles in safe medication management. DESIGN AND METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological approach was used in this study. The study was conducted with 16 pediatric nurses in a public hospital's Pediatric Service and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Pediatric nurses' medication practices were observed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the nurses after the observation. Observations were conducted using an observation tool, and interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: In this study, it was observed that although pediatric nurses generally adhered to the ten right principles, they had the most difficulties with the right dose and time principles. As a result of the interviews conducted after the observation, two themes (factors facilitating the implementation of the ten right principles and difficulties in implementing the ten right principles) were formed. CONCLUSIONS: The findings revealed that pediatric nurses achieved safe and effective medication administration and generally adhered to the ten right principles. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This study highlights the positive contribution of pediatric nurses to patient safety by using multiple sources of information and clinical reasoning strategies despite the difficulties they experience in drug administration.

Perinatal loss is a traumatic experience for parents. This research was conducted to evaluate the experiences and needs of parents after perinatal loss. An interpretative phenomenological study was carried out between January 2021 and July 2022 with 6 parental pairs (12 people in total, 6 mothers and 6 fathers) who experienced a perinatal loss. Participants were reached by snowball sampling method. Data were collected using semi-structured audio recording interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The themes of this study were determined as "attributing meaning to loss", "fragmented parenting roles and expectations", "changing relationships", "expectations from healthcare professionals", and "emotional responses". Five sub-themes were created from the emotional responses theme which included. These are sadness and pain, denial, anger, guilt and fear. In the study, it was concluded that the experience of perinatal loss may have negative consequences on the psychological health of the parents. Therefore, specific, professional, adequate nursing support and continuity of support are needed to help parents cope with perinatal losses.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of right and left semi-elevated side-lying positions on the feeding performance and skills of bottle-fed preterm infants. DESIGN: A single-group, crossover experimental study. SETTINGS: Level 3 NICU of a training and research hospital in Istanbul. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 60 preterm infants born at 24 to 36 6/7 weeks gestation. METHODS: We collected data using an infant information form, feeding observation form, and the Turkish version of the Early Feeding Skills Assessment (EFS-Turkish). For each infant, we collected data for two feeds: one in the right and one in the left semi-elevated side-lying position. RESULTS: We found no difference between the right and left semi-elevated side-lying positions in the volume or percentage of food taken (p = .582 and p = .625, respectively), feeding duration (p = .901), or feeding efficiency (p = .423). We observed no significant differences between feedings in the left and right semi-elevated side-lying positions in mean EFS-Turkish total score (p = .251) or subscale scores (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Neonatal nurses can feed preterm infants in both directions of the semi-elevated side-lying position when following evidence-based feeding guidelines.
