OBJECTIVES: Computed tomographic perfusion (CTP) can play an auxiliary role in the selection of patients with acute ischemic stroke for endovascular treatment. However, data on CTP in non-stroke patients with intracranial arterial stenosis are scarce. We aimed to investigate images in patients with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis to determine the detection accuracy and interpretation time of large/medium-artery stenosis or occlusion when combining computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and CTP images. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 39 patients with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis from our hospital database from January 2021 to August 2023 who underwent head CTP, head CTA, and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Head CTA images were generated from the CTP data, and the diagnostic performance for each artery was assessed. Two readers independently interpreted the CTA images before and after CTP, and the results were analyzed. RESULTS: After adding CTP maps, the accuracy (area under the curve) of diagnosing internal carotid artery (R1: 0.847 vs. 0.907, R2: 0.776 vs. 0.887), middle cerebral artery (R1: 0.934 vs. 0.933, R2: 0.927 vs. 0.981), anterior cerebral artery (R1: 0.625 vs. 0.750, R2: 0.609 vs. 0.750), vertebral artery (R1: 0.743 vs. 0.764, R2: 0.748 vs. 0.846), and posterior cerebral artery (R1: 0.390 vs. 0.575, R2: 0.390 vs. 0.585) occlusions increased for both readers (p < 0.05). Mean interpretation time (R1: 72.4 ± 6.1 s vs. 67.7 ± 6.4 s, R2: 77.7 ± 3.8 s vs. 72.6 ± 4.7 s) decreased when using a combination of both images both readers (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The addition of CTP images improved the accuracy of interpreting CTA images and reduced the interpretation time in asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis. These findings support the use of CTP imaging in patients with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis.

With the rapid development of medical imaging technology and computer technology, the medical imaging artificial intelligence of computer-aided diagnosis based on machine learning has become an important part of modern medical diagnosis. With the application of medical image security technology, people realize that the difficulty of its development is the inherent defect of advanced image processing technology. This paper introduces the background of colorectal cancer diagnosis and monitoring, and then carries out academic research on the medical imaging artificial intelligence of colorectal cancer diagnosis and monitoring and machine learning, and finally summarizes it with the advanced computational intelligence system for the application of safe medical imaging.In the experimental part, this paper wants to carry out the staging preparation stage. It was concluded that the staging preparation stage of group Y was higher than that of group X and the difference was statistically significant. Then the overall accuracy rate of multimodal medical image fusion was 69.5% through pathological staging comparison. Finally, the diagnostic rate, the number of patients with effective treatment and satisfaction were analyzed. Finally, the average diagnostic rate of the new diagnosis method was 8.75% higher than that of the traditional diagnosis method. With the development of computer science and technology, the application field was expanding constantly. Computer aided diagnosis technology combining computer and medical images has become a research hotspot.

