Recently, physicians have had to come to grips with the issue of indoor radon. Patients and friends are asking whether there are risks to elevated levels in homes and commercial dwellings. This article summarizes current information and helps physicians respond to inquiries from patients.

The use of video display terminals (VDTs) has increased dramatically in the past 10 years and is projected to increase. Particular concerns related to the use of VDTs include vision, radiation, reproduction, dermatitis, stress and ergonomics. This article summarizes the current literature related to possible effects of VDT use and health.

The importance of the medical history is well-known to practitioners. In contrast, most practitioners are ill-prepared to associate occupational exposures to physical and chemical agents with illness. Most medical schools have minimal education concerning the occupational and environmental factors related to diseases. This report will guide the practitioner in the link between occupation and illness and will define appropriate resource materials.

1. The clinical efficacy of mianserin, a tetracyclic compound, was compared with imipramine and placebo in 47 hospitalized depressed patients. 2. The clinical ratings showed that the three treatment groups improved equivalently during hospitalization. 3. Plasma levels of mianserin correlated with changes in the Hamilton Rating Scale for depression, total score and two of its factors (anxiety/somatization, and retardation) and the item 'late insomnia'. 4. Drowsiness was a more frequent side-effect among mianserin patients on day 4; no other side-effect distinguished the treatments. 5. No relationship between MHPG levels and treatment or treatment outcome were observed.
