BACKGROUND: A growing number of recent studies have explored underlying activity in the brain by measuring electroencephalography (EEG) in people with depression. However, the consistency of findings on EEG microstates in patients with depression is poor, and few studies have reported the relationship between EEG microstates, cognitive scales, and depression severity scales. AIM: To investigate the EEG microstate characteristics of patients with depression and their association with cognitive functions. METHODS: A total of 24 patients diagnosed with depression and 32 healthy controls were included in this study using the Structured Clinical Interview for Disease for The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. We collected information relating to demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as data from the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS; Chinese version) and EEG. RESULTS: Compared with the controls, the duration, occurrence, and contribution of microstate C were significantly higher [depression (DEP): Duration 84.58 ± 24.35, occurrence 3.72 ± 0.56, contribution 30.39 ± 8.59; CON: Duration 72.77 ± 10.23, occurrence 3.41 ± 0.36, contribution 24.46 ± 4.66; Duration F = 6.02, P = 0.049; Occurrence F = 6.19, P = 0.049; Contribution F = 10.82, P = 0.011] while the duration, occurrence, and contribution of microstate D were significantly lower (DEP: Duration 70.00 ± 15.92, occurrence 3.18 ± 0.71, contribution 22.48 ± 8.12; CON: Duration 85.46 ± 10.23, occurrence 3.54 ± 0.41, contribution 28.25 ± 5.85; Duration F = 19.18, P < 0.001; Occurrence F = 5.79, P = 0.050; Contribution F = 9.41, P = 0.013) in patients with depression. A positive correlation was observed between the visuospatial/constructional scores of the RBANS scale and the transition probability of microstate class C to B (r = 0.405, P = 0.049). CONCLUSION: EEG microstate, especially C and D, is a possible biomarker in depression. Patients with depression had a more frequent transition from microstate C to B, which may relate to more negative rumination and visual processing.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human health, and as a potential animal feed, the Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) fly is rich in protein and fat. By using different concentrations of sodium selenite (0, 30, 50, 70 mg kg-1), the possibility of biological Se enrichment in C. megacephala (Fabricius) maggots (CMMs) was investigated. The accumulation, Se speciation, enzymatic activity, and concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) in the maggots were also determined. Transcriptomics was also used to investigate the mechanism of the Se response to CMM genes. The results showed that the CMMs had a survival rate of > 80% at Se exposure concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 mg kg-1. The optimal concentration of sodium selenite for CMM growth was 50 mg kg-1, and the weight, protein content, and total Se accumulation of the larvae (10.8 g, 53.5%, and 72.6 ± 3.36 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively) were considerably higher than the control and other exposure doses (p < 0.05). In addition, Se improved the ability of maggots to absorb Cu and Zn, decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid peroxidation, but improved the antioxidant activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Furthermore, Se negatively affected the absorption of Cd and Cr. According to the transcriptomic findings, Se supplementation can boost protein synthesis and control both antioxidant and non-antioxidant enzyme activity in CMMs. Therefore, our findings showed that Se-enriched CMMs may counteract the toxicity of Cd and Cr, and Se is an effective supplement for improving the consumption safety of cultured animals fed containing CMMs.

Studies often cite climate issues in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) employment to explain the lack of diversity by gender and race. Yet, little research directly attends to gender and racial differences in the college experiences, expected family roles, and ideological beliefs about gender that create the racialized "gendered selves" graduates bring to STEM occupations. We examine the experiences and beliefs of graduating chemistry and chemical engineering majors at two U.S. universities, showing where they coalesced into intersectional gender groups whose work and family involvement and desired working conditions substantially differ. Gendered family expectations and workplace beliefs at labor market entry subsequently predict career confidence and family-based limits on job searching, both important factors affecting retention in STEM employment. We find that women at career entry are more likely to have lower confidence and more limits on their job search, though patterns differ by ethnicity. This occurs in part because both male and female graduates who report greater expected family responsibility also report lower confidence and more limits in job searching. Overall, aspirational fulfillment is easier for men whose intersectional gender identities fit the dominant STEM workplace culture, and harder for women and non-white graduates with more flexible gender ideologies and greater anticipated household responsibilities.
