RESUMO

We describe a case of a soft tissue neoplasm in the infraorbital region of a 31-year-old African-American man that met histologic and immunohistochemical criteria for solitary fibrous tumor. This uncommon spindle cell neoplasm was first described in the pleura, but it has since been reported in many other soft tissue locations. The lesion was locally aggressive and successfully treated by local excision. Solitary fibrous tumor can be locally destructive and can occur in a wide variety of tissues or organs; this is the seventh published case of solitary fibrous tumor in the orofacial region.

RESUMO

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology uses telepathology and telemedicine programs to support its mission of providing pathology consultation, education, and research. The telepathology service is based on a static imaging or "store-and-forward" approach using both proprietary equipment and open systems through the Internet. Initiated in 1993, the service provides rapid expert consultation to pathologists globally. Diagnoses are provided by pathologists in 22 specialized departments. Educational programs are delivered through the World Wide Web. Category I continuing medical education credits can be obtained through Internet-based courses. Research activities are focused on forensic applications and the creation of image databases.

RESUMO

Forensic dental identification of casualties during Operation Desert Storm was performed at the Dover Port Mortuary, Dover Air Force Base, under the auspices of the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner. A total of 251 dental identifications were attempted and 244 individuals were positively identified by dental comparison. The panoramic radiographs on file at the Central Panograph Storage Facility were the primary antemortem records utilized in establishing the dental identification. The inability to establish a positive dental identification was most often the result of a lack of available antemortem dental records.