In the context of the relentless evolution of network and communication technologies, the need for enhanced communication content and quality continues to escalate. Addressing the demands of data collection from the abundance of terminals within Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, this paper presents an advanced approach to multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data collection and path planning tailored for extensive terminal accessibility. This paper focuses on optimizing the complex interplay between task completion time and task volume equilibrium. To this end, a novel strategy is devised that integrates sensor area partitioning and flight trajectory planning for multiple UAVs, forming an optimization framework geared towards minimizing task completion duration. The core idea of this work involves designing an innovative k-means algorithm capable of balancing data quantities within each cluster, thereby achieving balanced sensor node partitioning based on data volume. Then, the UAV flight trajectory paths are discretely modeled, and a grouped, improved genetic algorithm is used to solve the Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (MTSP). The algorithm introduces a 2-opt optimization operator to improve the computational efficiency of the genetic algorithm. Empirical validation through comprehensive simulations clearly underscores the efficacy of the proposed approach. In particular, the method demonstrates a remarkable capacity to rectify the historical issue of diverse task volumes among multiple UAVs, all the while significantly reducing task completion times. Moreover, its convergence rate substantially outperforms that of the conventional genetic algorithm, attesting to its computational efficiency. This paper contributes an innovative and efficient paradigm to improve the problem of data collection from IoT terminals through the use of multiple UAVs. As a result, it not only augments the efficiency and balance of task distribution but also showcases the potential of tailored algorithm solutions for realizing optimal outcomes in complex engineering scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Normothermic ex situ perfusion of vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) necessitates high oxygen demand and, thus, increased metabolic activity, which, in turn, requires the use of blood-based perfusion solutions. However, blood-derived perfusates, in turn, constitute an antigenic load. To circumvent this immunogenic problem, we used a perfusate enriched with acellular dextrane oxygen microcarriers to perfuse rat hindlimbs. METHODS: Rat hindlimbs (n = 11) were perfused with either (non-), oxygenated dextrane-enriched Phoxilium, or Phoxilium enriched with dextrane oxygen microcarriers (MO2) for 12 h at 37 °C or stored on ice. Oxygenation of the skeletal muscle was assessed with Raman spectroscopy, tissue pO2-probes, and analysis of the perfusate. Transmission electronic microscopy was utilized to assess the ultrastructure of mitochondria of the skeletal muscle. RESULTS: For all evaluated conditions, ischemia time until perfusion was comparable (22.91 ± 1.64 min; p = 0.1559). After 12 h, limb weight increased significantly by at least 81%, up to 124% in the perfusion groups, and by 27% in the static cold storage (SCS) group. Raman spectroscopy signals of skeletal muscle did not differ substantially among the groups during either perfusion or static cold storage across the duration of the experiment. While the total number of skeletal muscle mitochondria decreased significantly compared to baseline, mitochondrial diameter increased in the perfusion groups and the static cold storage group. CONCLUSION: The use of oxygen microcarriers in ex situ perfusion of VCA with acellular perfusates under normothermic conditions for 12 h facilitates the maintenance of mitochondrial structure, as well as a subsequent recovery of mitochondrial redox status over time, while markers of muscle injury were lower compared to conventional oxygenated acellular perfusates.

PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to determine whether intratumoral injections of a liquid oxygen solution are effective at boosting radiation-induced abscopal effects. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A liquid oxygen solution, comprising slow-release polymer-shelled oxygen microparticles, was fabricated and injected intratumorally to locally elevate tumor oxygen levels before and after treatment with radiation therapy. Changes in tumor volume were monitored. In a subset of studies, CD8-positive cells were depleted and the experiments were repeated. Histologic analyses of the tumor tissues were performed to quantify the concentration of infiltrating immune cells. RESULTS: Daily intratumoral injections of oxygen-filled microparticles significantly retarded primary and secondary tumor growth, boosted infiltration of cytotoxic T cells, and improved overall survival when used as an adjuvant to radiation therapy. The findings also demonstrated that efficacy requires both radiation and oxygen, suggesting that they act synergistically to enhance in situ vaccination and systemic antitumor immune responses. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the potential advantages of intratumoral injections of a liquid oxygen solution as a strategy to boost radiation-induced abscopal effects, and the findings warrant future efforts toward clinical translation of the injectable liquid oxygen solution.

White matter hyperintensity (WMH) is associated with vascular hemodynamic alterations and reflects white matter injury. To date, the sex difference of tract-specific WMH and the relationship between high blood pressure (BP) and tract-specific WMH remain unclear. We recruited 515 subjects from the Shanghai Changfeng study (range 53-89 years, mean age 67.33 years). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were collected and used to calculate pulse pressure (PP). Magnetic resonance T1 and T2 FLAIR images were acquired to measure WMH and calculate WMH index. The ANCOVA test was performed to test the difference between sexes, and the linear regression model was used to examine the associations between BP and WMH index. Men showed higher WMH index than women in all white matter tracts (p < .001, respectively) except for the bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and its left temporal part (tSLF). High SBP and PP was associated with a lower WMH index on the left corticospinal tract (CST), SLF, tSLF and right cingulum in hippocampus (p ≤ .001, respectively) in women, while high DBP was associated with a higher WMH index on the bilateral CST (left p < .001; right p = .001), left inferior longitudinal fasciculus (p < .001) and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (p = .002) in men. Men tend to have more WMH compared to women. A high SBP/PP relates to a lower WMH burden in women. This suggests that women could benefit from higher blood pressure in older age.

