RESUMO

The benefits of emotional intelligence and their alleviating impact on work-related stress among teachers have been gaining salience in this research field. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between emotional abilities and the burnout syndrome and whether the affective balance mediates this interplay. Using a structural equation modeling framework with self-report data from 200 schoolteachers aged between 22 to 64 years (M = 44.97, SD = 9.31, 73.50% women), the study design was a cross-sectional one. Results showed significant direct and indirect effects of mood clarity and emotional repair on all four burnout dimensions, while attention did not predict teacher burntout. Positive affect mediated the relationship between emotional intelligence and enthusiasm toward the job, while negative affect mediated the association between emotional abilities and negative burnout symptoms. Our findings suggest that enhanced emotional abilities are directly associated with lower levels of work-related stress, however, negative affect restrains this positive influence. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

Adolescents' problematic use of the internet and the risk of sexual online victimization are an increasing concern among families, researchers, professionals and society. This study aimed to analyze the interplay between adolescents' addiction to social networks and internet, body self-esteem and sexual-erotic risk behavior online: sexting, sextortion and grooming. While sexting refers to the voluntary engagement in texting sexual-erotic messages, sextortion and grooming are means of sexual-erotic victimization through the use of the internet. Participants were 1763 adolescents (51% girls), aged 12 to 16 years (M = 14.56; SD = 1.16), from public (n = 1068; 60.60%) and private (n = 695; 39.40%) high schools in the Basque Country (Spain). We carried out structural equation modeling (SEM) using Mplus to assess the mediating effects of body self-esteem in the relationship between addiction to social media and internet and sexual-erotic risk behavior. The results showed that internet addiction predicts online sexual victimization; specifically, the best predictors of sexting, sextortion and grooming victimization were symptoms of internet addiction and geek behavior. Body self-esteem and sexting mediated the relationship between internet addiction and sexual online victimization in adolescents. These results highlight the importance of attending to adolescents' mental health regarding their online behavior, considering the risk and protective factors involved, due to its close association with online sexual victimization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The risk of child grooming has spread exponentially with the massive access of adolescents to social networks and the internet. The aim of the study was to examine the personal factors (body self-esteem and disinhibition) and erotic-sexual factors (sexual initiation strategies and erotic-pornographic sexting) that predict grooming. METHOD: The sample was comprised of 1,200 adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years (M = 14.54, SD = 1.17; 50.83% girls). A cross-sectional design with self-report data was used and structural equation modeling (SEM) with mediation analysis was performed. RESULTS: The results indicated two paths explaining child grooming: 1) physical attractiveness and disinhibition are indirectly associated with grooming through erotic sexting and direct sexual initiation strategies; both of which partially mediate this relationship; 2) disinhibited behavior has an indirect impact on grooming; pornographic sexting and coercive strategies acting as mediators. The semi-partial mediation model explains 54% of the variance of grooming. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the urgent need to implement prevention programs considering these attitudes and behaviors that function as precursors of victimization and the risk of falling into pedophile networks.

Body image and other psychological variables have been influenced by social networks. One of the most widespread phenomena is the sexting that has increased in adolescents and is of serious concern. Objectives: a) know the use of RS; b) Analyze the frequency of aesthetic versus erotic virtual publications in adolescents according to sex. Assessment instruments: Virtual image of the social network questionnaire (Maganto y Peris, 2011). Participants: 100 adolescents’ boys and girls from 13 to 15 years. Results: The use of the social network is widespread, not just statistical differences of sex. The virtual image is mostly aesthetic, but they published a high percentage of erotic, sensual and provocative photography. In addition, adolescents publish photographs without consent, and probably in the future they repent of the photographs that have been published. Conclusions: Is a challenge to know the use and risks of social networks in order to develop preventive programmes (AU)
