RESUMO
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly progressing infection with significant morbidity and high mortality rates. Rarely does necrotizing fasciitis appear in the head and neck region; rather, it usually affects the limbs and abdomen of patients. This article presents our institution's experience with the disease and provides a discussion of propoied treatment options.

Superior orbital fissure syndrome is an infrequently encountered entity with a unique presentation and significant morbidity. This article reviews the background of the syndrome, treatments in the literature, and discusses a recent case with treatment strategy.
RESUMO
Although not an uncommon occurrence from displaced zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, localized air emphysema tends to resolve without consequence. Nevertheless, when accentuated by nose blowing or other forms of positive pressure soon after trauma, local air emphysema can spread via fascial planes into distant sites.

Manifestations of systemic diseases can appear in the oral-maxillofacial area. They can be microbial, hematologic, endocrine, metabolic, genetic, nutritional, granulomatous and immunologic, and are based upon the disease. We present an extremely rare case in which deposits of crystallized monosodium urate appeared in the right paranasal region.

The diagnosis and management of mandible fractures in the pediatric patient population can pose multiple challenges to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Resorbable plates and screws for fixation in this population are both well tolerated and effective. They enable realignment and stable positioning of rapidly healing fracture segments, while obviating any potential impediments to long-term metal retention.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a well documented and widely accepted intracanal irrigant used to disinfect the pulp space in endodontic therapy. NaOCl can be an extremely cytotoxic material; therefore, care must be taken with its use. The authors present a case of periradicular extravasation of NaOCl with sequelae of pain, swelling, ecchymosis and parasthesia consistent with a chemical burn. The patient was treated with a nonsurgical medical management approach. She experienced a complete resolution of signs and symptoms, aside from a persistent residual focal parasthesia.

Routine CT studies of suspected closed head injury encompass the calvaria to the cranial base. It is at the cranial base that the glenoid fossa appears. An "empty glenoid fossa" sign is when there is no condyle associated within the fossa. This is suggestive of a condylar neck fracture.

The vital need to retain closed-circuit airways during maxillofacial surgery has led to several innovations in anesthetic tube placement and stabilization. Several designs and alterations of endotracheal tubes have been described and are currently in use. These range from suturing the tubing to the patient's scalp to fabricating maxillofacial prostheses. In this report, an easy method for securing anesthetic tubes is described. This technique has been used successfully at our institution.

Emergency cricothyrotomy is a potentially lifesaving surgical procedure used to gain prompt access to an otherwise compromised and inaccessible airway. The purpose of this photoessay is to demonstrate the technique of the procedure in a step-by-step manner so that the physician can perform this intervention with ease and facility in the most stressful of circumstances.