Colloids, known as volume expanders, have been used as resuscitation fluids for hypovolemic shock for decades, as they increase plasma oncotic pressure and expand intravascular volume. However, recent studies show that commonly used synthetic colloids have adverse interactions with human biological systems. In this work, a low-fouling amine(N)-oxide-based zwitterionic polymer as an alternative volume expander with improved biocompatibility and efficacy is designed. It is demonstrated that the polymer possesses antifouling ability, resisting cell interaction and deposition in major organs, and is rapidly cleared via renal filtration and hepatic circulation, reducing the risk of long-term side effects. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo studies show an absence of adverse effects on hemostasis or any acute safety risks. Finally, it is shown that, in a head-to-head comparison with existing colloids and plasma, the zwitterionic polymer serves as a more potent oncotic agent for restoring intravascular volume in a hemorrhagic shock model. The design of N-oxide-based zwitterionic polymers may lead to the development of alternative fluid therapies to treat hypovolemic shock and to improve fluid management in general.

Liquids with permanent microporosity can absorb larger quantities of gas molecules than conventional solvents1, providing new opportunities for liquid-phase gas storage, transport and reactivity. Current approaches to designing porous liquids rely on sterically bulky solvent molecules or surface ligands and, thus, are not amenable to many important solvents, including water2-4. Here we report a generalizable thermodynamic strategy to preserve permanent microporosity and impart high gas solubilities to liquid water. Specifically, we show how the external and internal surface chemistry of microporous zeolite and metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystals can be tailored to promote the formation of stable dispersions in water while maintaining dry networks of micropores that are accessible to gas molecules. As a result of their permanent microporosity, these aqueous fluids can concentrate gases, including oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2), to much higher densities than are found in typical aqueous environments. When these fluids are oxygenated, record-high capacities of O2 can be delivered to hypoxic red blood cells, highlighting one potential application of this new class of microporous liquids for physiological gas transport.

(1) Background: The aerial part of G. uralensis had pharmacological effects against chronic non-bacterial prostatitis (CNP), and flavonoids are the main efficacy components. The purpose of this study was to obtain the pharmacokinetics, prostate distribution and metabolic characteristics of some flavonoids in rats. (2) Methods: The prototype flavones and the metabolites of four representative flavonoids, namely puerarin, luteolin, kaempferol and pinocembrin in plasma, prostate, urine and feces of rats were analyzed by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS. In addition, the pharmacokinetic parameters in plasma and distribution of prostate of four components were analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. (3) Results: In total, 22, 17, 22 and 11 prototype flavones were detected in the prostate, plasma, urine and feces, respectively. The metabolites of puerarin in the prostate are hydrolysis and glucose-conjugated products, the metabolites of kaempferol and luteolin in the prostate are methylation and glucuronidation, and the metabolites of pinocembrin in the prostate are naringenin, oxidation, sulfation, methylation and glucuronidation products. The t1/2 of puerarin, luteolin, kaempferol and pinocembrin was 6.43 ± 0.20, 31.08 ± 1.17, 18.98 ± 1.46 and 13.18 ± 0.72 h, respectively. The concentrations of the four flavonoids in prostate were ranked as kaempferol > pinocembrin > luteolin > puerarin. (4) Conclusions: Methylation and glucuronidation metabolites were the main metabolites detected in the prostate. A sensitive and validated HPLC−MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of puerarin, luteolin, kaempferol and pinocembrin in rat plasma and prostate was described, and it was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic and prostate distribution studies.

