LAY ABSTRACT: Research with adults and typically developing children has shown that being able to actively control their learning experience, that is, to decide what to learn, when, and at what pace, can boost learning in a variety of contexts. In particular, previous research has shown a robust advantage of active control for episodic memory as compared with conditions lacking this control. In this article, we explore the potential of active control to improve learning of 6- to 12-year-old children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. We presented them with a simple memory game on a touchscreen tablet, in which children were asked to recall as many of the presented objects as possible. For half of the objects, children could decide the order and pacing of study (active condition); for the other half, they passively observed the study decisions of a previous participant (yoked condition). We found that recognition memory was more accurate when children could actively control the order, pace, and frequency of the study experience, even after a week-long delay. We discuss how teachers and educators might promote active learning approaches in educational and pedagogical applications to support inclusive learning.

Inspiration for the design of new synthetic polymers can be found in the natural world, where materials often exhibit complex properties that change depending on external stimuli. A new synthetic electroplastic elastomer hydrogel (EPEH) that undergoes changes in mechanical properties in response to both chemical and electrochemical stimuli has been prepared based on these precedents. In addition to having the capability to switch between hard and soft states, the presence of both permanent covalent and dynamic copper-based cross links also allows this stimuli-responsive material to exhibit a striking shape memory capability. The density of temporary cross links and the mechanical properties are controlled by reversible switching between the +1 and +2 oxidation states.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of nurse-initiated administration of oral corticosteroids before physician assessment in moderate to severe acute asthma exacerbations in the pediatric ED. METHODS: A time-series controlled trial evaluated nurse initiation of treatment with steroids before physician assessment in children with Pediatric Respiratory Assessment Measure score ≥4. One-to-one periods (physician-initiated and nurse-initiated) were analyzed from September 2009 through May 2010. In both phases, triage nurses initiated bronchodilator therapy before physician assessment, per Pediatric Respiratory Assessment Measure score. We reviewed charts of 644 consecutive children aged 2 to 17 years for the following outcomes: admission rate; times to clinical improvement, steroid receipt, mild status, and discharge; and rate of return ED visit and subsequent admission. RESULTS: Nurse-initiated phase children improved earlier compared to physician-initiated phase (median difference: 24 minutes; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1-50; P = .04). Admission was less likely if children received steroids at triage (odds ratio = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.36-0.87). Efficiency gains were made in time to steroid receipt (median difference: 44 minutes; 95% CI: 39-50; P < .001), time to mild status (median difference: 51 minutes; 95% CI: 17-84; P = .04), and time to discharge (median difference: 44 minutes; 95% CI: 17-68; P = .02). No differences were found in return visit rate or subsequent admission. CONCLUSIONS: Triage nurse initiation of oral corticosteroid before physician assessment was associated with reduced times to clinical improvement and discharge, and reduced admission rates in children presenting with moderate to severe acute asthma exacerbations.

The dawn of the 21st century has brought with it an increasing interest in emulating the adaptive finesse of natural systems by designing materials with on-demand, tunable properties. The creation of such responsive systems could be expected, based on historical precedent, to lead to completely new engineering design paradigms. Using a bioinspired approach of coupling multiple equilibria that operate on different length scales, a material whose bulk mechanical properties can be manipulated by electrical input has been developed. The new macroscale electroplastic elastomer hydrogels can be reversibly cycled through soft and hard states while maintaining a three-dimensional shape by sequential application of oxidative and reductive potentials. This input changes the cross-linking capacity of iron ions within the gel matrix, between a poorly coordinating +2 and a more strongly binding +3 oxidation state. Inclusion of carbon nanotubes in the hydrogel preparation increases conductivity and decreases transition time.
