During experimental utilization on the dog (per os) of several types of materials capable to be modified by the liver after digestive absorption, sugars appeared naturally opaques in the gastric cavity and so they could substitute in C.T. to the habitual materials of contrast, we also notice some belated modifications on intra hepatic density that might be in relation with the metabolism of intra hepatic glucose.

Iodolipids have been used as a contrast medium for hepatosplenic computed tomography (CT) in 148 patients. In all but two of these cases, the contrast material was injected by the intravenous route. The method appears to be safe due to the marked reduction of dosage in CT compared with conventional radiographic iodolipid hepatography. This decreased dosage is made possible by the improved density and spatial resolution of CT. Pictorial and histographic densitometric analysis of normal and abnormal liver after iodolipid administration yields considerable diagnostic improvement.

From the investigation of 180 patients, the preliminary results of tomo-densitometric study ("scanning") of the locomotor system are presented. The technique permits investigation in the transverse spatial plane, which is ignored in conventional radiology. We feel this to be a major advantage in osteo-articular disease, especially for the spine (measurement of the diameter of the canal, analysis of the posterior structures), the sacro-iliac joints, hip joints (easy-measurement of the angles of anteversion) and patello-femoral joints. The densitometric measurement is the second advantage. It allows the estimation of the degree of bony calcification of any bone in the body with great precision. The preliminary study already demonstrates the limitations of the technique (exploration of a single transverse plane, edge effect, and necessity for a new anatomy).