The fiber-resin interface is an important component that significantly affects mechanical properties of composites. Random vibration-assisted vacuum processing (RVAVP), a new method to improve the adhesion of the fiber-resin interface, was presented. The effects of different curing processes on mechanical properties were comprehensively assessed by combining the fiber push-out test, finite element model simulation, cure monitoring approach, and short-beam three-point bending test, and the correlation between fiber volume fraction and mechanical properties was quantified by a facile thermogravimetric analysis-based methodology. The results revealed that application of random vibration during the curing process can promote the impregnation of resin into fibers and impede the growth of interface defects while improving mechanical properties at the same time. For this reason, the laminates produced by RVAVP exhibited the average interfacial shear strength of 78.02 MPa and the average interface fracture toughness of 51.7 J/m2, which is obtained a 48.26% and 90.77% improvement compared with the 0 MPa autoclave process. With the large observed increase in micro-mechanical properties, the average interlaminar shear strength of 93.91 MPa showed a slight reduction of 5.07% compared with the 0.6 MPa autoclave process. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties tended to be stable at the fiber volume fraction of 65.5%.

BACKGROUND: The frequently discovered incidental findings (IFs) from imaging observations are increasing. The IFs show the potential clues of structural abnormalities underlying cognitive decline in elders. Detecting brain IFs and their relationship with cognitive and behavioral functions helps provide the information for clinical strategies. METHODS: Five hundred and seventy-nine participants were recruited in the Shanghai Changfeng Study. All participants performed the demographic, biochemical, and cognitive functions and gait speed assessment and underwent the high-resolution multimodal magnetic resonance imaging scans. We calculated the detection rate of brain IFs. The association between cardiovascular risk factors and IFs and the associations between IFs and cognitive and motor functions were assessed using regression models. The relationships among gray matter volume, cognitive function, and gait speed were assessed with/without adjusting the IFs to evaluate the effects of potential IFs confounders. RESULTS: IFs were found in a total of 578 subjects with a detection rate of 99.8%. Age and blood pressure were the most significant cardiovascular risk factors correlated with IFs. IFs were found to be negatively associated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination, and gait speed. The gray matter volume was found to be positively correlated with the cognitive function without adjusting the white matter hyperintensity but not if adjusted. CONCLUSION: IFs are commonly found in the elderly population and related to brain functions. The adequate intervention of IFs related cardiovascular risk factors that may slow down the progression of brain function decline. We also suggest that IFs should be considered as confounding factors that may affect cognitive issues on the structural neuroimaging researches in aging or diseases.

Over the past decade, there have been many attempts to engineer systems capable of delivering oxygen to overcome the effects of both systemic and local hypoxia that occurs as a result of traumatic injury, cell transplantation, or tumor growth, among many others. Despite progress in this field, which has led to a new class of oxygen-generating biomaterials, most reported techniques lack the tunability necessary for independent control over the oxygen flux (volume per unit time) and the duration of delivery, both of which are key parameters for overcoming tissue hypoxia of varying etiologies. Here, we show that these critical parameters can be effectively manipulated using hyperbarically-loaded polymeric microcapsules (PMC). PMCs are micron-sized particles with hollow cores and polymeric shells. We show that oxygen delivery through PMCs is dependent on its permeability through the polymeric shell, the shell thickness, and the pressure gradient across the shell. We also demonstrate that incorporating an intermediate oil layer between the polymeric shell and the gas core prevents rapid outgassing by effectively lowering the resultant pressure gradient across the polymeric membrane following depressurization.

