In a citizen of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos who has entered the German Democratic Republic for professional training a lung involvement in the shape of a circular focus was established after pleurisy. Hospitalization followed from suspected tuberculosis. Worm eggs of a lung fluke were parasitologically detected in a transthoracic fine needle biopsy. After administering Biltricide the patient undergoes follow-up treatment as an outpatient. No symptoms have ever occurred since. In a differential diagnosis paragonimiasis in the event of unclear pulmonary infiltrates in citizens from South-East Asia should be taken into consideration in the face of pulmonary tuberculosis, and should be cleared up in an etiological diagnosis, if necessary.

Due to the extended political, cultural and economic relations with tropical countries a good knowledge of tropical diseases is required. Since the direct parasitological diagnosis is superior to the serological one it seems logical to improve the culture conditions for laboratory diagnosis and for immunological and chemotherapeutical tests. Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas) and Leishmania donovani (kala-azar) were tested in vitro. Enlargement of the culture surface at the same volume of the medium at 22 degrees C yielded an increase in the number of protozoa by 100%. When blood of different animal species was added to the medium, rabbit blood and that of other rodents such as rat and mouse showed the highest rate of growth. By using the newly developed semi-defined medium 4 as overlay and as monophasic medium high rates of growth were obtained similar to those obtained with known complex media. Therefore, no further import of relevant substances is necessary.

Secondary generalized hyperfibrinolysis was induced by thrombin infusion or batroxobin injection in rats. To follow intravascular fibrinolysis quantitatively, an electroimmuno-assay was used for determination of the fibrin degradation products formed. Anticoagulants (heparin, hirudin), antifibrinolytics (EACA, PAMBA, AMCA), and synthetic (APPA) and naturally occurring (aprotinin) protease inhibitors were studied with regard to their influence on secondary fibrinolysis. The potency and duration of action of the antifibrinolytics tested correspond to their antifibrinolytic activity measured in vitro and to their pharmacokinetics. Formation of degradation products is initiated after the appearance of fibrin monomer or fibrin, respectively. Due to their antithrombin action heparin, hirudin, and APPA prevent the thrombin-induced fibrin formation and thus the induction of secondary fibrinolysis. In contrast, formation of fibrin monomers caused by batroxobin is not influenced by thrombin inhibitors so that in this case formation of degradation products is not prevented.

The thrombolytic action of the streptokinase preparation Awelysin was investigated in animal experiments. After evaluation of the optimum fibrinolytically effective streptokinase dose and the changes in the clotting system induced by intravenous application of streptokinase experimentally produced deposition thrombi and clotting thrombi were lysed intravascularly in dogs, rabbits and rats. The success of the therapy was confirmed angiographically or rheographically.

A method for inducing peripheric white thrombosis in the dog is described. Thrombogenesis was initiated by continuous current 10 mA for 15 minutes. In each case the intravascular electrode was inserted in the femoral artery, the intima lying close to the electrode. Electromagnetic flow measurements and angiography proved the thrombosis.