BACKGROUND: To determine the effect of region of interest (ROI) on tumor's apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and interobserver variability in thyroid nodules. METHODS: Thirty-three individuals with 45 pathologically-confirmed thyroid nodules were assessed by preoperative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with b values of 0 and 400 s/mm2, respectively. Two readers evaluated the ADC values of lesions based on three ROI techniques: whole-volume, single-slice and small solid-sample groups. Interobserver variability was analyzed for all ROI techniques, and the mean ADCs of benign and cancerous thyroid nodules were compared. RESULTS: For the mean ADCs of non-cancerous thyroid nodules, average differences and limits of agreement (LOAs) between readers were 0.00 [- 0.17-0.17] × 10- 3 mm2/s for whole-volume ROI (ICC = 0.967), 0.00 [- 0.26-0.26] × 10- 3 mm2/s for single-slice ROI (ICC = 0.932) and - 0.02 [- 0.38-0.41] × 10- 3 mm2/s for small solid-sample ROI (ICC = 0.823). For the mean ADCs of cancerous thyroid nodules, average differences and LOAs between readers were - 0.05 [- 0.23-0.13] × 10- 3 mm2/s (ICC = 0.885), 0.01 [- 0.23-0.25] × 10- 3 mm2/s (ICC = 0.839) and - 0.07 [- 0.52-0.39] × 10- 3 mm2/s (ICC = 0.579) for the three ROI methods, respectively. The mean ADC values were more scattered in the small solid-sample ROI group in comparison with the whole-volume and single-slice groups, in noncancerous and cancerous specimens. Of all three ROI techniques, whole-volume ROI-determined ADC had the highest combined sensitivity (80.0%), specificity (88.3%) and Youden index (0.683), with a cut-off of 1.84 × 10- 3 mm2/s. CONCLUSIONS: The ROI method overtly affects ADC measurements in benign and cancerous thyroid nodules. Small solid-sample ROI yielded the worst interobserver variability of average ADC measurements.

The ability to tailor acoustic cavitation of contrast agents is pivotal for ultrasound applications in enhanced imaging, drug delivery, and cancer therapy, etc. A biopolymer-based system of microbubbles and nanobubbles was developed as acoustic reporters that consist of extremely porous hard shells. Despite the existence of an incompressible shell, these porous contrast agents exhibited strong nonlinear acoustic response under very low acoustic pressure, e.g, harmonics, characteristic of free gas bubbles. The large air/water surface area within the transmural capillaries are believed to facilitate oscillation of the inner gas core. Furthermore, the acoustic cavitation can be tailored by variation in polymer structures. This synthetically based platform offers insight for the rational design of advanced acoustic biomaterials.

Clinical patients with premature ejaculation(PE) often present with poor psychological state. This study investigated whether there is a difference in the psychological state of PE and non-PE in outpatients, and whether there is a correlation between ejaculatory latency and psychological disorders. We studied demographics informations and psychological indicators for PE patients and control group, including the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and recorded the ejaculatory latency. We analyzed the relationship between PE and psychological disorders by the Pearson correlation and multifactorial logistic regression. There were significant differences in SAS(p < 0.01) and SDS(p < 0.05) scores between the PE and non-PE groups. However, Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was no correlation between ejaculatory latency and SDS. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that anxiety(p < 0.05) and sleep quality(p < 0.05) were closely related to the attack of PE. The incidence of anxiety and depression in PE patients is high, anxiety is a risk factor of PE. Clinicians should pay close attention to the psychological state and sleep quality of patients with PE.

Encapsulation and delivery of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other therapeutic gases, using polymeric microcapsules (PMCs) is an emerging strategy to deliver gas as an injectable therapeutic. The gas cargo is stored within the PMC core and its release is mediated by the physiochemical properties of the capsule shell. Although use of PMCs for the rapid delivery of gases has been well described, methods which tune the material properties of PMCs for sustained release of gas are lacking. In this work, we describe a simple method for the high-yield production of gas-in-oil-filled PMCs with tunable sizes and core gas content from preformed polymers using the sequential phase separation and self-emulsification of emulsion-based templates. We demonstrate that prolonged gas release occurs from gas-in-oil PMCs loaded with oxygen and carbon dioxide gas, each of which could have significant clinical applications.

RESUMO

Intravascular oxygen delivery holds great potential to treat numerous hypoxic conditions and emergencies, including pulmonary disorders, hypoxic tumors, hemorrhagic shock, stroke, cardiac arrest and so on. Tremendous effort has been made in the past to find material solutions for the development of intravenous oxygen carriers and have ranged from blood substitutes to microbubbles with limited success. This paper highlights previous and recent progress in perfluorocarbon-emulsions and microbubbles as intravenous gas carriers, including concerns over their long-term stability, in vivo safety profiles, and oxygen transport efficacy. Their use as potential resuscitative therapeutics for treating various types of cardiac arrest is also discussed.

A new approach has been developed to prepare stable microbubbles (MBs) by interfacial nanoprecipitation of bioabsorbable polymers at air/liquid interfaces. This facile method offers robust control over the morphology and chemophysical properties of MBs by simple chemical modifications. This approach is amenable to large-scale manufacturing, and is useful to develop functional MBs for advanced biomedical applications. To demonstrate this, a MB-based intravenous oxygen carrier was created that undergoes pH-triggered self-elimination. Intravenous injection of previous MBs increased the risk of pulmonary vascular obstruction. However, we show, for the first time, that our current design is superior, as they 1) yielded no evidence of acute risks in rodents, and 2) improved the survival in a disease model of asphyxial cardiac arrest (from 0 to 100 %), a condition that affects more than 100 000 in-hospital patients, and carries a mortality of about 90 %.

Oligo(Glu70 -co-Leu30 ), a peptide synthesized by protease catalysis, is functionalized at the N-terminus with a 4-pentenoyl unit and grafted to polyLSL[6'Ac,6″Ac], a glycopolymer prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization of lactonic sophorolipid diacetate. First, polyLSL[6'Ac,6"Ac] fiber mats are fabricated by electrospinning. Oxidation of the fiber mats and subsequent reaction with cysteamine lead to thiol-functionalized fiber mats with no significant morphology changes. Grafting of the alkene-modified oligopeptide to thiol-functionalized polyLSL[6'Ac,6″Ac] fiber mats is achieved via "thiol-ene" click reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis to characterize peptide grafting reveals that about 50 mol% of polyLSL[6'Ac,6''Ac] repeat units at fiber surfaces are decorated with a peptide moiety, out of which about 1/3 of the oligo(Glu70 -co-Leu30 ) units are physically adsorbed to polyLSL[6'Ac,6''Ac]. The results of this work pave the way to precise engineering of polyLSL fiber mats that can be decorated with a potentially wide range of molecules that tailor surface chemistry and biological properties.

A continuous supply of oxygen to tissues is vital to life and interruptions in its delivery are poorly tolerated. The treatment of low-blood oxygen tensions requires restoration of functional airways and lungs. Unfortunately, severe oxygen deprivation carries a high mortality rate and can make otherwise-survivable illnesses unsurvivable. Thus, an effective and rapid treatment for hypoxemia would be revolutionary. The i.v. injection of oxygen bubbles has recently emerged as a potential strategy to rapidly raise arterial oxygen tensions. In this report, we describe the fabrication of a polymer-based intravascular oxygen delivery agent. Polymer hollow microparticles (PHMs) are thin-walled, hollow polymer microcapsules with tunable nanoporous shells. We show that PHMs are easily charged with oxygen gas and that they release their oxygen payload only when exposed to desaturated blood. We demonstrate that oxygen release from PHMs is diffusion-controlled, that they deliver approximately five times more oxygen gas than human red blood cells (per gram), and that they are safe and effective when injected in vivo. Finally, we show that PHMs can be stored at room temperature under dry ambient conditions for at least 2 mo without any effect on particle size distribution or gas carrying capacity.
